| 21 new records smashed in inter-club championship Posted: 01 Dec 2013 03:03 PM PST by Ting Tieng Hee, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 2, 2013, Monday KUCHING: Twenty-one new records were created as the annual Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Wong Soon Kai Inter-Club Swimming Championship ended at the Aquatics Centre, Youth and Sports Complex yesterday. Among the old records smashed were two that went back as early as 1994 and another two that were set in 1996. Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (Kasa) 2010's Adrian Chua Wei Kiat was the toast of his team for breaking two new records as he splashed to nine gold medals in the two-day championship. The primary five student of SJK Chung Hua No. 5, competing in the Boy's 9-10 age-group, shattered the 100m freestyle record of 1:02.87 set by Timothy Poh 19 years ago by clocking a new time of 59.69s. Adrian's other record was in the 50m freestyle where he registered a new time of 27.47s to erase the old record of 28.44s set by Tang Chong Heng of Miri in 2008. His seven other golds came in the 100m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 4x50m freestyle relay. For his excellent display and dominance in the championship, Adrian was named the Best Boy Swimmer in Group 4 (9-10 years). Another outstanding swimmer in the boy's competition was Nee Gui Ping who broke three new records and captured eight gold medals to be named Best Boy Swimmer in Group 3 (11-12 years). The rising star of Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) erased Darren Luke's 19-year-old record of 58.24s for the 100m freestyle by clocking 57.73s and he registered 27.02s to break the old record of 28.47s in the 50m butterfly set by Roydon Ong in 2009. Gui Ping, 12, also bettered his own record of 1:03.44 in the 100m butterfly by clocking a new time of 1:00.66. Meanwhile, Cheng Ka Man from Sabah's Blue Marlin Swimming Club was another star for the meet after by breaking two records. Her new times of 35.53s and 29.47s were set in 50m backstroke (old record: 35.90s) and 50m freestyle (30.00s) respectively in the Girl's 9-10 category. Cheng took her personal medal haul to six golds and a silver in her debut appearance at this meet. This superb achievement earned her the Best Girl Swimmer award in Group 4. | Kampung Baru to get Johan Cruyff complex Posted: 01 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR: Kampung Baru, the Malay enclave smack right in Kuala Lumpur's "Golden Triangle", will get a touch of Johan Cruyff with a sport and recreational complex named after the Dutch soccer legend. Better known as the Cruyff Court, it is the third such facility in the country undertaken by Khazanah Nasional Berhad as its signature Corporate Responsibility initiative in collaboration with the Johan Cruyff Foundation. The first Cruyff Court in Malaysia is located in Kampung Majidee in Johor Bahru while the second is at Brickfields here. Naharudin Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Kampong Bharu Development Corporation, the agency spearheading the massive redevelopment of the area, said its choice for the site of the latest Cruyff Court was a most welcome news for the 18,000 residents who have longed for such a facility. "On their behalf, let me say thank you very much to Khazanah Nasional. This Cruyff Court will be a catalyst for the regeneration of Kampung Baru being undertaken by the corporation," he told this writer. The world–renowned Cruyff Court programme consists of public playing fields in urban neighbourhoods which provide children and youth, especially from low income and vulnerable backgrounds, with a place to not only to have fun but also the opportunity to excel both in sports as well as in life. Malaysia is only the second Asian country after Japan to have Cruyff Courts in Asia. In total, there are 177 such courts around the world. The Johan Cruyff Foundation was established in 1997 with the aim of improving the life of children all over the world through sports, paying special attention to children with special needs and less fortunate youngsters. Johan Cruyff is one of the first influential sportsmen in the Netherlands to connect his name to a foundation. Naharudin said for Kampung Baru, there would be value-added features where the courts would not only cater for the active younger generation, but also as a place to spot and produce sporting talents. "Basically, this complex is a special place where various groups can carry out social activities. Some 60 per cent of the Kampung Baru residents are in the very active category within the 30-40 years age group. Those in the older age category can also make use of the facility for jogging, walking and recreation," he said. Also to be made available are facilities such as meeting rooms and social gathering and family activities except for kenduri (feasts). "We are taking the initiative to develop the complex as part of making Kampung Baru as a city within a city with the active participation of residents. At the same time, residents around Kampung Baru like Keramat, Jalan Semarak, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and others can also make use of the facility on a scheduled basis. "This recreation centre will add to Kampung Baru's reputation as a food haven where you can have good and authentic gourmet round-the-clock and as a place that never sleeps. For those who are looking for a village in the city, this is also the place for them and it's also is a tourist attraction," said Naharudin. He said there were already 11 traditional Malay houses preserved as heritage properties in the area while its entire ambience and cleanliness were also undergoing a major facelift. | Aussie press revel in Kangaroos triumph Posted: 01 Dec 2013 02:59 PM PST SYDNEY: The Kangaroos put on a "masterclass" to crush New Zealand in the final of the Rugby League World Cup, avenging defeat at the hands of their fierce rivals five years ago, Australia's press said on Sunday. Australia scored five tries to nil in Saturday's 34-2 thrashing in Manchester in a victory welcomed by the media as building on recent successes including wins for the Wallabies on their European tour, triumph in golf's World Cup and success in the first Ashes Test. "The Kangaroos produced one of their truly memorable performances to smash the Kiwis," the Sunday Telegraph said. "Played in front of a rugby league international record crowd of 74,468 at the famous home of Manchester United, Australia put on a history-making performance with a stunning five-tries-to-nil annihilation." Standoff Johnathan Thurston won his fourth man of the match of the tournament and told the newspaper: "It's a dream come true. It's been a long six weeks but to win a World Cup with your best mates, it doesn't get any better. "We've been building towards this (performance)." The newspaper said the win finally put to bed the Kangaroos' 2008 World Cup final defeat to the Kiwis in Brisbane and their 2010 Four Nations loss to New Zealand. Australian Associated Press said the Kangaroos delivered a rugby league "masterclass" to claim a 10th World Cup title. "In capturing a first World Cup title in 13 years, Australia's triumph ensured a host of rugby league greats crowned their careers with an achievement that had so far eluded them," AAP said. The Sun-Herald said Australian fullback Billy Slater made a spectacular return from injury to banish memories of a handling gaffe that led to a try in the 2008 World Cup final. "Slater scored two tries in a stunning performance after making a remarkable recovery from a knee injury that had been expected to end his tournament two weeks ago," it said. AAP said that a ruthless Australia side kept Sonny Bill Williams out of the record books. "Having helped the All Blacks lift the Rugby World Cup in Auckland in 2011, the newly crowned RLIF International Player of the Year was aiming to become the first man to become a world champion in both codes, but there was little more he could have done to help his side repeat their 2008 success," the national agency said. Retiring Formula One driver Mark Webber celebrated with the Kangaroos in their dressing room and tweeted: "Special afternoon in Manchester watching RL World Cup final. Aussies bloody strong on the day." — AFP To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. This includes vulgar user names. |
| Bayern machine rolls on as busy month looms Posted: 01 Dec 2013 02:59 PM PST BERLIN: Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola admitted the European champions were just happy to see off Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 and extend their record Bundesliga run ahead of a busy December. Bayern's victory at Munich's Allianz Arena was down to Dutch winger Arjen Robben's first-half brace as the Bavarians ran out of steam in the second-half. The three points extended Bayern's record unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to 39 matches and came just four days after they set the record of 10 consecutive Champions League victories by beating CSKA Moscow in Russia. "It's one game more and we won," said Guardiola. "We dominated possession and, in the first half, we were very strong mentally after (last Saturday's 3-0 win at) Dortmund and the trip to Moscow. "In the second half we didn't manage to bring (striker) Mario Mandzukic into the game, but at the end, I am happy with the performance." But Bayern were lacklustre in the second-half against bottom side Braunschweig, who have never won in Munich. "We are human beings and not machines," said goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, while midfielder Toni Kroos added: "sometimes it's okay if you just win the game." Having played in sub-zero temperatures in Moscow on Wednesday, match-winner Robben was just glad to play on a normal pitch after wet snow had made conditions tough on CSKA's heavy pitch. "That was a hard game in Moscow, including the travel," said the 29-year-old. "When you come back here and play on a good pitch, it's simply fun." Bayern host Bavarian neighbours Augsburg in the third round of the German Cup on Wednesday, then travel to Werder Bremen in the league on Saturday before hosting Manchester City in the Champions League on December 10. After hosting Hamburg, Bayern then travel to Morocco for the Club World Cup in a bid to win their second piece of silverware under Guardiola, having won the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea in August. Borussia Dortmund picked up their first victory in three league games with a hard-fought 3-1 win at ten-man Mainz 05 to stay third behind second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern. Borussia, who must win in Marseille in a fortnight to reach the last 16 of the Champions League, can reclaim second place in the Bundesliga if they beat Leverkusen in Dortmund next Saturday. Dortmund took the lead on 70 minutes in Mainz when Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired home a superb free-kick, only for Cameroon's Eric Choupo-Moting to equalise with a penalty four minutes later. Mainz were reduced to 10 men when Colombia's Elkin Soto was sent off for using his hand to stop the ball going into the net and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski fired home the first of two penalties. "You have to evaluate the win in the context of our situation," said Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp, who lost his entire back four ten days ago through injury. "We showed a very, very good fighting spirit. "The fact that in certain situations our opponents had their chances to win the game says everything about Mainz's class." — AFP To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. | Ronaldo still the best for hat-trick hero Bale Posted: 01 Dec 2013 02:58 PM PST MADRID: Gareth Bale insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo remains the world's best player in his eyes as the Welshman ably filled the Portuguese's shoes with his first Real Madrid hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Valladolid on Saturday. Ronaldo was forced to sit out a second consecutive game with a slight muscle strain, but his absence proved no problem for Madrid as Bale took his tally to eight goals in his last seven games. Victory moved Real to within three points of La Liga leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Bale opened the scoring with a simple header before also providing his sixth assist in his last seven outings for Karim Benzema to make it 2-0 before the break. The former Tottenham Hotspur man added his second of the evening with a neat right-footed finish from Marcelo's cross before completing the perfect hat-trick by turning home another centre from the Brazilian full-back with his left foot. However, the 24-year-old insisted he is no way ready to replace Ronaldo as Los Blancos' talisman. "It was a massive blow not having Cristiano playing," he said. "For me, he is the world's best player and we had to do a job (without him) and thankfully we did that. "He has proven that not just with Real Madrid but with Portugal too and under pressure situations. He is a level above everyone else." Despite the absence of the favourite to win this year's Ballon d'Or, Bale claimed to have not felt any extra burden on his shoulders to keep Real on the heels of Barca and Atletico. However, he did admit to being desperate to seal his hat-trick after netting his second with still 24 minutes remaining. "I didn't feel any pressure to be honest, I just want to go out there and enjoy my football and play as well as I can. I try to do that and thankfully I got a hat-trick. "I think as soon as I scored the second I was trying to get the third, I was trying my hardest to get into positions and thankfully the move did work out and it was a great ball by Marcelo to put it on a plate for me." — AFP To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks.
