KUCHING: The government is offering residents of Kpg Taba Sait, Rejoi, Pain Bojong and Semban at Bengoh Resettlement Scheme free courses relating to agricultural downstream food production to uplift their economic status.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Office (Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development) Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, who announced the offer yesterday, said these courses would benefit those who own agricultural land.

He urged village chiefs to liaise with Bengoh assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil on the type of courses that suited his people.

"The government has various types of courses to help the people in enhancing theirentrepreneurship skills. The courses will be free of charge, and all you need to do is to talk to your elected representative (Dr Jerip) on the kind of courses you want," Naroden said at an event to hand over RM8.1 million in compensation and land titles to peple from the four villages, which are affected by the RM315 million Bengoh dam project.

Naroden told those present at BRS Kampung Taba Sa'it community hall, about 50Km from here, that there were vast opportunities in the downstream food industries.

"The majority of the people in rural areas own land and whether it is big or small, serious efforts must be put in to develop them for agricultural purposes, and we must be able to accept changes." Naroden, who is also Assistant Minister of Resource Planning, stressed that the government never had the intention to grab peoples' land, as often alleged by the opposition.

He explained that whatever land acquired by the government for development purposes would be paid based on the current market price.

"It has never been the intention of the government to take away people's land. So, do not listen to the claims by certain people that the government is stealing the people's land."

Wahap makes DBKU proud

by Saiful Bahari, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 21, 2013, Saturday

KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) bagged two awards at the Safety and Occupational Health National Excellence Award 2013 held in Putrajaya on Dec 16.

It won the Excellent Public Service and Local Council award and the Best Chief Executive Officer (CEO) award, which was awarded to DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Julai.

DBKU has so far amassed 88 national and international awards since its formation 25 years ago.

The awards were shown to the media during DBKU Innovation Day yesterday.

Wahap told reporters that the awards should be celebrated by all DBKU staff and residents under its jurisdiction as everyone played their part as well.

"We want every citizen to feel proud of these awards, and be part of us. What is more important is for staff of DBKU to continue serving for the better."

Wahap said 2014 would be an exciting year for DBKU as the council is looking at 'Pioneering Role of DBKU as Driver, Facilitator and Advocator' under the DBKU strategic development plan 2014.

"There are several plans we are looking at, such as turning Main Bazaar and Gambier Street into a liveable pedestrian and tourist-friendly area and the installation of Close Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) at 24 strategic and hot spots around DBKU areas."

Wahap said the proposal was to turn Main Bazaar and Gambier Street into a pedestrian and tourist-friendly area with lots of activities, such as playing host to flea or car booth sale, motor show, and musical performances.

"This is why we are looking at upgrading the image of all the available shops, where we will pay half of the costs to repaint and renovate the looks of the outer part of the shops."

He said the five-foot-way of the affected shops would be levelled, and this was estimated to cost about RM300,000.

On a related matter, Wahap said 24 CCTV's would be installed next month at several strategic and hot spots.

DBKU is also looking at turning two `black areas', namely Gita and Samariang Baru, into `white areas' under its safe city effort.

"Community engagement with DBKU is actually a vital part in realising all efforts and programmes of the council."

No assessment rate hike next year, says Miri mayor

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 11:24 AM PST

MIRI: There will be no increase of assessment rates here next year, announced Miri mayor Lawrence Lai yesterday.

As for desludging, which will be implemented beginning January 1 next year, he said Miri City Council (MCC) would bear all the cost involved.

"This desludging service is under the Local Authorities (Compulsory Desludging of Septic Tanks) By-law.

"This service should be carried out within a certain period," he said when chairing a full council meeting here yesterday.

Lai said residential houses should have septic tanks desludged once every four years, while the desludging for commercial building should be once every two years.

This by-law, he added, had been implemented in Kuching and Sibu.

He said Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd is the authorised operator appointed by Sewerage Services Department Sarawak to carry out desludging of septic tank service in the city.

The operator, he said, had five desludging trucks to carry out this task.

"MCC is the coordinating body to oversee the desludging service being carried out to buildings within the jurisdiction of the council.

"We do not own any desludging trucks."

In order to ensure that the service is carried out in a systematic manner, the council would issue a service order to Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd to carry out desludging of septic tank on a particular building.

There are two categories of desludging service, (1) the scheduled desludging service, where schedule will be drawn up by the council, and (2) ad hoc desludging service, when building owners reported to council that their septic tanks have overflowed and need urgent desludging.

The scheduled desludging service will be carried out in stages and house owners will be notified in writing at least one week before the actual work to be carried out.

All desludging service will be carried out in the presence of the house owner or their representative.

The operation shall be conducted during day time only.

In implementing the desludging service, there shall be no money transaction or cash payment involved as the contactor will send their bill directly to the council for payment.

In view of that, members of public are reminded not to pay the contactor or their staff for desludging services rendered.

Under the By-Laws, the owner of a premise is responsible to make sure that their septic tanks are accessible for desluging.

If the access is block, covered or conceal, then it is the responsibility of the owners to grant access to the contractor to carry out desludging, failing which they could be fined.
