LABUAN: Doing school revision in a relaxed manner was one of the important factors for SMK Labuan student, Noorsyazwanah Solih @ Sallih who managed to score 9A's in her PMR examination.

She was among five students who scored straight 9A's here in Labuan yesterday. She felt surprised with her unexpected results when they were announced at the school hall.

"I did not set my target too high, as I only thought that I could achieve five or six A's," she said after getting her result slip.

Noorsyazwanah, whose ambition is to become an accountant, shared that prayers were vital besides working hard and paying full attention in class.

Nonetheless, her parents' support and prayers were also among the factors behind her sweet success, she said. Another student, Mohammad Fadhilah Asli from SM Sains Labuan, concurred with Noorsyazwanah that parents' encouragement apart from effort was so important for one's success. He scored 8A's in his PMR.

"A student must clear with his or her purpose to go to school and must be serious in their studies.

"I try to balance my time between sports and studies," said Mohammad, who also represented his school in rugby and football.

Aspiring to study chemical engineering someday, he shared that students must always seek God's help in their undertakings.

"We only have two choices in front of us. One is success and the other one is living in misery," he said when asked about his advice for other students who are going to sit for PMR orother examinations.

A total of 70 students around Labuan scored 9A's, 8A's and 7A's in this years' PMR examination.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) results this year showed an improvement in its state average point (GPN) from 3.01 last year to 2.95 this year, which is accorded as the best compared to the state's overall performance in the last five years.

She also reiterated that the Penilaian Menengah Rendah examination system will be replaced with the Penaksiran Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PPMR), where four subjects, namely, Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics and Science will be evaluated centrally, while other subjects such as History and Geography will be on school-based evaluation.

Meanwhile, Maimunah pointed out that despite various efforts by the state education department to improve the state's performance in the English language subject, it remains to be the most difficult subject to improve.

"However, we will see to it that more programmes and efforts will be implemented to continue and try to improve the English language subject performance in the state," she said.

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:25 AM PST

SANDAKAN: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) is to hold a simulation exercise at a tourist destination to test the elements of collaboration, understanding and coordination of the security forces.

Its director-general, Datuk Mohammad Mentek, said the exercise would be carried out shortly, coordinated by Esscom's Security and Public Order Division.

The exercise would test the capability of the security forces in thwarting incidents of abduction like the recent one on Pom Pom Island off Semporna, he said.

"The simulation exercise will be carried out at a tourist resort located on an island in waters off the east coast of the state," he said when opening a workshop on drawing up a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the Sabah east coast.

He said all security forces would participate in the exercise.

Mohammad said Esscom was in the process of stepping up its preparedness as well as night patrols in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). The patrols involved planes and helicopters, he added. — Bernama

IGP’s statement had been misinterpreted — Sabah CP

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:24 AM PST

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Commissioner of Police (CP), Datuk Hamza Taib has urged all parties particularly the media not to speculate on Inspector- General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar's statement regarding claims of imminent attacks on Sabah by militant groups.

He said Khalid's statement had been misintepreted and erroneously reported.

"Reporters had asked him for updates and the IGP's reply was that the police were constantly receiving information from various sources and that they were prepared for any possibility.

"He did not mention that Sabah was about to be attacked," he told a press conference after attending the monthly police gathering at the Sabah police contingent headquarters organised by the Special branch here yesterday.

Hamza when asked on propaganda that militant groups including Abu Sayyaf and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) were planning an incursion on Pulau Selingan (Sandakan), Pulau Langkayan (Beluran) and Resort Sukau (Kinabatangan) on Tuesday and Christmas Day, said the police received such information all the time but would not treat it lightly.

"Every information will be scrutinised though a special method to determine its authenticity," he said.

Meanwhile, he said the ongoing 'Op Gasak' conducted by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) and 'Op Cantas' by the police have impacted positively in weeding out undesirable elements particularly at the water villages. — Bernama

Esscom to draw up SOP to improve security at tourist resorts in eastern Sabah, says DG

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:12 AM PST

SANDAKAN: A standard operating procedure (SOP) for better tourism industry security maintenance in Sabah's east coast will be drawn up as a guideline for the industry operators.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek said the drawing up of the SOP was among efforts undertaken to improve security in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone).

He said the SOP would also help create effective communication between the tourism industry operators and the security forces.

"This SOP will give a clear guideline on the role of all parties concerned in ensuring cooperation and commitment in security maintenance," he told reporters after opening a workshop on preparing the SOP, here, yesterday.

The two-day workshop has 60 participants comprising tourist resort operators and representatives of the Malaysian security forces and local authorities.

Mohammad said in drawing up the SOP, feedback from various parties, especially the tourism industry players, would be taken into consideration.

"When the SOP is ready, it will be submitted to the Esscom Main Committee chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman before being tabled to the state cabinet for approval." Mohammad said Esscom targeted the SOP to be implemented next year.

He said the guideline contained in the SOP would also be proposed for use by the resort operators as a condition for approving their operating licence in future.

Mohammad said the SOP was necessary as there was lack of attention given to security aspects by the resort operators in the Esszone.

This was indicated by the shooting-cum-kidnapping incident in Pulau Pom-Pom, Semporna, recently and also observed during visits by Esscom to the resorts, he added. — Bernama
