Move to seek recognition for Brunei standards Posted: 16 Dec 2013 11:18 PM PST BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei Darussalam is working on plans to make its, National Standards Centre a fully recognised accreditation body that will ensure the credibility of certification bodies and testing laboratories in the country, Borneo Bulletin reported. The move was revealed by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, in a speech at the launching ceremony of the World Standards Day (WSD) 2013 held at the Atrium Hall, The Airport Mall. He said that the WSD celebration will highlight the importance of standards to the public and emphasise the role of the standard or norm in increasing productivity and supporting economic growth. He said that the National Standards Centre has been mandated to uphold the responsibilities of developing standards and strengthen the standards and conformance infrastructure of Brunei Darussalam. "The centre will also be the Secretariat of the National Standards Council whose role is to provide directions and formulate policy implementation towards encouraging local entrepreneurs to try to get internationally recognised standards to facilitate export activities in Brunei Darussalam." Meanwhile, the Chief Scientific Officer of the Asean Food and Beverage Alliance, Kim Leighton presented a keynote address, entitled 'Reducing technical barriers and supporting engagement with the food and beverage industry'. He noted that divergences in national product standards often act as impediments to trade. "Doing business in the Asean Economic Community (AEC) requires harmonisation of product standards and technical regulations as well as mutual recognition of test reports and certifications". Leighton said that Asean's approach to preparing, revising and applying standards and technical regulations had been based on international standards and practices. Leighton said that while the adoption of the international standards has enabled intra-Asean trade to grow in the priority sectors of integration, there are still many challenges due to differing national laws and regulations to regional commitments, country-specific requirements and the lack of development in mutual recognition arrangements in areas where they are needed, including in the prepared food sector. According to a representative of DES, digging works by contractors not far from the commercial area accidentally damaged the cable which caused the blackout in several areas. The DES reminded contractors to obtain digging permits from the Public Works Department prior to conducting such activities to ensure the worksite is free from underground cables or pipelines. Failure to obtain the digging permit and causing damage to government property will lead to heavy fines. << Previous Entry - Next Entry >> To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks.
