Move to ensure 1Azam participants get right training

KUCHING: All district offices have been instructed to conduct a business-matching exercise for all 1Azam project applicants to ensure the training given to them is spot on.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said the instruction was from the federal government for the benefit of the applicants.

"What is most important is that the 1Azam assistance will not only be suitable to the participants in terms of their interests and skills, but it must also be suited to the participants' age," she said when officiating at the Kuching District 1Azam project business-matching activity held at the old State Legislative Assembly complex here yesterday.

She told the 1,500-strong aspiring participants present that selection for 1Azam project 2014 was based on the e-Kasih database, and the programmes on offer were Azam Tani, Azam Khidmat, Azam Niaga and Azam Kerja.

Fatimah said her ministry, which is the programme facilitator, received more than 10,000 names early this year from across the state.

However, it was later found out that 30 per cent of the applicants did not specify accurately the type of programmes they were interested in, and this delayed the whole process involved.

"The names had to be referred back to the district offices for verification. Maybe during that time the selection of the Azam activities were done based on interviews with the census officers without consultation with the implementing agencies first."

Fatimah hoped with the business matching initiative, the list of proposed participants for 1Azam assistance next year would be 'cleaner'.

For heads of households whose names are in the e-Kasih database, but are too old to be involved in the 1Azam programme, she said her ministry could arrange for members of the household to be trained under the programme.

She added that her ministry was currently updating the e-Kasih database to ensure that only those who meet the criteria are in the database.

"The district offices together with two census officers will verify whether those who are in the database are really poor or not, and if they are found to be not eligible, their names will be deleted."

Also present at the event yesterday were Kuching Resident Abang Shamshudin Abang Seruji and the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development's permanent secretary Rodziah Morshidi.

SRB flexes enforcement muscle

Personnel now stationed at all terminals registered with board to keep wayward boat operators at bay

KUCHING: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) now has a tighter grasp on happenings at boat terminals in the state following the recruitment of 40 additional enforcement officers this year.

In fact, the board has stationed enforcement officers at all terminals registered with them to ensure that all boat operators toe the line, and not try to make a fast buck by overloading their vessels.

In addition, SRB chairman Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said new stations had been opened at Bakun and Nanga Peraran, while the Belaga and Daro stations had been reopened.

"We have recruited 40 additional officers this year, and we will submit requests to the Chief Minister's Department to
increase the number of enforcement officers from time to time (as necessary)," he told reporters after presenting awards to the winners of a landscape beautification competition organised by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) yesterday.

In the wake of the Kawan Mas express boat tragedy that claimed three lives in May this year, SRB was heavily criticised when it admitted it did not have enough personnel to monitor all the passenger jetties and express boats movements in the state.

A total of 219 people were rescued in that boat tragedy.

Investigations revealed that Kawan Mas was heavily overloaded and had picked up passengers from Bakun and proceeded to Belaga where it unloaded some passengers before capsizing at Tanjung Kukuk, Batu Bungan, about an hour downriver from Belaga bazaar.

Meanwhile, Sagah, who is also Tarat assemblyman, urged boat passengers and boat operators to exercise more caution when using river transport at this time of year.

"(We ask for more) awareness and cooperation from the public, especially those using river boats to return to their villages to celebrate Christmas, and children returning to school.

"As it is also the monsoon season, the rivers may be faster flowing, and more boat passengers are also expected so they should be more aware not to overload the boats.

"If there are many passengers, operators can request for a temporary permit and we at the board will process and give approval as soon as possible."

He added that SRB had yet to receive any application for temporary permits, probably because boat operators might be waiting to see if the number of passengers over this festive season was high enough to warrant applying for it.

Council gets pat on the back for environmental initiative

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:50 AM PST

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been commended for playing a "very big role" in shaping public opinions and challenging perceptions about the natural environment.

Tarat assemblyman Datuk Roland Sagah said this during the prize giving ceremony for this year's Landscape Beautification Competition yesterday.

He praised the council and its staff for their efforts to cultivate greater public awareness about the importance of landscape beautification by organising the annual landscaping competition, which is now in its 21st edition.

"Twenty one years is not long, but when it comes to service it is long indeed. There have been a lot of changes. If this was a durian tree, by now it would be bearing much fruit."

However, Sagah, who is also deputy speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, emphasised that the benefits gained
from participating in the competition should not be measured purely by its material and cash prizes.

"When compared with other projects, it is very little. In addition to providing us with oxygen to breathe to live, I believe that a beautiful landscape can help us to feel more positive. It can make us happy creatures in this world. If you have a happy life, you will have a long life."

In addition to this, he pointed out that places with beautiful landscaped environments attracted visitors and could be turned into tourist attractions.

He urged community leaders and village representatives present to consider improving landscaping and facilities to encourage people to visit local attractions in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, Sagah, who is also Sarawak Rivers Board chairman, shared that he had initiated a river landscaping competition in his constituency, and hoped that more villages and schools in Tarat would adopt a river and consider taking part.

He also encouraged those from other constituencies to approach their representatives if they wanted something similar to be carried out there.

Also present was MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang and competition organising chairman Edward Kurik, who is also MPP committee chairman for landscaping and beautification.

SK St Bernard yearns to become a resort-style school

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:49 AM PST

KUCHING: Students of SK St Bernard in Kampung Sadir may soon become the envy of their peers if the school's administration and supporters realise their goal of having a resort-style school.

"Our vision is to have a school ala resort. Many tourists who visit Borneo Highlands Resort stop by just to see our school," headmaster Edward Peter Bajat told The Borneo Post when met after the prize-giving ceremony for the annual landscape beautification competition organised by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) yesterday.

The school, which is located about 70km from here, was crowned champion in the Mission School category and was also presented with the Jury's Special Award for managing to place in the top three for three consecutive years.

For winning their category in this year's competition, the school received RM1,500 cash, a trophy, certificate and a landscape project worth RM5,000, while for the latter award, the school received RM500 cash, a trophy and certificate.

Edward, who has been headmaster of St Bernard's for the past three years, said in their first year of competition, they placed third, but improved it the following year to first place.

"We also won the Jury's Award then. This year is our second time winning the award.

"Our secret is the cooperation between the schools and parents. Their cooperation is important, not just to beautify the school but also for its security and to create a comfortable environment for our students," he said, adding that it was also possible because of the efforts of the committee in charge who planned and maintained the landscaping.

He said they tried their best to use as many natural features of their surroundings in their design, which also incorporated cultural elements.

"We didn't spend comparatively as much on beautifying the school as MPP and other volunteers helped by donating plants. We also incorporated native flora found in and around the school and village. We also have a lot of help from parents and villagers in implementing our plans."

He shared that the parents and villagers were very pleased about winning the best landscaping award for Mission School for the second consecutive year, and that they would likely plan something to celebrate the victory.

In yesterday's ceremony, 30 winners across 10 categories were recognised by MPP for their efforts to beautify their surroundings. The categories were Best National School, Best Mission School, Best Chinese School (SJK), Best Secondary School, Best Malay Kampung, Best Dayak Kampung, Best Masjid, Best Church, Best Chapel, and Best Temple (Tokong).

Minister happy with response towards 1Azam initiative

KUCHING: The Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development has exceeded its target for the 1Azam project this year, in terms of participants.

Its target was 7,500 new participants, but it managed to register 7,539 participants instead.

Its minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said the participants were household heads, who had registered themselves with e-Kasih.

"As of December 4 this year, we have achieved 100.5 per cent of the target set under the national key performance indicator (NKPI).

"We are confident that the number would continue to rise before the end of this year," she said when officiating at the Kuching District 1Azam project business matching activity here yesterday.

Fatimah said although the target for next year would be 7,500 new participants, her ministry would try its best to get as many participants as possible so that more people could benefit from the programme and escape the clutches of poverty.

"We are confident of exceeding the target again next year, provided we have enough allocation for the 1Azam project."

She hoped that from the 7,500 participants of the 1Azam programme, more participants would be able to increase their income of RM300 for six consecutive months.

"We do not want the increase of income to be only for a month and goes down for the remaining months. If the income of the participants can be maintained for six consecutive months, then the income can be considered stable."

Fatimah said her ministry and implementing agencies would continue to fine tune the 1Azam programme to ensure that the participants were able to market their products.

She said it was very important for the participants and implementing agencies to work together to market their products as this would help them to expand their market and increase their income.

Fatimah also advised the 1Azam participants to work together with government agencies to market their products during Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Meanwhile, Kuching Resident Abang Shamshudin Abang Seruji, in his welcoming speech, said Kuching had the highest number people registered under e-Kasih.

"For 2012, our target was to have 1,441 1Azam participants in Kuching, which is among the highest in Sarawak."

As of now, the state has over 90,000 people registered under e-Kasih.
