KUCHING: Three reports were lodged by various organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) at Simpang Tiga Police Station One Stop Centre yesterday.

The group was headed by members of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam dan Warisan Sarawak (Pejasa), Sarawak National Youth Association (Saberkas) and several former policemen and army personnel.

According to a spokesperson Hadzman Johny, they wanted the police to take stern action on three individuals who are openly inviting members of the public through the social media to participate in illegal gatherings.

"We take it as a serious matter as all three individuals were inciting hatred towards the ruling government," said Hadzman.

He added that the reports were made against several groups on the social media who invited the public to participate in an illegal gathering to topple the ruling government on Dec 31 at Padang Merdeka.

"Reports were also lodged against an individual who posted on his Facebook urging members of the public to participate in a demonstration to urge Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down in front of his residence at Demak Jaya on Dec 29 and the invitation by the Facebook page 'Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia' to participate in an illegal gathering at Third Mile," he added.

"We are concerned Sarawakians and this is not politics the Sarawakian way," he said.

Also present were over 30 members of the respective organisations.

Kapit Chinese want to pick own temenggong

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 03:51 PM PST

KAPIT: United Chinese Association (UCA) Kapit has appealed to the government to let the Chinese community here select the new temenggong to succeed Lau Kah Kee, who died last Dec 12.

The late Lau was appointed a temenggong in 2003, succeeding Sng Chee Eng after his term expired.

UCA Kapit president Ma Tian Ho told the press after chairing a committee meeting at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce on Thursday that he hoped the government would lend the Chinese community here its ear.

He said the general consensus was that the new temenggong must be someone with a good character, well mannered, has good discipline, a permanent resident of Kapit, and possessed the desire to serve the people well.

"Preferably, we'd like to pick our own candidate, and not someone who is lobbied through political affiliation or backing from any particular political party," he said.

UCA Kapit is the umbrella body of eight Chinese-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The NGOs are Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Tai San Ten Association, Foochow Association, Chiang Chuan Association, Kwang Tung Association, Kapit Chinese Women Association, Tai Chi Association, and Kapit Music Society.

Ma concurred with the stand of Kampung Baru's Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) chairman Zulaini Junaidi on picking locals as community leaders.

Zulaini, who is also PBB Ranting Kampung Baru Youth chief, urged outsiders and political parties not to meddle with the locals in the appointment of community leaders for the Malay community here.

He said the locals preferred to pick their own leaders.

Expand knowledge in management, Dr Abdul Rahman tells caterers

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 03:49 PM PST

KUCHING: Women involved in catering business are urged to expand their knowledge in management and financial skills to break barriers and capitalise on a more challenging platform.

Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said women entrepreneurs equipped with several skills would ensure growth of their business in a challenging world.

"Women entrepreneurs in catering businesses should be able to provide more than just food during an event," said Dr Abdul Rahman during the closing of a catering course organised by Sarawak Women Bureau at Kampung Sungai Lumut, Buntal here yesterday.

Events such as a Malay wedding, he said, would need a 'pelamin' for the bride and groom, which can also be prepared by the caterer as well as providing make-up service for the bride.

"Try and organise the whole wedding from the start to the end, this would promise a more beneficial income," he added.

Meanwhile, the two-day catering course was attended by 30 participants from the area.

According to Dr Abdul Rahman, this is an approach by the state government through the women bureau to elevate the standard of living of the people.

After the course, it is expected that at least two to three of the women will be able to venture out and start their own business.

"This is also a way for the government to try and bring down the rate of poverty among the people on a long term basis," he added.

Sarawak Women Bureau director Norjanah Razali who also spoke, said that such courses would supplement and hasten the state's objective towards a high income status.

According to her, women nowadays are quick to adapt and climb the ladder of success regardless of being in business or corporate sectors.

"Upon your completion of this course, all of you (participants) will be able to open your own catering businesses or eateries," said Norjanah adding further that it is now common to see eateries at new commercial areas which signifies a booming and growing industry.

She also said that it would be better if the participants can keep a close relationship with the women's bureau to take advantage of the ample opportunities.

‘Sarawak Nationalists’ to hold year-end gathering

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 03:49 PM PST

KUCHING: The 'Sarawak Nationalists' Facebook group  will hold a year-end gathering tonight (Dec 28) at McDonald's Central Park from 7pm onwards.

They will be on hand to give away free download of what they claimed as 'selected British colonial declassified documents' to any Sarawakians interested to know the truth behind the formation of Malaysia.

They claimed that during the dying days of British rule, many documents from 37 former colonies were destroyed or hidden to protect the British government from litigation.

In 1962, Sarawak was one of the last British colonies, and the declassified documents relate the communication between Britain and Malaya in the run-up to the formation of Malaysia.

Anyone who wishes to have a copy of the selected documents must bring their own laptop or pendrive.  Also available for purchase is 'Sarawak: The Real Deal' which chronicles the historical events in Sarawak leading to formation of Malaysia and 'Pemberontakan Brunei 1962' by Said Mohidin.

For further details, those interested may contact the group admin, Lina Soo at 013-8164219.
