MIRI: Action plans are already been carried out to prepare Sarawak archers to strike gold medals not only in next year's Sukma (Malaysia Games) but also up to Sukma 2016.

"We have taken proactive measures to build a strong archery team especially in view of Sarawak playing host to Sukma XVIII in 2016," state chief coach Abdul Razak Yaacob said to The Borneo Post at the closing ceremony of Archery Medallion Target Camp for Sukma 2014-2016 yesterday.

The camp, hosted for the first time by Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) and assisted by the National Sport Institute, was held at Petronas Sport Village from Dec 9-17.

The 9-days camp was participated by a total of 30 young archers from Miri, Limbang, Sarikei, Bintulu and Kuching. The camp programme included such aspects as physical fitness, sports psychology and nutrition.

The camp also served as a platform to select archers to represent the state for Sukma 2014 which will be held in Perlis.

20 archers have been identified to join the Sukma 2014 shadow squad.

Abdul Razak, who has been in coaching for more than two decades, revealed that the shadow squad will undergo a 6-month intensive training programme based in Miri from Jan 15, 2014.

Meanwhile, MSNS Northern Region deputy director Gloria James Juat said the current camp was also an ice-breaker among the athletes from the different divisions and helped to strengthen ties to build a strong archer team.

"We aim to build strong squad of apprentices in the sport for Sarawak and to produce national athletes for the Olympic Games," she added.

RM294 mln help for Sabah, Sarawak smallholders – BorneoPost ...

by Mariah Doksil. Posted on December 17, 2013, Tuesday

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) has allocated RM294 million for smallholders in Sabah and Sarawak for 2014 to replant and plant new oil palms involving 35,000 hectares of land under the government's National Key Economic Area (NKEA).

Its minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said 5,000 hectares would be in Sabah while another 30,000 hectares would be in Sarawak.

"The government will continue its effort to encourage more smallholders to replant and plant new oil palms. Under this programme, MPIC will provide assistance of RM9, 000 per hectare to cover costs, seedlings, clearing, and also for fertilizers.

"We are also looking at the other challenges in the oil palm industry, such as issues in fertilizers, mills and also the dependence on foreign workers," he said to reporters after launching the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Complex at Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), yesterday.

With the setting up of the complex, Embas said the ministry was hoping it would help the industry move towards good agriculture practice.

Realizing the importance of competitive human capital in order to carry the national transformation programme, Embas said the ministry had also set up Institute of Malaysian Plantation and Commodities (IMPAC) in 2010.

The institute is responsible for implementing courses under the ministry.

During the event, a total of 230 IMPAC graduates from Sabah received their diplomas and certificates after successfully graduating from various programmes under IMPAC.

"MPOB has built Pusat Latihan Industri Sawit (PLASMA) Lahad Datu at a cost of RM5 million, and a hostel costing RM9 million. Another PLASMA has been set up in Keratong Pahang, with a total cost of RM35,030,351.

"Since 2000, MPOB has trained 15,000, while about 105 companies have benefited from the programmes organized by MPOB," he added.

Earlier in his speech, Embas said the industry had contributed RM73.3 billion to Malaysia's export earnings from the 5.08 million hectares of oil palm plantations.

Sabah, he said, had the largest plantation in Malaysia with 1.46 million hectares, where 12.8 per cent of the total plantations were being cultivated by smallholders.

The newly launched MPOB Complex, costing RM4.6 million, would be an information centre for industry players seeking more information or the latest developments in the industry, he said/

Also present at the event yesterday were MPOB chairman Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, Deputy Minister of MPIC Datuk Noriah Kasnon, Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail and director general of MPOB Datuk Choo Yuen May.

Sarawak true testimony of harmony - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 02:29 PM PST

SARIKEI: Sarawak is a true testimony of religious and racial harmony.

In saying this, political secretary to the chief minister Paul Igai added it was a common scenario during any religious celebrations like Christmas, Hari Raya and Chinese New Year that Sarawakians shared the joyous occasions through `open houses'.

"Even in organising tonight's event, several Muslim friends were involved to make it a success," he pointed out at a pre-Christmas event held at the community hall in Pakan on Saturday night.

He was representing Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan.

"It is therefore our hope that harmony continue to be preserved, treasured and passed on by Sarawakians from generation to generation," he added.

District Officer Inting Nyamie who is the event's organising chairman reminded the people to be always thankful for the peace and prosperity enjoyed all this while.

"…We ought to be thankful to God for the blessing," he said.

Among the activities organised in conjunction with the event were a colouring contest for children and karaoke singing competition.

The karaoke competition concluded with Lim Shin Jiin, Brenda Honey and Florence Diana as the top three winners in the children's category while the top three winners in the adult category were Barbara Tina, Christina Chanda and Benedict Nyambong.

Among those present were Sarikei Resident Michael Dawi Alli, Julau district police chief DSP Bidor Noyeng and Pemanca Mambu Ikom.

Philippine Catholics end 40-day mourning for typhoon dead ...

Posted: 17 Dec 2013 02:34 PM PST

TACLOBAN, Philippines: Survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan gathered to pray while a priest sprinkled holy water on their ruined homes yesterday in a ceremony marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for the thousands killed.

The memorial took place in Tacloban on the island of Leyte, which bore the brunt of the Philippines' deadliest typhoon, accounting for more than 5,000 of the 6,069 confirmed deaths.

"The people here have accepted that their loved ones will not be coming back," Father Amadeo Alvero, of the Santo Nino parish in Tacloban, told AFP after celebrating an open-air mass attended by about 100 survivors.

"However, they are having difficulty getting back on their feet because they still do not have proper homes, electricity is still down, and many have also lost their jobs.

"City officials have yet to find a relocation place for them."

The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic country where it is traditional to mourn the dead for 40 days.

Residents of the parish are families of fishermen, fish vendors, and informal settlers.

They have all been told by the city government that they will not be allowed to rebuild because their old homes were too close to the shore and dangerous, the priest added.

Haiyan slashed across the central Philippines on Nov 8, unleashing ferocious winds of up to 315 kilometres an hour on an area the size of Portugal, destroying more than a million homes and leaving four million people homeless.

The authorities said most of the deaths were caused by tsunami-like giant storm surges that swept through Tacloban and other cities and towns of Leyte and Samar islands. — AFP
