SARIKEI: Sarawak is a true testimony of religious and racial harmony.

In saying this, political secretary to the chief minister Paul Igai added it was a common scenario during any religious celebrations like Christmas, Hari Raya and Chinese New Year that Sarawakians shared the joyous occasions through `open houses'.

"Even in organising tonight's event, several Muslim friends were involved to make it a success," he pointed out at a pre-Christmas event held at the community hall in Pakan on Saturday night.

He was representing Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan.

"It is therefore our hope that harmony continue to be preserved, treasured and passed on by Sarawakians from generation to generation," he added.

District Officer Inting Nyamie who is the event's organising chairman reminded the people to be always thankful for the peace and prosperity enjoyed all this while.

"…We ought to be thankful to God for the blessing," he said.

Among the activities organised in conjunction with the event were a colouring contest for children and karaoke singing competition.

The karaoke competition concluded with Lim Shin Jiin, Brenda Honey and Florence Diana as the top three winners in the children's category while the top three winners in the adult category were Barbara Tina, Christina Chanda and Benedict Nyambong.

Among those present were Sarikei Resident Michael Dawi Alli, Julau district police chief DSP Bidor Noyeng and Pemanca Mambu Ikom.

KUCHING: DAP Sarawak has set up its Socialist Youth or 'Dapsy' Sarawak to expand its political strength and enhance penetration into rural areas throughout the state.

Newly-minted chairman of Dapsy Sarawak Wong King Wei, who is also Padungan assemblyman, said the youth movement would play a supplementary role to the main body to push for success in the party's 'Go Rural' and 'Help Sarawak' projects.

"For the coming three years, we will focus on assisting the DAP state committee in implementing the two projects. We also have a plan to upgrade the skills of our youth members.

"Dapsy Sarawak will be the backbone of the party in terms of manpower and other resources to spread its wings to sub-urban and rural areas in Sarawak," he told a news conference at DAP headquarters here yesterday.

Wong, who is also Dapsy Malaysia vice chief, said the state youth movement would carry out its SEA plan, which is an acronym for Solidarity, Equipping and Awareness.

He said 'solidarity' referred to the needs to bring Pakatan Rakyat component parties together to strengthen the coalition while 'equipping' looked at enhancing the quality of young leaders to brace future challenges.

"We are equally concerned about creating 'awareness' on the party and our vision among the communities especially those in the rural areas."

He added Dapsy Sarawak would emerge a powerful wing to the main body to register further achievements.

Dapsy Sarawak held its inaugural direct election in October to name Wong as the chairman, Alan Ling the deputy chairman, Leon Jimat Donald and Alice Lau (vice chairpersons) and Tonny Ung (secretary).

It held the secondary election last Saturday to elect Chew Jing Ling as assistant secretary, Violet Yong (treasurer), Ting Huat King (assistant treasurer), Chiew Sung Ngie (organising secretary), Peter Hii (assistant organising secretary), Sia Kee Tong (publicity secretary), Vivien Lau (assistant publicity secretary) and Sia Ai Kiew (political education director).

Dapsy Sarawak has also set up five bureaus namely Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak headed by Yek Ing Seng, Impian Sarawak (John Ng), Merchandise (Hii Ting Ik), Mahasiswa (Julian Tan) and International Affairs (Oscar Ling).

Stand by your rights, Nancy tells women - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 02:42 PM PST

KUCHING: It is vital for women to understand and be aware of their privileges and rights provided by the law.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri, there is no excuse for any person to infringe or be ignorant of the laws.

"The very basis of having laws in place is to protect one's rights and to provide for the populace to live their lives happily and peacefully," said Nancy who was officiating at a 'Forum on Law Literate' organised by the Sarawak Indian Women Association (Siwa) at a hotel here yesterday.

Nancy, who is also Batang Sadong MP, added that awareness and compliance with laws, rules and regulations will be instrumental to help individuals progress systematically and harmoniously in a society.

Regarding the forum, she was happy to note that Siwa is actively participating in the state's women activities and is closely engaged with other women movements from different ethnic groups.

"I am told that this interaction is the result of your (Siwa) affiliation with the Sarawak Women Bureau which is the central body that coordinates women activities and development in the state," she added.

On another note, she also said the women in Sarawak have undoubtedly progressed over the last 50 years when Malaysia was formed.

"There is also an increase in the number of women professionals. All this is clear indication that women are an integral part of development," she added.

The progress, she said, is also the result of the many favourable policies carried out by the state and federal governments.

Meanwhile, Siwa president and advisor Kapitan Lucy Lingam believes that the forum will act as an eye opener to Indian women in Sarawak.

She also pointed out that most Indian women in Kuching are housewives, which is a loss to the state's human capital despite the many business opportunities.

During the forum, three main topics were covered: Women's Rights in Civil Marriage, Domestic Violence and Conveyancing Law (Sales and Purchase of Land and House).

Among the key speakers were Manjit Kaur Gill from Manjit Lavinder and Co, Ratanah Devi YS Perumal from Messrs Idris and Company Advocates and Rahimah Suhai from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
