Malaysia women spikers fall to second defeat

KUCHING: Malaysia's women volleyball team may not match

their mighty Thailand counterparts in their second game at the SEA Games but they have accepted the defeat in a positive note.

To the young national squad, it was a good learning experience against the eight-time consecutive SEA Games champions.

In Saturday's match, the Malaysians put up a fight but the Thais were simply too strong, winning 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-9).

Head coach Moh Ung Ming said the girls had really savour the match, especially when they made successful spikes, blocks or saves against the regional powerhouse.

"We were facing a world-class volleyball team and our players have learned a lot from their opponents. They also feel proud to be playing against Thailand," he said after the match.

The girls also earned praises from the Asian Volleyball Association secretary Liu Jun.

"The girls were unable to focus in the first set when they lost 15 straight points and this is due to their lack of international exposure," he pointed out.

Compared to the Thai team which was formed more than 10 years ago, the Malaysian team had only undergone one month of intensive training in Sibu.

"If we can keep the team together for five years, I am confident that they will be a team to be reckoned with," said Moh, adding that countries like Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam all have long-term development programmes for their players.

Moh regarded the SEA Games as a good exposure for his young players as they had the opportunity to play against strong teams in the region.

In the opener, Malaysia lost 0-3 (17-25, 17-25, 22-25) to host Myanmar.

Their next two games will be against Vietnam tomorrow and against Indonesia on Wednesday.

"We were impressed with the set up of this team hence the decision to sponsor this team," said company executive director Lesley Lau.

The young Crocs will play their first match of the Isuzu Cup this Sunday at the Unimas football field.

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 03:11 PM PST

KUCHING: Sarawak stamped their domination in the national Under-16 volleyball championship in Taiping, Perak last Saturday when they won both the boy's and girl's titles.

In the boy's final, defending champions Sarawak edged Selangor 3-2 to make a successful defence of their crown.

They came back from one set down 25-27 to level the score 1-1 with Selangor by winning the second set 25-15.

However, Selangor took the next set 25-23 to regain the lead before Sarawak struck back 25-23 for a 2-2 draw.  In the rubber set, Sarawak's switch in strategy and game play worked as they went on to beat Selangor 17-15 for a hard-earned victory.

Earlier, the Sarawak girls, also defending champions, had an easier game in the final. They beat Selangor 25-16 in the first set but lost 17-25 in the second.

But the girls recovered strongly to win the third and fourth sets 25-10 and 25-17 for a 3-1 victory.

Apart from winning both titles, Sarawak also won the Most Valuable Player (boys and girls), Best Spiker (boys and girls), Best Coach (boys and girls), Best Blocker (boys) and Best Libero (girls).

These latest accolades capped an excellent year for Sarawak Volleyball Association.

Sarawak had also captured the Under-14 boy's and girl's crowns in Selangor last month, and won the gold and bronze medals in the National Open championship in Johor earlier this year.

In Sukma XVII in Kuala Lumpur this year, Sarawak also brought back the women's team gold and men's silver.
