LIMBANG: The Ferro Cement-making course, newly introduced to the local community here, is set to benefit the people and improve their living standard.

Thus, they should not let age hinder them from attending the course, said Pemanca Alie Jaha.

"Through the course, participants get to learn how to produce quality cement, which is in high demand from the landscaping industry.

"As for those who wish to learn for their own benefit, they can carry out Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects at home and more likely by sharing their products they could attract business as well," he told The Borneo Post during his visit to Limbang Giat Mara Centre where the course was held.

The two-day course is the government's initiative to create more entrepreneurs from the low-income community.

"The government has given such a golden opportunity by providing financial support and related courses for the people to improve their lives. Therefore, they should appreciate the chance and learn as much as they can, which I am sure will bring them success if they work hard," he added.

Centre provides rhythmic movement training

KUCHING: Physical movement is an essential agent for the development of children's brains to help them forge forward in learning and behaviour.

The creator of Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT) Moira Dempsey highlighted in her RMT for School Readiness Workshop Sunday that the natural rhythmic movements an infant makes are responsible for laying the foundations of posture, brain development, sensory processing, emotions and behaviour.

"Movement is the means of processing and integrating sensory information and forming an understanding of the world," she explained at the workshop held at The Therapy Playroom at Lorong 3 Jalan Dogan, Batu Kawa here.

A small group of participants, most of them early childhood educators from as far as Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, joined the two-day workshop that began on Saturday.

"Infants have a range of rhythmic movements and activities, including kicking, waving, stretching and rocking, that provide the transition from uncoordinated, random movements to coordinated motor ability," Moira said.

To transition through this time well, Moira emphasised that an infant needs to be given the opportunity, space and time to achieve control.

As such, according to Moira who is from Australia, stimulation in the form of movement and sensory experiences during the early developing years is necessary to optimise individual development.

"The more opportunities an infant is given to practise movement and experience a wider range of sensory impressions, the more he will develop a good foundation for learning as he matures and grows," she said.

"Without adequate movement, the senses do not develop a complete ability to process efficiently, which leads to difficulties with focus, attention, comprehension, reading, writing and various behavioural challenges," she added.

"It is important that we learn to understand the environment around us, because the better we process and make sense of our surroundings the more resources we have to function well. The senses provide us the stimulus to make sense of the world," she elaborated.

Moira stressed that the more opportunities given as an infant to learn to master and control our movements, the more complete a basis we have as we mature to build upon our understanding and experience of the world.

"The more resources we have as we grow the more easily we are able to survive, feel and be safe to mature fully in this world," she said.

Moreover, RMT is also suitable for adults who may have missed part of the development during their growing years as considerable restructuring and learning can take place during adulthood.

The workshop was aimed at looking into movement and development, especially in the pre-school years, and how teachers can use rhythmic movements and other activities with young children to make sure they are ready to participate and achieve in school.

Participants were taught a range of simple and fun activities based on specific movement patterns related to the smooth integration of the primitive reflexes.

Meanwhile, operator of The Therapy Playroom, Sue Walker, said this was a unique workshop offered for the first time in Kuching.

Sue, who is a speech therapist by training, a brain gym instructor as well as reading therapist for dyslexia children, offers a one-to-one and small group training for children experiencing challenges in learning including children with special needs at The Therapy Playroom.

"The Therapy Playroom will also be holding more workshops after Chinese New Year next year," she said.

Among the workshops planned for next year are Introductory Course For Brain Gym, Specialised Brain Gym Courses and Baby Signs for Parents and Children Group.

For more information on The Therapy Playroom and the workshop, the public are advised to contact Sue Walker at 016-8731376.
