No closure of Malaysia-Indonesia border check-point in Tebedu – Police

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 10:38 PM PST

KUCHING: Police dismissed rumours that the Malaysia-Indonesia border checkpoint at Tebedu, Serian, about 95km from here, had been temporarily closed following alleged public unrest in Pontianak, the capital of Indonesia's West Kalimantan province.

Serian police chief DSP Mohd Jamali Uni said the checkpoint remained open as usual and was operating 12 hours daily from 6am.

He told Bernama Tuesday that public bus services between Kuching and Pontianak had also resumed operations as normal after being affected last week by alleged extortion along the route (within the Indonesian province).

"Despite such allegations, we have not received any report yet (from the bus operators) and although the situation seems to be back to normal, we will continue to monitor," he said.

Meanwhile, a source from the Immigration here concurred with Mohd Jamali and said no order had been issued to close the checkpoint temporarily due to security reasons.

The Tebedu border checkpoint is one of several routes linking Sarawak and Indonesia's Kalimantan which is serviced by four Sarawak express bus companies and two from Indonesia.

There were allegations from bus operators that buses entering Pontianak from Sarawak were stopped by groups that demand money to continue their journey, following which a number of bus operators in Sarawak refused to service the route. — Bernama

BAU: National hero, Corporal (Rtd) Paul Nyopis Noyeat, 71, who passed away on Monday was laid to rest at the Kampung Rumih Catholic cemetery yesterday.

The funeral service which started at 1pm at the St Mathias' Chapel was attended by more than 400 family members, former colleagues and friends.

Solemnised by Pastor Michael Jinam Motai, the service was a very emotional and sombre moment, especially when members of the congregation and visitors paid their last respects to the village's hero.

After the funeral service, Paul's casket was brought to the village cemetery in full military honours for the burial service.

Paul left behind his wife Kimen Lambek and seven children Evelyn, Rosni, Noni, Janty, Jailani, Terry and Azura.

Paul, who was awarded the Pingat Gagah Berani (PGB) by the Yang diPertuan Agong on June 8, 1978 passed away at the Bau District Hospital at 9.52am, two months after suffering from a stroke.

The gallantry award was bestowed on him for his heroic act on April 15, 1972 when he singlehandedly fought off 15 terrorists from Pasukan Rakyat Kalimantan Utara (Paraku) at Jalan Sebuku-Tondong, Bau.

He left the service as a corporal in the 8th Ranger Regiment on Sept 20, 1976.

In a brief interview with Malaysian Ex-Services Association (PBTM) Tasik Biru branch chairman Jossem Daweg said Paul had expressed his hope that the association would be able to reach greater heights in the future.

Among those attending the funeral service were Opar assemblyman Ranum Mina, State Veteran Affairs Department (JHEV) director Lt Col Monday Juhid, Bung Bratak Heritage Association chairman Datuk Peter Minos, representatives from the Dayak Bidayuh National Association and community leaders from the nearby villages.

Cabinet posts proposal for MCA raises Masing’s hackles

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 03:33 PM PST

by Samuel Aubrey, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 24, 2013, Tuesday

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing yesterday disagreed with a suggestion to give MCA four appointments should the latter decide to rejoin the federal cabinet.

He said this would be most unfair especially to PRS, which won all six parliamentary seats contested in the 13th general election in May while MCA were almost decimated.

"They (MCA) just won seven out of 35 seats contested. We must bear in mind that political strength of any party is judged by the number of seats won in an election and not by the number of people a party claims to have," he said.

It was reported in a national daily yesterday if MCA decided to take up posts in the federal cabinet, the formula would either be two-plus-two or one-plus-three.

The two-plus-two formula would see the post of two ministers and two deputy ministers, while the one-plus-three formula would see the post of one minister and three deputy ministers .

The ministerial post earmarked for MCA is the Transport Ministry, of which Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein is the acting minister.

Before the 13GE, MCA has four cabinet posts. But due to its disastrous performance, MCA has opted not to accept any cabinet posts.

MCA newly elected president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the party might have another emergency general meeting (EGM) to allow delegates to decide if they wanted the party to allow representatives to serve in the cabinet.

He had said: "As stated by Datuk Yii Phook Hong (the speaker at the recent MCA Assembly), delegates hope the party will be represented in the cabinet. The central leadership will deliberate the matter at a suitable time."

If MCA indeed decided to return to the cabinet, this may prompt Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to reshuffle the cabinet to probably make more appointments.

PRS was allocated one full minister and one deputy minister when the cabinet was announced on May 15, 10 days after the 13GE.

Its deputy president, who is Selangau MP Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, was given the post as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

Party vice president and Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang, on the other hand, declined the post as deputy minister of tourism and was subsequently appointed as Sarawak 1Malaysia Advisory Council chairman.

Following its recent supreme council meeting, PRS is still seeking additional ministerial posts in the federal cabinet because the current quota did not commensurate with its contributions in the last general election.

On the other hand, Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) is also asking for ministerial appointments. This is because the party was not allocated any posts despite winning all its four seats in the 13GE.

On another subject, Masing hoped 2014 would be a year where sincerity of purpose and transparency will be the forefront of BN political objectives.

He said dishonest politicians should have no place in Malaysian politics in 2014. "I know it is a tall order, but do it we must if we want to remain credible administrators of this nation," he stated.

Cable thieves driving businessmen to despair, chamber of commerce seeks protection for members

KUCHING: Life has been tough for many Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) members in recent months, but it has nothing to do with business competition.

They have been brought to their knees by rampant cable thefts and frequent blackouts!

"Incidences can run up to 1,000 cases per month," wailed KCGCCI Industry Committee chairman Steven Lim Ah Ted here yesterday.

He told reporters that they had received many complaints from members who are suffering huge losses as a result of these problems.

Unfortunately, he lamented, there was nothing KCGCCI could do except to approach Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) for a better understanding of issues such as cable theft in industrial areas and the frequent blackouts.

"We hope the company will take prompt and appropriate action to prevent recurrence, and compensate the losses of affected industries and entrepreneurs."

The meeting with SEB has been scheduled to take place sometime next month.

Lim said the problem of cable theft had been rampant recently, with reports coming in from members who have businesses in Batu Kawa, 10th to 27th Mile Penrissen Road, Sejingkat and Muara Tabuan.

"KCGCCI also wants the government to implement the Second Hand Goods Act as soon as possible to curb the cable theft problem."

As the dialogue session with SEB was scheduled to be held next month, he hoped members would give their feedback promptly.

Members can report relevant issues and offer suggestions to KCGCCI to be submitted to Sarawak Energy starting today until noon on Jan 4, 2014.

KCGCCI can be reached at 082-242577 or 082-235578, 082-243675 (Fax) or at kcgcci@gmail.com.

Also present at the press conference were Commerce Committee chairman Tan Hua Min and committee members Ting Wei Tzen, Ho Siew Hua and Ho Kok Shieh.

Canine helps cop to nab pet thieves

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 03:23 PM PST

by Anasathia Jenis, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 24, 2013, Tuesday

KUCHING: A Maltese's short dash to freedom helped police crack two pet shop break-ins shortly before midnight on Sunday.

The dog, which belonged to Little Pet Shop in Jalan Song, was among 12 dogs stolen from Little Pet Shop in Jalan Song, a pet shop at Green Heights, and elsewhere recently.

On Sunday, the adorable white canine managed to escape from the thieves' hideout at Taman Riveria in Samarahan, but a male suspect managed to catch him after a short chase on foot.

A neighbour saw the chase and he recognised the Maltese through Facebook postings about him being missing, and immediately alerted the Little Pet Shop owner, who is identified only as Chong.

Chong immediately lodged a police report and police raided the terrace house at about 11.30pm.

The police raiding team, led by Inspector Dorai Rajah, found 12 dogs of various breeds, such as Maltese, Pincher and Pomerinarian.

They arrested a woman aged 21 years and a 26-year-old man on the spot, and seized a Perodua Myvi car, in which the engine chassis number was found to have been tempered, four gold coloured sports car rims and several electric appliances from the house.

The suspects are believed to be from Sibu.

Of the 12 dogs recovered, seven have been identified by Chong as hers' while a Pincher belonged to the pet shop at Green Heights.

Chong told reporters at the crime scene that her shop was broken into at about 4.30am on Dec 15.

"My workers stayed above the shop, and they heard dogs barking that morning.

"When they went downstairs to check, they saw a man carrying dogs into a blue-coloured Proton Wira. My workers believed there were at least two people involved as they overheard a conversation," said Chong.

She added that her workers then called the police, but by the time they arrived the thieves, who had entered the shop by smashing the front glass window and forcing open the grill, had fled.

"A total of 11 dogs from my shop were stolen, but only seven were recovered and four are still missing."

The pet shop at Green Height was broken into last Friday, and among the items reported missing were a dog, pet food, pet grooming tools and pet cages.

Meanwhile, the four unidentified pets are now kept at Little Pet Shop. Pet owners who have missing pets are advised to come forward to identity them.

Labourer drowned after falling from hanging toilet

SIBU: A labourer was drowned after he slipped and fell into the river from a hanging toilet at Igan River during high tide yesterday morning.

The body of Abdul Razak was found at 3pm faced down on the river bed after the tide had gone down.

His son made the discovery near the toilet when he found the body of his 45-year-old father.

The 13-year-old boy told his family members.

Abdul Razak was from Matu Daro.

He and his family had been staying in a stilted house at Kampung Hilir built on Igan River bed while he started working here.

His family members said it was Abdul Razak's habit to go to the toilet when he woke up early each morning before he went to work.

It was high tide yesterday morning when Abdul Razak was answering nature's call.

His family members did not realise he had fallen into the river.

They thought he had left for work after he went to the toilet.

The police took the body to the hospital.
