Those behind the planned protests have been identified, and risk getting arrested

KUCHING: The police are ready to act against any illegal rallies here in the next few days.

Deputy Kuching Police chief DSP Amihizam Abdul Shukor said the organisers and people behind the planned illegal rallies had been identified and the police would apprehend them if they carried out their plans.

"I urge everybody to work with the police and obey the Public Assembly Act 2012 ," he said when contacted yesterday.

Amihizam said that the police had been compiling reports made  by various bodies against the illegal rallies.

Since Friday, various associations have lodged police reports against those inviting the public to public demonstrations set to be held today and on New Year's Eve.

The Peninsula-based Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) had announced that it would hold a demonstration in front of Chief Minister's residence to call for his resignation today.

SAMM founder Badrul Hisham Shahrin or Che'Gubard had claimed the campaign would not involve street protests but more of an awareness drive.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Anak Muda Sarawak (PAMS) was said to be planning a rally at Padang Merdeka on New Year's Eve.

Though PAMS had said the protest would be against the rising cost of living, it is believed that it would actually be a call to overthrow the government.

Meanwhile ,Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PPB) Satok Branch youth chief Iskandar Sharkawi who led PBB Youth Kuching Zone in lodging a report at Central Police Station yesterday, condemned the illegal rallies which could  threaten the security and peace of the city.

Speaking to reporters, Iskandar said that the PBB viewd the planned rallies as an irresponsible actions and against the law.

Earlier he led a group of PBB Youth members from Semariang, Pantai Damai and Tupong to lodge the police report.

"We want the relevant authorities to stop the illegal rallies as they could create havoc in the city," he said.

Iskandar also wanted the authority to act against a Kuching man using Facebook account to encourage people to join the protest against price hike of goods and services on the night of Dec 3  starting from 11pm onward at Padang Merdeka.

He said the illegal rally by these organisers would further burden the police as they could be better deployed elsewhere in the city to combat crimes.

JAIS to meet temple caretaker over placement of Quran at altar

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 11:37 AM PST

KUCHING: The State Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) will hold a discussion with the caretaker of a Chinese temple in Pending here on the placement of  the Quran at the shrine of a Malay deity in its premises.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Office (Islamic Affairs Department) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, said officers from JAIS had been instructed not to act harshly during the discussion.

"Officers from JAIS will visit the temple and discuss with the caretaker of the temple to remove the Quran and other elements related to Islam from the altar of the deity."

Daud added that the officers would persuade the temple officials to remove the Quran rather than seize from them.

"We will be having discussion without being harsh and neither will we seize the Quran," Daud said in his text message.

He said this when asked on a report that Pertubuhan Peradaban dan Warisan Merlayu (Adab) Sarawak had lodged a police report claiming that the temple   had placed a Muslim prayer mat and al-Quran at the altar of the deity.

Daud believed that there were other temples in the state also incorporating elements of Islam in their worship of some deities.

He added that JAIS had also previously visited a temple in the city that placed the Quran at one of its altars and the caretaker had willingly taken it down after being advised by department's officers.

The assistant minister urged Muslims in the state not to overreact on the issue and let JAIS handle the situation to allow for   an amicable solution.

Flash flood inundating low-lying areas in Sibu

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 11:28 AM PST

SIBU: Flash flood has hit low-lying areas after days of heavy downpour, prompting the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to be on the alert as the King Tide approaches.

DID Divisional engineer Ting Sing Kwong said the King Tide would be here tomorrow, and the water level was expected to be high again after the one earlier this month.

He said the last King Tide measured four metres and this time, it would be 3.8 metres.

"There is a possibility of a flood if the rain continues to pour. I call on residents in the low lying areas to be on the alert," he said.

Ting added that although it had been raining, it had not been heavy enough to cause floods.

He said the rising water in the low lying areas now was caused by their bottle-neck water outlets, where the rain water could not be flushed out fast enough.

The divisional engineer admitted there was a problem at the drains at Chew Sik Hiong commercial area and he had informed Sibu Municipal Council about it.

He said his department had been monitoring the water level at the flood gate near the market.

He said the next King Tide starting tomorrow would stay for about 10 days.

He said the tide would subside to about 3.3 metres on Jan 9.

The Meteorological Department forecasts strong winds and rough seas up to Tuesday.
