Sarawak plays host to 11th Ex Storm for Disaster Management ... Posted: 02 Dec 2013 01:05 PM PST by Antonia Chiam, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 3, 2013, Tuesday KUCHING: Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak played host to the 11th Exercise Special Team Operations and Response Mechanism (Ex Storm) for Disaster Management. The disaster simulation exercise was held here for the first time and took place at an abandoned factory in Kota Samarahan yesterday. It will be held again today. According to senior enforcement officer (operations) Yusri Basri from Putrajaya, the main objective of the exercise was to evaluate how well the state Bomba and other related rescue teams respond to big-scale disasters. "This is a simulation exercise for big-scale disasters at various levels. Besides fire, the personnel involved will be managing disasters such as building collapse, hazardous materials accidents and others. "It involves several agencies namely Bomba, police, Public Defence Department (JPAM), Health Department, Army, Rela and many others. Over 300 personnel are taking part, including 200 Bomba personnel. "Another objective of the simulation exercise is to enhance the coordination and communication between all related agencies during a big-scale disaster as different teams have different roles and disciplines," he told The Borneo Post at the training site yesterday. Yusri said such simulation exercise had been done regularly since 2010. "This is actually the fourth exercise this year, but it is the first time it is held in Sarawak. "An exercise like this will take about six to eight hours to complete. We have a safety crew on standby in case the simulation gets out of control. "We hope such exercise will be a platform for better inter-agencies cooperation when it comes to handling disasters," he said, adding that the team had been setting up since last Friday after they had permission to use the abandoned factory. No ending to SUPP internal crisis - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 02 Dec 2013 01:11 PM PST SIBU: Leadership crisis continued to develop in SUPP yesterday as the faction of Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh warned the other faction under Tan Sri Peter Chin that SUPP – the oldest political party in Sarawak – would perish if the current leaders hang on to power hunger. In a press statement yesterday, Wong's faction said the current leaders must pave way for young members to take over, adding the existing leaders must put this into their meeting agenda as an immediate action plan. The faction said the people were already fed up with SUPP's internal fightings, and party members were disappointed with leaders who talked only about injecting youth leadership while all that they did was holding meetings to take displinary actions against others. The faction said this yesterday in reply to SUPP president Tan Sri Peter Chin, who talked about running a proper election in their next TDC. Chin also commented on the suggestion of Dato Sri Wong, who had repeatedly called on leaders, particularly those who had lost in the general elections, to step down. Chin described Wong's suggestion as impractical. In their reply to Chin, Wong's faction named the current leaders whom they said must step down. Their suggestion included their leader Dato Sri Wong, saying he was willing to hand the party over to young leaders. The others whom they named as veteran leaders who should step down were Chin and his faction members – Datuk Sim Kheng Hui, Datuk David Teng, Datuk Alfred Yap and Datuk Lily Yong. They said these were leaders who had been rejected in the general elections, adding with them hanging on would not help the party to progess. The faction, however, stressed they did not name Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian. They instead felt Sim should be one of the new leaders who should take SUPP to challenge the odds. The faction gave three reasons for injecting the new blood into the party: "Firstly, it will help to difuse the internal struggle, secondly, it will give the party a renewed hope through the youth leaders and lastly, with the current leaders stepping down, it will give chance for the new leaders to rejuvenate the party." On Chin's reaction to pressmen on whether he would seek to return as president in the next party election, Wong's faction noted Chin had remained silent. The faction doubed if Chin was trying to avoid answering the reporters. They noted Chin had once said he would only serve for a term. The faction felt Chin's reaction to pressmen had caused confusion. "Was Chin trying to eat on his own words? We hope not, because it will hurt the leadership image of SUPP." Instead, they felt the party leadership must be dissolved immediately to pave way for a fresh election. "The Registrar of Society (ROS) has not made a ruling on the fate of SUPP. "Worries have mounted the ruling will affect the party. Therefore, before the ROS announces the ruling, we must hold a fresh election that is legal. Don't wait until next year." Meanwhile, on another matter related to the party internal fights, the faction also replied to the accusations of Chin's faction concerning the ministerial duty of Dato Sri Wong on the appointments of Chinese community leaders. They said such appointments had come under the scrutiny of the District Office, Resident's Office and the Chief Minister. They said the ministry also took public opinions into consideration. "Therefore, those appointed leaders are those who are widely accepted by the people."
