Kalang, Zamri, Janjus doubtful starters in tonight's match against PKNS

KUCHING: Sarawak take on PKNS FC in an away match tonight in the Super League on the heels of a three-match winning streak.

However, their task is complicated by three first team players Joseph Kalang Tie, Zamri Morshidi and Milorad Janjus carrying injuries and first choice keeper Sani Anuar Kamsani serving a two-match suspension for being red-carded against Selangor in the FA Cup away win.

The three out-field players would undergo a last minute fitness test today to find out if they could play while Sani's suspension paves the way for new goalkeeper Mohd Fadzley Rahim to make his debut for the Crocs in the Super League.

On Wednesday coach Robert Alberts praised the character of his boys saying the team is starting to gel as a unit.

"They are starting to have this self-belief that we got what it
takes to face any opponent and the win against Selangor was a great feel good factor, although we all know that matches in the Super League won't be easy," he said.

He not too concerned over the loss of first choice keeper Sani as he believed Fadzley was an able replacement.

"Fadzley was impressive when he came in for Sani the match against Selangor and I hope he continues his good display against PKNS."

Alberts is also confident the Crocs could cope with the possible absence of the injured players.

"Despite the injuries to some of our players, we have proven it during the last match that we can grind out the result and that is important."

After their initial wobble in the Super League in which they lost their first two matches 2-0 away to ATM and 1-0 at home to Kelantan, the Crocs bounced back with two FA Cup victories over Penang at home and Selangor away and a comfortable 3-0 home win over Sime Darby in the Super League.

However, it is early days in the league and the jury is still out on whether they could live among the big boys but a victory tonight would go a long way in convincing the doubters.

PKNS and Sarawak last met on July 2012 at the Stadium Negeri in the second tier Premier League match that ended in a scoreless draw.

In the last five encounters between the two teams, the teams were evenly-matched with Sarawak and PKNS both winning two matches and drawing once.

Reminding the Crocs not to under estimate PKNS, Alberts said they were a good side with quality players and were capable of beating any opponent in the Super League, especially when they play at home.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 8.45pm.

PKNS play their home matches at their temporary home at the Selayang Stadium as their home the Shah Alam Stadium is currently undergoing renovation.

Sukma cycling teams move training camp to Perlis

Posted: 06 Feb 2014 08:45 AM PST

by Marshall Tiong. Posted on February 7, 2014, Friday

KUCHING: The state's Sukma cycling team will move to Perlis the host of the next games next week and train there until after their competition in May

Disclosing this yesterday, the state's Sukma coach Dzulkaflee Hassan said the three month stint to help the cyclists adapt to the actual conditions of the tracks reflected the state's commitment to do well in the sport in the games.

"It is a much better use of our funds. Rather than keep paying for expensive flight tickets, it is better to spend it on the riders instead," he added.

The women's and men's teams will be selected from a squad of 23 cyclists with Myanmar SEA Games reserve rider Caroline George and Pahang Sukma champion Rosnina Minggu among them.

Rosnina, who hails from the seaside town of Sematan located some 100km from here, is the defending Sukma  mountainbike XC champion. She is a key part of the five-member women's team that will race in the road events.

Sarawak will be competing in all cycling events in Perlis, including the track events.

Dzukaflee is leaving nothing to chance, having the road team start their training in mid-December, 2013.

"Basically, we are at the first phase of the training, which means the team is building up their endurance level.

"The riders have each logged 4,000kms since then. Probably by next week, we will move into the next phase when the heavy training like the speedwork will begin," he said.

The women's team is basically the same team that went to Pahang which included Aina Zafirah and Caroline George .

Caroline was a member of the Malaysian squad in the Myanmar SEA Games but did not race.

Saxon Racing's Nur Azlina Jumry Ahmad, who was with the NSC's Penang regional centre, is also one of the five.

Azlina, who impressed the NSC coaching staff after two strong competitions overseas including a track meet in Tasmania, has been promoted to train at the Bukit Jalil Sports School.

Team Viking's Noriesmieza Azeman, rounds out the team.

Viking is also contributing to the men team along with Saxon and Sarawak's top team, Team Corbusier.

Corbusier's highly-rated Garry Tay and fast-improving teammate Noel Lim will partner Viking's Mahathir Norsman and Saxon's duo of Hamif Kamaludin and Mohd. Fitri.

Another rider is Team Sextron's Awang Adib.

Hamif is currently attached to the NSC's Ipoh regional centre after impressing in the National Junior Track Championship recently.

Garry and Adib will be doing double duty, racing in both road and mountainbike events.

The Kuching Town student will have his work cut out for him, having also being selected for the road race and the team time trial.

The other three members of the time trial unit are Lim, Adib and Hamif.

As part of their pre-SUKMA schedule, the Sarawak men team is scheduled to race in seven events.

First up is the Shah Alam criterium on the 15th, Feb., followed by the five day U-19 Jelajah Johor in March and then the U-18 Remaja Terengganu.

by Ting Tieng Hee, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on February 7, 2014, Friday

KUCHING: National tennis ace Mohd Assri Merzuki earned his first ranking points for the year at the US F3 Men's Futures in Weston, Florida, United States recently.

The 19-year-old professional from Kampung Semariang, Kuching partnered Ivo Minar of Czech Republic to reach the men's doubles semi-finals of the tournament which was held from Jan 20-26.

The Assri -Minar pair laboured to a 5-7, 7-6(2) (10-8) win over wild card entry Daniel Jr Burgess (US) and Andrey Tereshchenko (Russia) in the first round and they went on to defeat Roman Bordvanov (Moldova) and David Crisovan (US) 6-1, 6-3 in the last eight. They put up a gallant fight against tournament top seeds Jason Jung-Evan King (US) to lost narrowly 2-6, 7-6 (3), (8-10) in the semi-finals.

In the men's singles qualifying, Assri, who was the 12th seed, thrashed Milos Sekulic of Sweden 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.

He then beat Spanish hopeful Ricardo Rodeiro-Stetson 6-2, 6-2 in the second round but was beaten 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 by American Daniel Kerznerman in the third round.

Assri commenced his hunt for ranking points in the year by competing in the men's singles at the US F1 Men's Futures in Plantation, Florida from Jan 6-12.

He bowed out of the first round after losing 0-6, 1-6 to Brian Page Jnr of the US.

In the next tournament which was the US F2 Men's Futures in Sunrise, Florida from Jan 13-19, Assri got past the first round of the men's singles qualifying by beating his Canadian opponent Jordan Sweeney 6-1, 6-0.

He was shown the exit in the second round by Jonathan Mridha of Sweden who won 7-6(4), 6-2.

It was the same story for Assri at the US F4 Men's Futures at Palm Coast, Florida last week as the tournament fourth seed could only reach the second round of the singles qualifying after receiving a bye in the first round.

He was beaten 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 by Ryota Tanuma of Japan.

Assri partnered Ivo Minar in the men's doubles of the same event to stage a upset win of 6-0, 6-3 over second seeds Malcolm Harrison (US) and Pedro Sakamoto (Brazil). They were stopped in the second round by the American pair Taylor Harry Fritz and Martin Redlicki who triumphed 6-1, 7-6(5).

After competing in the four US tournaments this year, Assri is now ranked 1,388 in the men's singles and 1376 in the men's doubles.

He will play in two more Men's Futures tournaments before flying to the Philippines to compete in the first leg of the ITF Men's Futures US$15,000 from Mar 24-30 and returning to Kuching for the second leg at Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Tennis Centre from Mar 31 to Apr 6.

Assri will then spearhead the Sarawak tennis team at Sukma XVII in Perlis from May 27 to June 4, after which he will return to train and compete in the US.

Meanwhile, SLTA president Dato Patrick Liew said he is pleased with Assri's progress but wanted him to do even better.

"Based on the feedback from Assri's coach Doru Sorin Morariu, the young man will have to work harder to overcome his weaknesses," he said.

"Doru is very excited and impressed with Assri's recent performance and he stressed that Assri's problem is his mental focus. He tends to lose his focus when trailing his opponents."

"Assri needs to adapt and adjust to play against those who have been playing in the ATP/ITF tournaments for more than 20 years."

"We are encouraged by the fact that Assri is an aggressive, determined and committed player as well as a fighter. Give him more time and he will be there among the top players in the world," added Liew.

He felt that Assri had to play in more high level tournaments to become a better player.

"He will be the best in Malaysia and I believe it would be very hard for anyone in the country to beat him," said Liew.

FAM decides to award abandoned Cup match to JDT

Posted: 06 Feb 2014 08:43 AM PST

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has decided to award the abandoned FA Cup match between Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) and T-Team to the former as T-Team had failed to resume the second half.

With FAM's decision to award a 3-0 victory to JDT, the Johor side which was embroiled in a conflict with T-Team during their FA Cup match which was abandoned at half time after T-Team refused to continue the second half at the Larkin Stadium, apparently for fear of their safety, advance to the quarterfinals.

FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin who made the announcement after the FAM Local Competitions Committee meeting at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya, here yesterday said the match was awarded to JDT because T-Team had failed to resume the second half.

He said the decision to not resume the second half was made by T-Team and not the match officials who were in charge.

During the match played at the Larkin Stadium, T-Team refused to resume the match after half time, claiming the safety of the players was at stake, since a high ranking JDT official had allegedly assaulted a player and the fitness coach from T-Team while heading to the dressing room.

Hamidin said officials from both teams and the match officials were called up to give their statements before a decision was made.

Meanwhile, FAM Local Competitions Committee chairman Datuk Affandi Hamzah who is also a FAM vice president said the match officials had confirmed that the match could have been played but it was T-Team who refused to play.

"According to the competition rules, only the match official has the jurisdiction to stop or abandon a match, not the teams," he said.

In this case, the referee did not make the decision to stop the match.

As for the alleged incident at the Larkin Stadium, Affandi said the issue would be handled by the FAM secretariat and an investigation carried out since both teams had lodged police reports.

Hamidin on the other hand assured that investigations would be carried out and nobody would be spared from the rules. — Bernama

33 civil servants receive incentives from govt

Posted: 06 Feb 2014 08:43 AM PST

PUTRAJAYA: Thirty-three civil servants who did the nation proud through their achievements in the recent Myanmar SEA Games and other international competitions last year received recognition and incentives from the government.

The incentives under the Malaysian Government Services Welfare and Recreation Council Incentive Scheme (Maksak) was presented by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa at the Perdana Putra building, here, yesterday.

Among the notable recipients were seven-time Mr Universe bodybuilding title winner Sazali Abd Samad, who received RM18,000; Buda Anchah (RM12,000) and Johor sportsman Mohd Jironi Ridhuan.

Ali Hamsa in his speech said unearthing athletes and developing them to excel was not an easy task and needs the cooperation of all the relevant authorities in the civil service.

"I urge the coaches and athletes to work towards a paradigm shift to absorb elements of sports science and state of the art technology to improve their performances," he said.

Ali Hamsa said Maksak had a rich tradition and history in the sports arena since its formation in 1956 as many notable athletes had come through its mill.

He said names like sprinters Tan Sri Dr M Jegathesan, Datuk Marina Chin, Rabuan Pit and the late Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Minhat who is known as 'Raja Bola' were products of Maksak.

"The excellent legacy has continued through athletes like Sazali Samad and shooter Nor Suryani Taibi," he said.

He hoped the achievement of these athletes and the incentives offered to them would inspire other athletes in the civil service to raise their performance in their respective fields. — Bernama
