Petrol station under probe as RM26,400 subsidized diesel seized Posted: 08 Feb 2014 09:36 AM PST by Johan Aziz. Posted on February 9, 2014, Sunday KENINGAU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Office here confiscated 66 barrel drums of subsidized diesel worth about RM26,400 on Friday at about 3pm. "This seizure does not include the diesel tank of a three-tonne truck which has been modified," said head of the ministry's office here, A. Runji Abdul Hamid yesterday. Speaking to the media, he said the seizure was carried out in a raid on a hut behind a private house located at Keningau-Tenom road here. He said a total of five members, including officials from the ministry here conducted the raid at the location based on information from the public and discovered the stored up subsidized diesel believed to have been misappropriated. "Initial investigations showed their modus operandi was to fill diesel at gas stations using a truck tank that has been modified, bring it back to the storage location and transfer it into barrel drums for resale to mills and timber camps," he said. Runji said their activities were believed to have been going on for the past six months and the case is being investigated under the Supply Act 1961. He said the incident was regrettable as even a gas station here was in cahoots with their activities based on the seizure of a receipt of purchase amounting to RM7,200. According to him, further investigations will be carried out on the petrol station, whose license renewal application has been suspended with immediate effect until investigations are completed. Task force to back ESSCom in curbing illegal influx Posted: 08 Feb 2014 09:21 AM PST by Elton Gomes. Posted on February 9, 2014, Sunday KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Special Task Force is expected to be in talks with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) on issues of illegal immigrants in the country. Sabah Federal Task Force director Datuk Hj Suhaimi Mohd Salleh said the department would sit down with ESSCom director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek to discuss on joint operations along the east coast of Sabah, which is under ESSCom, to curb the influx of illegal immigrants. "We will sit down and discuss on this issue. There were several plans to organize joint operations with ESSCom but lots of things need to be taken into consideration such as funding from the federal government," he said when met at the Ops Tanduk operation at the Luyang community centre yesterday. Yesterday's operation saw about 256 illegal immigrants detained for failure to produce valid documents to be in the country. From the figure, 195 are from the Philippines while 61 are from Indonesia. Suhaimi said the operation was concentrated at several squatter areas, construction sites and business premises around the state capital and in Penampang. "As of today (yesterday) we have checked 625 people and from the figures, we detained 256 of them when they failed to produce any documents upon request by our enforcement personnel. "All those detained will be taken to several detention centres for further investigation before being deported back to their country of origin," he said, adding that Ops Tanduk is a joint operation with the Sabah Immigration Department, the Chief Minister's Department, the National Registration Department and City Hall (DBKK). BN committed to devt in opposition areas – Max Posted: 08 Feb 2014 09:19 AM PST MATUNGGONG: Kota Marudu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili has assured that the Barisan Nasional will continue with the business of development and transformation of the rural sector. Ongkili said the provision of basic infrastructure is crucial for transformation, and it could only be provided by the government. Therefore, the government will continue to do its very best to provide for the people's development needs, even though the Matunggong state seat is an opposition seat, he said when launching the Kampung Rita longhouse here yesterday. The new modern, semi-concrete 20-door Kampung Rita longhouse was built at a cost of RM1.2 million in order to ensure that the longhouse residents would have better and more comfortable living conditions with basic amenities, he added. According to Ongkili, the Kampung Rita longhouse was one among six longhouses which had been rebuilt and launched within the past three years in Matunggong to replace the original dilapidated longhouses. He also said 12 more longhouses were in various stages of construction, with funds from the Prime Minister's Department. "The opposition-held areas will lag behind in progress unless the people change their mentality and cooperate with the government to ensure development plans for their areas are successful. "The Barisan Nasional plans to build 20 more longhouses in Matunggong over the next five years, and this will be made possible through approved allocations by the Prime Minister, who has been very attentive to the needs of the rural people despite there being many applications for allocations to rebuild homes in other constituencies and Matunggong being an opposition seat. "It is proven that only Barisan Nasional can truly assist the people," Ongkili said. However, he warned that the development plans would not be realised if the people persisted in holding an opposition perspective and the local community would eventually be left behind economically by their own doing. "The people must help themselves in order for the government to help them," Ongkili advised. GST talks between KL, Sabah needed to ensure no losses – Mositun Posted: 08 Feb 2014 09:19 AM PST TENOM: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) secretary-general Datuk Johnny Mositun has called on the Sabah government to initiate talks with the federal government to safeguard its revenue base following the country's adoption of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). This, he said, is because both federal and state revenue collection patterns and parameters will see some radical changes under the GST. "We must not forget the principles that govern revenue collection and sharing between the federal government and the states of Sabah and Sarawak when the Malaysia Agreement was signed," Mositun said when closing a seminar for party members with the theme 'Mind Transformation to Enhance the Struggle of PBS in the Eyes of a Multiracial Society' organised and hosted by the party's Melalap division. He also said it would be necessary to study the GST in detail in order to pre-empt any possible losses or reduction of state revenue under the new tax order. "The government to government talks I propose would allow both sides to do the necessary fine-tuning to protect the interests of both the federal and state governments and to avoid unnecessary complications later on. "My Barisan Nasional colleagues in Sarawak have expressed similar sentiments on this issue," Mositun said. The average Malaysian, by and large, are not well-versed with the country's tax collection and revenue sharing system, especially when it concerns state and federal taxes, he added. "Due to the circumstances leading to the formation of Malaysia, taxes and revenue sharing between the federal government and the two eastern states are quite different in scope and principle compared to that applied in the states of Peninsular Malaysia," Mositun pointed out. He cited palm oil and gaming as examples where the state imposed an additional tax on top of the federal tax. According to Mositun, the federal government provides Sabah with ample funds for infrastructure and development, but Sabah also relies heavily on state taxes and revenues for administration and development due to its size and other circumstances. "Under these circumstances, it is only proper that any vague, ambiguous terms or aspects of GST should be addressed and fine-tuned beforehand to ensure that state rights and interests are not compromised, inadvertently or otherwise. "In principle, GST is indeed a fairer and more equitable system of taxation in keeping with the new world economic order. Correctly and fairly implemented, there will be no problems," he stressed. Meanwhile, Mositun said he is looking into the possibility of organising talks and discussions for party cadres and leaders at all levels to explain the GST system to the people at large. "PBS will do its part to explain the GST to Sabahans and we may invite some experts, academics and senior government officials for a session with members before or during our coming anniversary in March. "There are simply too many misconceptions over this issue that need to be clarified for the good of the people and the country," he said. On the seminar itself, Mositun said it was aimed at sustaining the strength and resilience of party members to face challenging times ahead. "To this end, PBS Chief Information Officer Datuk Jahid Jahim gave the members a talk on the PBS struggle, so that our members at the division and branch levels would not be swayed from continuing the party struggle, while Supreme Council Member Peter Allion presented a paper on laws relevant to pertinent issues and the party struggle," he said. Mositun also said it was important to keep the members properly and adequately informed of the current situation in the state and country, especially in this present era and changing political landscape. "As such, in my closing speech, I reminded all PBS members to do their part in disseminating accurate information to the people on relevant issues. "I also told them that while it was important to recruit more party members, it was equally, if not more important that they arm themselves with accurate information and knowledge which they could impart to the people at large as that would effectively increase support for the party and the Barisan Nasional in general," he said. The seminar was opened by PBS Deputy President and federal cabinet minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili. Also present was PBS Melalap Division Chief cum State Rural Development Minister Datuk Radin Malleh.
