Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is museum taskforce chairman, conducted the briefing at Bangunan Baitul Makmur. The project involves the demolition of the present Dewan Tun Abdul Razak and replacing it with a state of the art purpose-built museum building with a connected annexe for collections storage, conservation, museum administration and research. The project is expected to be completed in phases by 2019 because of the need to have parts of the Sarawak Museum open to visitors. Among those present were Cahya Mata Sarawak group managing director Datuk Richard Curtis, Sarawak Museum director Ipoi Datan and Arkitek KDI Sdn Bhd director Dato Sri John Lau. Sarawak bowler Daniel Tan strikes gold in Perlis – BorneoPost ... Posted: 28 May 2014 11:57 AM PDT DANIEL Tan Yan Han got the Sarawak bowling team to a golden start when he bagged the boys singles gold at the Perlis Bowl, Kayangan Square Mall in Kangar yesterday. Daniel bowled lines of 226, 192, 160, 256, 257 and 246 for a total pinfalls of 1,337 to finish on top in the 84-bowler field which was divided into Squad A and Squad B.His average game was 222.8 pinfalls. Finishing 16 pinfalls behind Daniel in second place was Ahmad Adil Abdul Halim from Melaka while Syed Muhammad Syed Hussien came in third with 1,315 pinfalls. Jonathan Ding Sagan was unfortunate to miss the bronze medals by nine pins and other Sarawakians finishing in the top 30 were Mohd Uzair Irsyad Noor Azrul (6th), Muhammad Syafiq Sajeli (9th) Christopher Tiong Lee Siong (18th) and Anthony Luang Cheng (21st). "I came here with the target on winning gold in my final Sukma outing and I am very happy today to have achieved my aim," said a delighted Daniel when interviewed after the prize presentation. It was also a marked improvement for Daniel who won the team gold in Melaka in 2010 and the team silver in Pahang in 2012. "This is a very good start for me and I hope my winning the gold today can inspire myself and teammates to go for more golds in Perlis," he said. He will be competing in six more events namely doubles, trios, team, mixed doubles, all-events and masters. On the men's singles competition, Daniel said he bowled with less pressure when compared to the previous two Sukma as he is now more experienced and also one of the senior bowlers in the Sarawak squad. Meanwhile, head coach Jackson Ting felt happy for Daniel in winning the gold as it was the last Sukma outing for the 21-year-old bowler. "Actually, the boys were bowling late into the night and finished their games at 1pm today and I am glad that they all were able to bowl under such conditions," he said. According to him, Daniel was initially struggling along the lines and with Jackson's and team technical coach Paul Robert Delany's assistance and guidance, Daniel was able to complete his games with a flourish to land the gold. "I am also happy for being able to help Daniel achieve his target of winning gold in his final Sukma appearance," he added. On the girls, Jackson said they were on par with other bowlers technically but lost out on experience to the national elite bowlers. Nerosha Keligit Thiagarajan was Sarawak's best performer in the women's singles competition, finishing in sixth place with 1,259 pinfalls. Others finishing in the top 30 were Jocelyna Judith Jonathan (14th), Jackelyn Ng (17th) and Syafiqah Sajeli (27th). The gold medallist was Natasha Mohamed Roslan of Selangor who felled 1,339 pins and silver went to Radin Nur Najwa Radin Dzulfakar of Kuala Lumpur with 1,329 pinfalls. Third was Johor's Sharifah Fatimah Syed Hussien who accumulated a total pinfalls of 1,265. "I am hoping that the girls can win golds in the remaining events and they have been trying very hard to win medals for the state," said Jackson. He added that Sarawak's main focus had always been in winning the team event and "we have to make sure that everything especially the equipment is in place." The boys and girls doubles started yesterday and will end today, to be followed by mixed doubles, trios on Saturday and Sunday and team events next Monday. The bowling competition in this 17th edition of Sukma ends on next Tuesday (June 3) with the boys and girls masters. |
Stroke patient in dire need of assistance to support family ... Posted: 28 May 2014 12:12 PM PDT KUCHING: SUPP Central Women Section is appealing to the general public to provide generous support and assistance to an unemployed man who had suffered a stroke and leaving him in a poor financial position. According to a press statement yesterday, 47-year-old Zafari Ambi, a former employee of Borneo Hotel, was forced to retire early following a stroke attack half a year ago. Now wheelchair bound, he has lost his ability to work and provide for his family of six children aged between 10 and 18 years. His wife took care of him round the clock while his 18-year-old daughter worked part-time, earning a small income to help support the family. Zafari also has a 15-year-old son who was diagnosed with leukemia at a very young age. SUPP Central Women Section has recently helped Zafari applied for social welfare aid which has been approved and came timely to provide a temporary relief to the family. But even with the welfare aid and side income from his eldest daughter, the amount was still too insignificant for the family to sustain. The family is now in a dire financial situation and urgently needed help from all quarters. Zafari's former co-workers, who were concerned with his situation, have voluntarily donated a good amount of items including dry food and some daily necessities such as cooking oil, rice and sugar. Those who wish to help can contact SUPP Central Women Section at 082-246999 or for further inquiries. |
Sebuyau packed for inaugural festival - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 24 May 2014 11:53 AM PDT by Lim How Pim, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on May 25, 2014, Sunday KUCHING: The inaugural Sebuyau Festival 2014, which was launched yesterday, packed the town centre of Sebuyau, some 140km from here. The crowd was clearly excited when Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem and wife Puan Sri Datuk Jamilah Anu arrived at the Sebuyau Waterfront for the launch. The three-day festival, which ends today, aims to among others promote the town as a destination for water sports and activities in line with Visit Sarawak 2014 and Visit Malaysia 2014. Apart from the popular regatta, local entrepreneurs also have a platform to promote and showcase their products at the over 130 stalls. Adenan said he was pleased the community has embraced the spirit of 1Malaysia by ensuring everyone lives harmoniously. He pointed out that there is more to Sebuyau than just stones, given the quarries in the district, adding more development would be coming Sebuyau's way. Meanwhile, Sebuyau assemblyman Datuk Julaihi Narawi, who is also Assistant Minister of Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion), said Adenan is no stranger to the area but his visit yesterday marked his first since becoming Chief Minister. "He is qualified and justified to lead Sarawak to achieve its developed status and the successor of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who has been appointed as Head of State," he said. Now that Sebuyau is accessible by road, Julaihi said he was thrilled to see many vehicles parked along the way leading to the town centre for the festival. "This shows the development the Barisan Nasional government has brought to Sebuyau," he said. |
Journalist gunned down in Libya's Benghazi — Medics - The Borneo ... Posted: 27 May 2014 04:52 PM PDT BENGHAZI, Libya: A newspaper editor and critic of Libya's jihadists was gunned down Monday in the lawless eastern city of Benghazi, an Islamist stronghold, medics said. They said Meftah Bouzid, 50, editor of the weekly newspaper Burniq, was shot dead in the centre of the Mediterranean city. A journalist and analyst, Bouzid often went on television to criticise Islamic extremists, resulting in threats to his life according to a friend. Libyan authorities have struggled to stamp out lawlessness in a country awash with weapons from the 2011 revolution which toppled longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Ex-rebels, especially Islamists, have been blamed for deadly attacks on dozens of members of the security forces, judges and foreigners in Benghazi, the city where the revolution was born. Bouzid's murder came a day after Libya's new Prime Minister Ahmed Miitig won a vote of confidence Sunday in the embattled interim parliament for his proposed cabinet. But separatists who have been blocked oil terminals in eastern Libya rejected the Miitig government in a statement Monday, and called on outgoing premier Abdullah al-Thani to keep his post. Thani resigned earlier this month for security reasons, saying he and his family had come under attack. The position of the separatists, ex-rebels who have turned against the interim authorities, reflects the deep power struggles that have been playing out in the North African country between politicians and militias since Gaddafi's overthrow. Bouzid and his paper came out openly in support of a military drive launched on May 16 by renegade general Khalifa Haftar to crush Islamists in Benghazi, in a so-called "dignity" campaign. Hundreds of people attended Bouzid's funeral, including a number of journalists, an AFP correspondent said, and journalists gathered in Benghazi and Tripoli to speak out against attacks on the media. — AFP |
Japan shatters Malaysia's hopes - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 25 May 2014 12:13 PM PDT NEW DELHI: Malaysia's hopes of bringing home the Thomas Cup after a 22-year wait were shattered when Japan edged Malaysia 3-2 in the final at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium here yesterday. This is the first time Japan entered the final of the prestigious badminton tournament. Datuk Lee Chong Wei, the world number one men's singles player, thrashed his opponent Kenichi Tago 21-12, 12-16 in the opening match to put Malaysia ahead. Malaysia's first doubles, Tan Boon Heong/Hoon Thien How, however, lost to Kenichi Hayakama/Hiroyuki Endo 21-12, 17-21, 19-21 bringing the tie to 1-1. Second singles Chong Wei Feng was brushed aside by Kento Momota 21-15,21-17 giving Japan the lead. Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong came to the rescue when they won against Keigo Sonoda/Takeshi Kamura 19-21, 21-17, 21-12 causing the tie to be decided by the last singles. Liew Daren put up a tremendous fight against Takuma Ueda in the decider but went down in 12-21, 21-18, 17-21. Chong Wei said winning the first point for the team and country was important. "My second set was tough. He (Tago) was leading 15-10. I didn't give up and chased him point by point until I was leading at 17-15 and then went all the way. "This is my first Thomas Cup final and being the first singles, I wanted to win the first point so that there will be less pressure on the first doubles and second singles," he told reporters afterwards. A disappointed Wei Feng, who had won all his previous matches in the tournament said it was a "pressure-cooker" atmosphere. "I was not able to play at my own pace today. He was able to break my game play from the beginning and my defence also slipped. In terms of tactics, I lost," he said. — Bernama |
