DAP launches Sabah Dream - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 27 Nov 2013 10:15 AM PST KUALA LUMPUR: DAP yesterday launched the "Impian Sabah" (The Sabah Dream) movement to penetrate rural communities in the state after its failture to capture more seats in Sabah in the 13th General Election. The first project under the movement will target a village under the Kota Marudu seat, which was previously won by Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili with just a 842-vote majority. "We were able to 'destroy' the 'fixed deposit' moniker for Johor and Sarawak, by increasing our votes received significantly … However, for Sabah, we were only able to increase our votes by 3.4 per cent to 35.9 per cent," DAP chairman Lim Kit Siang told reporters at the launching here. "Hence, it is undeniable that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) must pull out all the stops to increase our electoral support in the state with 26 parliamentary seats, including Labuan." "Impian Sabah" is the second project under the larger "Impian Malaysia" project and after "Impian Sarawak", which was launched in September aimed at capturing rural Sarawak. Despite targeting 33 parliamentary seats from the Johor, Sarawak and Sabah — the three states that helped keep a weakened ruling coalition in power in the last polls — PR only managed to secure 14 seats. Of the three states, PR won only three parliamentary seats in Sabah — Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, and Penampang — with the first two won by DAP. The first outreach project in Sabah will be a RM25,000 gravity-feed water system at Kampung Samparita Laut in Kota Marudu, where over 200 of its Dusun villagers have no access to piped water and currently depend on the murky river nearby. The village falls under Kota Marudu, won by Ongkili in the May polls after a four-cornered fight involving DAP, Sarawak-based State Reform Party (STAR), and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP). "If not for the splitting of votes with STAR, PR would have own the seat. Hence, every effort must be made in these marginal seats so as to ensure that PR will win these seats in the next general election," Lim added. However, DAP denied yesterday that it will only be carrying out projects in areas where BN won with minor majorities in the May polls, stressing that its main agenda is to deliver their promises to the rural areas. "I think votes are secondary …We do make full use of our efforts to assist the people of Sabah. We believe votes will come if you do well. We're less concerned about votes today, more concerned about actually delivering what we promised," said Tony Pua, the DAP national publicity chief. According to Pua, the second project will be done in Tenom, the parliamentary seat won by Umno's Datuk Raime Unggi by a 3,886-vote majority in the 13th General Election. PR's representative was PKR's Masdin Tumas, who won 5,885 votes. Sabah DAP chairman and Kota Kinabalu MP Jimmy Wong, Sabah DAP secretary and Kapayan assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi, Sabah DAP assistant secretary and Likas assemblyman Junz Wong, Sandakan MP Stephen Wong and Sri Tanjong assemblyman Chan Foong Hin, Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Wai and Serdang MP Dr Ong Kian Ming were present at the launching. Wong said DAP would explore, study and identify critical programmes and projects that need to be carried out in Sabah to uplift the well-being of the rural and poor villagers. "We will organise teams of members and volunteers to penetrate these remote villages to undertake projects such as micro-hydro electric dams to provide electricity, gravity feed water systems, repair works on basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges as well as economic upliftment programmes via sustainable sources of income," he said after the launching of the program. He said Impian Malaysia agents are required to take part as volunteers in these programmes to bring significant changes to the livelihood of these villagers. The participation of Impian Malaysia agents in the campaign will make an immense difference to these people, the Kota Kinabalu member of parliament said. "We will be kicking off the first Impian Sabah project this weekend to build a gravity-feed water system at Kampung Samparita Laut, Kota Marudu, a village that is about a three-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu, including an hour of off-road driving," he said. According to Wong, Kampung Samparita has a population of more than 200 people who have no access to piped water. These villagers rely on the main river source for drinking, washing, and cleaning. "In fact, they don't even have toilets because the villagers said there isn't any point in having toilets if there isn't any water. The average drinking water colour looks like Nescafe susu and during rainy days, when the colour turns to 'Nescafe kurang susu', they will collect the rainwater for drinking. With this project, we hope to be able to provide running water to the whole village," he said. Wong said the project would involve two batches of volunteers from November 30 to December 8 and December 12 to December 21. The volunteers will be staying with the villagers, assisting to connect pipes, burying pipes, cement work, and all work related to building a gravity water feed system. 'Impian Malaysia' or the Malaysian Dream is a movement started by Kit Siang in May after the 13th General Election that envisions a plural society where all her citizens are united as one people, rising above their ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic differences as the common grounds binding them as one citizenship exceed the differences that divide them because of their ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural divisions. The movement hopes to gather more Malaysian volunteers (including non-party members) to be 'Impian Malaysia' agents for its activities and programs to promote Malaysian identity and consciousness particularly among the young generation of Malaysians. In September 2013, DAP had successfully launched the first pillar of the movement – 'Impian Sarawak' – and has completed several projects, involving nearly 40 'Impian Malaysia agents'. Impian Malaysia agents who cannot take part directly can certainly take part in this thrust by attending fund-raising dinners or donating online via https://dapmalaysia.org/donate. They may even run their own fund-raising activities. To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Bank of China opens Kuching branch, marks foray into East M'sia ... Posted: 24 Nov 2013 02:41 PM PST by Sharon Kong, sharonkong@theborneopost.com. Posted on November 25, 2013, Monday KUCHING: Bank of China (Malaysia) Bhd has officially opened its doors to its first branch in East Malaysia and has also launched its Chinese Visa Application service centre here yesterday. "The establishment of Bank of China here in Kuching is indeed very much relevant in supporting the aspiration of our country in attaining the status of high income nation, by the year 2020. "So much so at the state's level, where efforts to elevate and prepare the state's economy towards a high income and advanced economy by 2020 are aggressively pursued and implemented," Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development Sarawak Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said in a speech at the ceremony. He further highlighted that Sarawak is intensifying its effort in attracting more foreign and private investments to the state. In doing so, the state is strategically leveraging on its energy and natural resources, particularly for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) area where focus is on large scale industrial development. With this scenario, the state of Sarawak is continuing its effort towards improving industrial infrastructures, transportation networks, and logistics, as well as comparing competitive human capital to meet the demands of the new industry. Ultimately, the increase in these investments is set to spur the state of Sarawak's economic activity. Therefore, he explained that in the coming years, there will likely be a lot of international business ventures and activities coming to the state of Sarawak. "With the presence of Bank of China in Sarawak, the private sector together with the state government of Sarawak, should look into leveraging on its presence to facilitate further the relevant business dealings and activities in the area of international and cross border investment ventures. "I would therefore encourage the Sarawak business community and state government of Sarawak to tap on the expertise and experience of Bank of China for our international ventures. I'm confident that Bank of China will definitely provide its best services in meeting the needs of all of us, particularly the business community," Wong advised. Bank of China Ltd (Bank of China), which holds a history of 101 years, previously had branches in Malaysia back in the early days. From 1939 to 1959, Bank of China had branches in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, Seremban, and Batu Pahat. Under the support and effort from various parties, Bank of China officially restablished in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 23, 2001 with a full commercial banking license, with branches in Muar, Penang, Klang, Johor Bahru, and Puchong. By setting up its sixth branch in Kuching, Bank of China Malayisa has successfully extended its financial services network coverage to East Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in the history of Bank of China Malaysia. As for the outsourcing and joint venture of Chinese Visa Application service, the service has been around for five years. Bank of China set up its first Chinese Visa Application service centre in London since 2008 and to date, Bank of China has a total of 14 centres in Italy, France, Indonesia, Canada, and Malaysia. Why I welcome Ibrahim 'Comedian' Ali to Sarawak – BorneoPost ... Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:33 AM PST I LOVE comedy and I love comedians. I love great stand-up comedians like Bob Hope, George Burns and Don Rickles, talk show nuts David Letterman, Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel and funny big screen players Jim Carey and Robin Williams. My favourite funny women have to be the ever elegant Ellen DeGeneres and the classy Joan Rivers. But hey, these are all foreign personalities. They are all Americans. What about those at home? Well, as a Malaysian and to show patriotism to my nation and my own kind, I must also support our own comedians. Oh yes, I do. I have a favourite Malaysian comedian and I love him like a brother. You'd better believe this – he is Ibrahim 'Comedian' Ali. I've added his middle name 'Comedian' several times in this column and he has never complained. Since he did not create a fuss, I can safely assume that he likes his middle name. I did not want to add a 'Datuk' before his name because he confused me when he mentioned that he already had several datukships and was unsure which one rhymes better with his great name. So until he decides and makes it known, I will refrain from using his honorific as he could be sensitive about his greatness. A comedian makes people laugh. Some people have to pay to see a stand-up comedy. Those who have to buy laughter probably read too much into the saying that "Laughter is the best medicine." But laughter does not have to be bought with guys like Ibrahim in our midst. When he opens his mouth, we know what's coming. It is either a racial or religious joke. Instead of screaming and shouting at Ibrahim and getting all worked up and angry over his oft-repeated racial and religious slurs, why don't we laugh instead? Think of him as a comedian telling jokes for a living. When someone tells jokes for a living, it doesn't matter to him whether people laugh at them or not. He will keep on telling jokes because he has nothing better to do. If we think of Ibrahim as the joker who tells jokes which nobody laughs at, wouldn't we be laughing at a stupid joker? The idea is to turn a negative into a positive, think of Ibrahim as a bad comedian who tells jokes which are not funny at all. Then, we can all laugh at the idiot. The next time he calls for an uprising of the Malay race, let us laugh. Because everyone knows (even the Malays themselves) that they are the dominant race in the country. So it's a non-issue in the first place. The next time he accuses the other races of planning a crusade against Malays and Islam, let us laugh. Why? Because no Malaysian is interested in a crusade. They prefer to spend their valuable time making money, forgetting about God at times. The next time he asks for the burning of the Bible, let us laugh too because no one will do that. Well, it didn't happen, did it? The next time he says that Chinese and Indians should go back to their ancestral lands if they are not happy here, let us laugh. You know, that poor fella has no homeland to return too. The Orang Asli were among the original inhabitants of Malaya, certainly not Ibrahim. When he wants to come to Sarawak, many of you were unhappy and asked that he be banned from entering. Some BN personalities who were disturbed by Ibrahim's plan to set up a Perkasa chapter in Sarawak included Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, Tan Sri William Mawan, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Datuk Peter Minos. Add those politicians from the opposition, religious and civil society groups and the general public and we can see that a large cross-section of Sarawakians do not welcome Ibrahim's presence in the state. But I welcome the Perkasa comedian to Sarawak. I think that all Malaysians should be allowed to travel freely throughout the country. If there are people with evil intentions, the laws of the land should suffice in dealing with them. It's wrong to restrict citizens in their movement within the country. When he steps into our home state, I think we should engage him in conversation. That is a more sensible thing to do than to just chuck him aside. Despite being a known rabble-rouser, I believe Ibrahim is also able to dialogue in a civil manner. Before that, I will ask him to prepare new, original jokes to tell Sarawakians so that we can all have a good laugh. He must leave his stale jokes behind in Malaya. We have heard enough of them. The point is that we have unknowingly given Ibrahim the publicity and mileage that he does not deserve with our outbursts against him. We have placed him on such a high pedestal when he should be down low like the rest of us. So I say, let's just welcome Ibrahim and engage him in conversation. Let him see for himself and understand why Sarawakians are unable to accept his extreme stance on race and religion. It's better that we allow him to learn how different we are from what he thinks of his fellow Malayans. And of course, I look forward to a stand-up comedy act from our Perkasa friend, never mind if he is not Don Rickles or Robin Williams. With Ibrahim Ali, I need to laugh because I do not wish to be stressed by a joker. Comments can reach the writer via columnists@theborneopost.com.
