KUCHING: The Sarawak Society for the Blind Kuching will be giving more emphasis to their rattan-weaving programme to generate more income.

The programme was given a boost from the state Forest Department which donated seven bundles of rattan worth RM3,000 to the society.

"We promise to make full use of this rattan to produce our iconic rattan baskets and provide more training in basket weaving," said Sarawak Society for the Blind president Dato Dr Hsiung Kwo Yeun during a simple handing-over ceremony at its Kuching branch yesterday.

He also revealed that rattan being a raw material is very hard to come by throughout the whole state, with a market price of between RM18 to RM40 per kg.

Some of their members, he said, have also travelled to the Peninsular with a mission to buy and export the rattan back to the state which turned out fruitless.

"Besides Kuching, other branches in Sibu and Miri are also facing this shortage," said Hsiung, adding that the society has at least 30 experienced rattan weavers under its care, who compete in a local rattan-weaving competition every two years.

Meanwhile, he also said that since 1963, the society has grown and expanded its role to the community by providing training and services.

Besides rattan weaving, its clients have also been trained to provide massage and build wood cages for chicks to be sold to chicken farms.

Since 2006, the society has also been providing a series of training in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) fields at all their branches.

"Now our clients are able to use computers and make friends across the globe, some of them more skilful in using the computer than I am," he said in jest.

Other activities that the society is leading, he added, was awareness and prevention of blindness which besets the rural community which has little access to eye care.

He said the programme is also participated by specialist doctors who provide free eye-check as well as giving appointments and referrals to hospitals for serious cases.

"It is vital to detect eye problems especially in young children to prevent them from being partially or totally blind as they grow up," he added.

During the handing-over ceremony, the rattan bundles were handed over to the society by the Sarawak Forestry Department assistant director Hii Tow Peck who was representing director Sapuan Ahmad.

Popular TV personality Pak cik Jamal dies - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 07 May 2014 04:06 PM PDT

PUTRAJAYA: Veteran television personality Abdul Jamal Muhamad, who was synonymous with the name Pak Cik Jamal, died at Putrajaya Hospital here, yesterday.

Jamal, 75, left behind wife Zainab Serat, 67, and three children.

Putrajaya Hospital Director Datuk Dr Nora'i Mohd Said said in a statement yesterday that Jamal breathed his last at 11.08am at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He was confirmed as suffering from a heart attack and complications from lung infection, she said. His daughter, Shahila said her father died at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital at 11am, after being admitted on Tuesday for breathing difficulties.

Pak Cik Jamal had been admitted several times to the hospital, prior to this, for complications of the heart and lungs and spinal problems.

Jamal was a popular television personality with the character of a Speaker through the Mini Parliament programme produced by Radio Television Malaysia in the 1980s.

Shahila said her father's remains would be taken to the Jameatussolehah Mosque, Pekan Dengkil for funeral rites.

Jamal also suffered breathing problems claimed to be due to 'ankylosing spondylitis' which he suffered about 14 years ago resulting in his spinal column being bent and affected his lungs.

In early January, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek had visited Jamal, also known as 'Jamal Kerdil', in his house at Kampung Selangor Dredging, when he was ill.

During the visit, Ahmad Shabery had said that Jamal's contribution in the Malaysian broadcasting field was most valuable to the country because the programme, 'Mini Parlimen' had strongly influenced the thinking of children then.

Another programme which helped Jamal to become an icon among children was 'Taman Kanak-kanak' which was first broadcast in 1961 and he also produced the programmes 'Pesta Pop' and 'Pentas Aneka'. — Bernama

KUCHING: A pregnant woman suffered light injuries after she was allegedly attacked by the father of her unborn child and his ex-wife at a coffee shop at Mile 4 here yesterday.

The 27-year-old victim from Tabuan Dusun, who is seven months into her pregnancy, was having breakfast at a coffee shop when the pair showed up and started assaulting her until she fell to the ground.

According to her, she had been involved in a relationship with the man following his divorce over a year ago, and subsequently became pregnant.

However, the man recently informed her that he was ending their relationship as he and his wife had agreed to reconcile, and that he would not be taking responsibility for their baby.

She explained that she was having breakfast alone when the couple, who are also her co-workers at a shopping mall, arrived and began punching and kicking her without saying a word.

Following the unprovoked attack, the mother-to-be made her way to Sarawak General Hospital for a check-up before lodging a police report over the incident.
