Sarawak Street Arts Carnival comes to life at Kuching Waterfront ... Posted: 26 Apr 2014 11:58 AM PDT KUCHING: Sarawak Street Arts Carnival opened yesterday at the Square Tower in Kuching Waterfront where various local, regional and international artistes and acts gathered to promote understanding and appreciation of cultures. The two-day carnival was one of the four main events organised in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014 that aimed to attract more tourists to the state and give a boost to the tourism industry. Organised by state Ministry of Tourism and Culture in collaboration with state Culture and Arts Department, the carnival features live music, arts and crafts, food, dance, fashion show, clowns and many interesting programmes and activities. With hundreds of musicians, crafters, dancers and artistes, the Kuching Waterfront comes alive this weekend. Speaking at the launching, Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Haji Openg highlighted that art is a universal culture that can transcend boundaries of all kinds. "Together with our invited guests from other countries, this carnival can showcase our unique culture in the state of Sarawak especially where people of all races and beliefs can live in peace and harmony," he said. "It gives us the opportunity to interact with one another especially our foreign guests through arts like music, crafts and dances. Through interaction, they are able to understand the values and morals behind our unique culture," he added. With such uniqueness, Abang Johari emphasised the spirit of 1Malaysia is in Sarawak because Sarawakians place great emphasis in upholding and protecting this unity. "There are no religious or racial problems in Sarawak. Therefore, defend whatever that is good and distance ourselves from bad cultures," he said. "Therefore, Sarawak plays a significant role to show to others the goodness in our culture, promote understanding and appreciation for our culture," he added. In the pursuit for modernisation, Abang Johari reminded the people not to forget their roots that were the main fabric to build this nation. He also reiterated the importance of unity as a strength that will enable the state and nation to progress in one direction. "Unity is the wealth of this country and I am confident that this Street Art Carnival can send a message to the society that there is no other alternative for us but to understand each other and move forward together," he said. He hopes that invited artistes and foreign tourists can indulge and truly experience Sarawak's unique cultures through this Sarawak Street Arts Carnival. Among those present were permanent secretary to Tourism Ministry Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Rashid Khan, chief political secretary to the chief minister Abdullah Saidol and state Culture and Arts Department director Sallahuddin Salleh. |
Don't end up like Sabah, Sarawak told - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 27 Apr 2014 03:30 PM PDT KUCHING: Sarawakians should learn from the bitter experience of Sabah, which no longer has control of the state due to Umno's domination. State Reform Party (Star) Sabah chairman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said that unlike Sabah, Sarawakians still have the right to determine who controls the state. "The difference between Sabah and Sarawak now is you can still preserve control of your state," he said in his keynote address at the 'Forum: Malaysia Agreement 1963 – Past, Present & Future' held here yesterday. Jeffrey also expressed his admiration for former chief minister (now Yang di-Pertua Negeri) Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, whom he said had left a 'very powerful message' to Sarawakians prior to handing over his duties to his successor Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem. "In his message, he stressed for the people to safeguard Sarawak's interest in Malaysia and not allow Umno to come into the state. Now that is a very powerful message. Jeffrey noted that Sabah had since moved from being one of the most progressive states in the country to the very bottom of the ranking. "According to a study by the World Bank (WB) in Washington, Sabah is currently the poorest state in Malaysia and it is likely to stay that way for a considerable length of time given the current efforts in poverty eradication. "This is an irony because Sabah is actually a very rich state. We have oil and gas just like Sarawak although presently Sarawak is producing more at the moment." Organised by the Sarawak Association for People's Aspiration (Sapa) and Borneo Heritage Foundation of Sabah (BHF), the forum also saw Sabah Progressive Party president and former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee, PBDS Baru deputy president Patrick Uren as well as human rights lawyer and activist Waythamoorthy Ponnusamy among the speakers. Earlier at a press conference, Jeffrey, who is also BHF president, explained that the forum was organised with the aim of providing an atmosphere of open and sincere discussions. "There should be no fear because if we were not allowed to discuss our views on the Malaysia Agreement, then we will never be able to resolve whatever disagreement we have," he stressed, and proposed for Sarawak to work with Sabah in addressing the matter. "Now we are out of tune, because Sarawak is controlled by the state's political party, where even though they are in Barisan Nasional (BN), they can still make a stand on state matters compared to Sabah which is run by Umno and even the chief minister is appointed by Umno." Also present at the event was Sapa president Lina Soo. |

Vocational college students visit Menara Sarawak Energy ... Posted: 18 Apr 2014 12:12 PM PDT KUCHING: A group of students from Kuching Vocational College had an insightful visit to Menara Sarawak Energy as part of the college's exposure programme to the industry. Some 30 of them majoring in electrical studies visited the headquarters at Isthmus on Monday to learn about Sarawak Energy's core business activities, its role in developing Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) and internship opportunities at the company. Led by the college's academic deputy director Lim Ah Juan, the students were given a briefing on the headquarters itself for being the first green building in East Malaysia. They then toured the Sarawak Energy Museum where they were told about the company's proud history of more than 70 years. The students were also inquisitive over hydro generation activities particularly on Murum and Batang Ai. They were later brought on a site visit to Muara Tabuan 132 KV substation where its senior technician Ganesh Maniam and operations engineer Laja Supit briefed the students on what goes on in a substation. Earlier on, Lim said this was the first time the college had organised a visit to Sarawak Energy and hoped it would foster good ties between the college and the company. "The students who are here today are the pioneering batch ever since the school was elevated to a vocational college status in line with the national transformation programme for vocational and technical education," he said. He added with Sarawak Energy being the state's own energy provider, it was certainly an ideal place to train the students in preparing them to meet the industry's expectations. "These students will graduate in 2016 so until then, we will want to make sure there is a match between what is being taught to our students and what is required by the industry to ensure employability," he said. Sarawak Energy sees human capital development as a crucial part in the state's growth particularly, for the much needed skilled workforce for SCORE. As such, the company is committed to supporting human capital development in Sarawak and makes it a point to take in 200 industrial trainees annually. |
