Formula One: Rosberg wins Monaco Grand Prix

Posted: 25 May 2014 12:30 PM PDT

MONTE CARLO, Monaco: Nico Rosberg turned his controversial pole position into faultless victory for Mercedes on Sunday when he regained the lead in the drivers' world championship by winning the Monaco Grand Prix.

The 28-year-old German came home 9.2 seconds clear of nearest rival and team-mate Lewis Hamilton who coped with loss of vision in one eye as he held off Australian Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull in the closing laps.

It was Rosberg's second consecutive victory in his home event, his second win of the 2014 season and the fifth win of his career.

Fernando Alonso finished fourth for Ferrari ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Force India and Jenson Button who finished sixth for McLaren.

Felipe Massa came home seventh for Williams, Jules Bianchi was eighth for Marussia ahead of fellow-Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus and Dane Kevin Magnussen finished 10th in the second McLaren.

"Wahooooo! Thank-you everyone," screamed a relieved Rosberg at the end of the 78-lap race. "This car is really amazing."

Rosberg's win carried him to 122 points in the title race ahead of Hamilton, who was only half a second ahead of Ricciardo as they crossed the line, on 118.

He added: "It's a very special day, pressure on all way, I kept it cool."- AFP

Japan shatters Malaysia’s hopes

Posted: 25 May 2014 12:13 PM PDT

NEW DELHI: Malaysia's hopes of bringing home the Thomas Cup after a 22-year wait were shattered when Japan edged Malaysia 3-2 in the final at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium here yesterday.

This is the first time Japan entered the final of the prestigious badminton tournament.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei, the world number one men's singles player, thrashed his opponent Kenichi Tago 21-12, 12-16 in the opening match to put Malaysia ahead.

Malaysia's first doubles, Tan Boon Heong/Hoon Thien How, however, lost to Kenichi Hayakama/Hiroyuki Endo 21-12, 17-21, 19-21 bringing the tie to 1-1.

Second singles Chong Wei Feng was brushed aside by Kento Momota 21-15,21-17 giving Japan the lead.

Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong came to the rescue when they won against Keigo Sonoda/Takeshi Kamura  19-21, 21-17, 21-12 causing the tie to be decided by the last singles.

Liew Daren put up a tremendous fight against Takuma Ueda in the decider but went down in 12-21, 21-18, 17-21. Chong Wei said winning the first point for the team and country was important.

"My second set was tough. He (Tago) was leading 15-10. I didn't give up and chased him point by point until I was leading at 17-15 and then went  all the way.

"This is my first Thomas Cup final and being the first singles, I wanted to win the first point so that there will be less pressure on the first doubles and second singles," he told reporters afterwards.

A disappointed Wei Feng, who had won all his previous matches in the tournament said it was a "pressure-cooker" atmosphere.

"I was not able to play at my own pace today. He was able to break my game play from the beginning and my defence also slipped. In terms of tactics, I lost," he said. —  Bernama

State cyclists try out BMX event

Posted: 25 May 2014 11:39 AM PDT

KANGAR: State cycling coach Dzulkaflee Hassan is hoping that the two Sarawak cyclists benefit from competing at the BMX event even if it was just held for exhibition for Sukma XVII.

Male rider Mahathir Norseman and female teammate Noor Fadilah Saedin competed at Batu Pahat, Perlis yesterday but did win anything.

Both had been tasked by Dzulkaflee to tackle the event although they actually specialise in road and mountain bike events.

"It was a wonderful experience for them to try something new as both riders are not really experts in the BMX event," said Dzulkaflee.

Their training for the event was also hampered by the late arrival of their BMX bicycles.

"We only trained a few weeks for this. They were not used to the BMX tracks here too," he added.

Meanwhile, Sabah could only wish that the two gold medals offered in the event were counted in the official Sukma XVII medal tally as the Sabahan duo Akmal Abdullah and Natahsya Soon won.

The Sarawak cycling team will `officially' kick off their Sukma challenge today with the 24Km Cross Country Mountain Bike (MTB) event for men and women. The event will take place at the Pauh Putra, Ulu Pauh in Perlis.

Sukma canoeists compete with eye on 2016

Posted: 25 May 2014 11:39 AM PDT

KANGAR: Sarawak Sukma canoeing manager Tedong Bugak is hoping that his team show some promise even if they finish empty-handed Sukma XVII.

That, according to him, is vital as they prepare for the 2016 Sukma 2016 to be hosted by Sarawak.

"This year's Sukma is an important platform for us to test our mantle against teams from the other states. They are relatively new but I hope that they are ready in two years' time," he explained.

The Sukma canoeing races on Saturday were for the 1000m distance event.

The 5000m distance races start on Sunday.

On Saturday, Vivien Rekan only managed a fourth place in the K1 (Single paddler) 1000m final race.

Sarawak have sent a total of 20 canoeists (10 men and 10 women) for this year's Sukma.

Timah Tasoh lake is the venue for the Sukma canoeing competition.

KANGAR: Sarawak karatekas ended their Sukma XVII campaign yesterday winning one silver and one bronze medal at the Sri Kayangan Hall of the Perlis Matriculation College.

They surpassed their modest pre-games target of two bronze medals.

It was the women's team which made it to the final yesterday in the kata team event while the men did not qualify beyond the initial stages of the same event.

On Saturday, Kaartic Chiramjeevi had won a bronze in the men's kumite 55kg event to bag the state's first medal in this year's Sukma.

Sisters Nurjannah Tuwah and Nadzirah Tuwah with Dayangku Nurdiyana Awangku Tangah made up Sarawak's kata team which clinched the silver yesterday. The gold went to Penang's team of Celine Lee, Khaw Yee Voon and Zoey Wong.

Speaking to The Borneo Post yesterday, Nurdiyana was satisfied with her team's performance.

"As for me it, we lost to the better team. I must admit that we need to go for more exposure before competing if we want to match Penang's prowess and win the karate-do gold medal in the next Sukma," she said.

The bronze went to Sabah.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also Sarawak's assistant chef-de-mission, was present at the venue to cheer for the Sarawak athletes.

Sarawak competed in the Sukma karate-do event for the first time two years ago in Pahang when they collected three bronzes.

Penang sweep both men’s and women’s Kata team gold

Posted: 25 May 2014 11:36 AM PDT

ARAU: Penang's Kata exponent, Ivan Oh, the youngest member of his team at 17, was both happy and proud to have helped the team win the men's Kata Team gold in the SUKMA at Kolej Matrikulasi Perlis, here today.

Penang beat host team Perlis for the gold while Sabah and Melaka were awarded bronze medals as losing semifinalists.

Oh, 17, who joined the National back up squad two years ago, said it was a tall order to perform on par with experienced team mates Thomson Hoe and Joshua Wong.

"This is my first SUKMA and I will have to work extremely hard to be on par with the seniors…however, both Hoe and Wong provided a lot of guidance," he told reporters after his match.

Oh who took up the sport when in Primary school, said the Kata event was his favourite event in karate-do since the exponents have the power to showcase their performance.

Penang also took the gold in the women's Kata Team through Celine Lee, Khaw Yee Voon and Zoey Wong after beating Sarawak while Johor and Federal Territories were awarded bronze medals. — Bernama
