Khatam Al-Quran to mark RBAF 53rd anniversary

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) will celebrate its 53rd anniversary today. A number of events have been arranged in glorifying the celebration. Last night, a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony was held at the Surau of the Ministry of Defence in Bolkiah Garrison, Brudirect reported.

Present was the Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa Hj Sirat. Also present was the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Seri Pahlawan Md Tawih Abdullah.

The Khatam Al-Quran ceremony marked the end of fifty three times reading of Al-Quran by officers and personnel of RBAF.

This year's Khatam Al-Quran ceremony gathered Al-Quran readers from RBAF units of the Ministry of Defence, Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF), Royal Brunei Navy (RBN), Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF), RBAF Training Institute, RBAF Defence Academy and Special Forces Regiment.

The ceremony was intended to give encouragement to RBAF's officers and personnel to read the Quran and inject spiritual elements to officers and members in carrying their task entrusted with great responsibility.

Monarch bids last farewell to late Sultan of Perak

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam today consented to attend the Istiadat Ziarah Penghormatan Terakhir Al-Marhum Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahulah, the 34th Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia, Brudirect reported.

Shortly after arrival at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar, Perak Darul Ridzuan, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to sign the Condolence Book. The monarch then consented to attend the Istiadat Ziarah Penghormatan Terakhir (Ceremonial Last Tribute) to extend last respects to the late Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, at the Balairong Seri, Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar.

Also present with His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien. Accompanying His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was the Minister of Finance (II) at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abd Rahman Hj Ibrahim.

Al-Marhum was laid to rest at the Bukit Chandan Mausoleum in Kuala Kangsar. Al-Marhum who was eighty six, is survived by the Raja Permaisuri Perak Darul Ridzuan, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun binti Mohamad Ali; a son, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Dr. Nazrin Shah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan; and three daughters, Yang Amat Mulia Raja Dato' Seri Azureen binti Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah; Yang Amat Mulia Raja Eleena binti Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah; and Yang Amat Mulia Raja Yong Sofia binti Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah. Al-Marhum Baginda was formerly installed as the 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia on the July 1 1983 when he was serving as the Chief Justice of Malaysia.

On February 3 1984, the late Sultan Azlan Shah resigned as Chief Justice of Malaysia and became the Sultan of Perak following the death of Sultan Idris Shah and was proclaimed as the 34th Sultan of Perak.

On December 9 1985, the late Sultan Azlan Shah was officially crowned as Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan.

The late Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan studied at Government English School, Batu Gajah now known as Sultan Yussuf Secondary School and pursued his studies in Law at University of Nottingham, UK and obtained a Bachelor of Law in 1953.

On November 23 1954, the late Sultan Azlan Shah was a certified member of the English Bar by The Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn.

Media conference clarifies new labour policy concerning foreign workers

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Following the recent announcement on several policies of the Labour Department for recruitment of foreign workers by the Minister of Home Affairs, the Ministry has provided further clarification on the new polices, Brudirect reported.

Implementation of the new policies will be made in stages commencing on June 30. The policies encompass freezing of jobs; withdrawal of unused quotas; reduction of quota licences when renewing licences; limiting the number of new licences for conventional restaurants and the policy on Levy.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abd Majid Mangarshah, then clarified on the policies during a Media Conference yesterday.

Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abd Majid said that the policies announced by the Minister of Home Affairs are first; to freeze issuance of work permit or licence for recruitment of foreign workers to business sectors that do not need foreign workers; secondly, reducing the number of work permit or licences for recruitment of foreign workers when the time for renewal of permit or licence comes; thirdly, limiting issuance of new miscellaneous licences and other branch-out licences except for businesses hiring local citizens; the fourth is limiting new licences for conventional restaurants such as coffee shops and such eateries; the fifth – is not issuing business licences for village residential areas unless they are run fully by locals; and the sixth is pertaining to levy for recruiting foreign workers.

At the same Media Conference, the Acting Commissioner of Labour, Hj Rani Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Md Yusof explained the policy concerning the Levy for recruitment of foreign labour. He said that levy will be imposed on ninety posts in five sectors already designated to be imposes levy.

There are sixteen posts in the wholesale and retail business sector; twenty eight posts in the transportation sector; thirty four in Hotel and restaurants; eight posts in the Support Services; and four in the ICT Sector, all together ninety posts.
