MCA Penampang to issue statement on community leaders’ service termination

Posted: 12 May 2014 10:36 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: MCA Penampang will be issuing a statement in response to the termination of four Kapitan Cina from the Kepayan constituency.

Its divisional chief, Datuk Paul Kong, said this when asked to comment on the complaint raised by the Kapitan Cina or Chinese community leaders concerned.

Kong was also asked if MCA Penampang would assist the four community leaders who were seeking an explanation from the relevant authorities on their termination.

Those terminated were Chong Chiew Kiong (Kepayan Rumah Murah), Yong Ah Loi (Nosoob),and Kwong Leong Ping (Lido). It was learnt that the Kapitan for Kepayan Ridge, Wong Yun Thiam, also received the termination letter.

On Sunday, Chong, Yong and Kwong held a press conference to highlight their plight, claiming that their appointment was endorsed by MCA, which had represented the Kepayan constituency prior to the 13th General Election, when it lost the seat to DAP.

According to Chong, they received a letter each from the Local Government and Housing Ministry informing them that their services would expire by May 31.

"We feel sad because our services are no longer required and it is worse because the termination was done in such an abrupt manner with no reasons given," he said, and urged the ministry concerned to explain why their services had been terminated.

He said it was necessary because they did not want the community in Kepayan to have misunderstanding.

Chong said they would be forwarding a copy of the termination letter to the Chief Minister, the Penampang BN chairman, Penampang District Chief, and also to Sabah MCA liaison chief for further action.

He also clarified that their sacking was not the result of the recent statement by MCA National Youth chief Chong Sin Woon who was of the opinion that the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) should be shut down because of the spate of abduction cases.

In fact, they believe it is an act of political revenge by a member of the Penampang MCA, and Chong claimed that prior to and during the previous general election, they were pressured by the person not to assist, especially in campaigning for the Kepayan BN candidate.

But instead of complying with the person's 'directive', all three of the Kapitans decided to campaign for all BN candidates in Penampang, including for the Kepayan candidate although the candidate subsequently lost in the election.

33 housebreaking, robbery cases in Sandakan solved

Posted: 12 May 2014 10:35 AM PDT

SANDAAKAN: Police believe they have solved 33 housebreaking and robbery cases in the district with the arrest of six suspects, including three former convicts.

District police chief ACP Rowell Marong said yesterday that all the suspects, aged between 20 and 40 years old, were tested positive for drugs.

One of the suspects had allegedly committed 18 housebreaking cases while another was suspected to have been involved in 15 burglary cases, he said, adding all of them would be investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

Another suspect aged 36 was detained for impersonating as a policeman and an immigration officer and involvement in several robbery cases around Sandakan district.

"The suspect allegedly impersonating as a policeman and an immigration officer was reported to have collected money from business operators around this district. He would be investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code," said Rowell.

The police have also seized a Toyota Hilux vehicle, sling bags and a debtors' record book from the suspect, who is also on the wanted list of the Lahad Datu police.

With the arrest of these suspects, police recovered several stolen items, namely, a television set, six mobile phones, two pen-drives, two modems, three wristwatches, a wallet, two memory cards, three laptops, two passports, two sling bags and a gold pawn card.

Rowell hoped with the arrest of the suspects, housebreaking and robbery cases in housing areas would be reduced.

He called for the continued cooperation of the public to help the police reduce crime rate.

Rowell also showed reporters the RM50,250 cash and 21 barrels of petrol that were seized from intruders at Berhala Island recently.

SUCCC won’t pursue mistakes made in projects

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) executive committee has resolved not to pursue the mistakes made in the agriculture and reforestation joint venture (JV) projects carried out by Corak Nakhoda Sdn Bhd and Anika Desiran Sdn Bhd any further.

Instead, SUCCC, as a team, will pursue its rightful interests as stated in the agreements through legal channels.

SUCCC president Datuk Seri Panglima Gan Sau Wah said this when explaining the JV projects to the executive and supervisory committee members in a meeting on Sunday.

Gan, accompanied by SUCCC secretary general Datuk Ling Tiong Chai and legal advisor George Ngui, has met with Veetar Kinabalu Plantations Sdn Bhd chairman Dato' Lim Kim Yeow @ Lim Ba Chong, the company that provided the finance and management for both JV projects.

During the meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Gan has requested Lim to increase SUCCC's Ordinary Shares in Corak Nakhoda, which would enable the united chamber to receive better returns.

However, SUCCC received an outright refusal on the request and was told that their interests would be based on the JV agreement, Gan said.

At present, SUCCC has only four Ordinary Shares and two million Preference Shares in Corak Nakhoda.

Gan and his delegates received similar response when they met with the lawyer representing Anika Desiran, who also refused their request for better returns.

"Despite the unfavorable conditions in the agreements, SUCCC had signed the contracts and therefore, what the united chamber could do at this point is to engage lawyers to study the agreements and determine whether the other party has fulfilled his part of the agreements.

"Hopefully we can pursue a little of our rightful interests by this method," Gan said.

On the other hand, Gan said certain quarters should not expect him to solve this complicated JV issue in two years since he took over as SUCCC president in 2012.

Gan said the JV issue had been long-standing for 18 years and was 'beyond cure', adding that he should not be blamed for the JV as he was not the president of SUCCC at the time when the agreements were signed.

Build toilets at safe locations – Jainab

Posted: 12 May 2014 10:32 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid has urged developers in the state to build properties with toilets at a safer location.

"Of course we want our toilets to be clean, but the most important thing now is that developers should consider putting toilets at a safer place, especially women's toilets, to avoid any rape cases," she said when launching Mother's Day Walk Abreast at Likas Bay on Sunday.

"Most premises in the state, especially shopping malls and petrol stations, build their toilets at the back, where not many people can see. I think this should be changed for the safety of women," she said.

Meanwhile, Jainab stressed that parents should not leave their kids alone when they go to the toilets to avoid any kidnappings.
