Stand up for Our rights! |
Posted: 01 May 2014 03:21 AM PDT Today, May 1st is Labour Day. RFS interviews Julius Choo, member of PSM (The Socialist Party of Malaysia), a party which champions social and labor rights. He is attending the May 1 Anti-GST rally and he tells RFS that, despite Sarawak's higher cost of living, the minimum wage in the state is set at only RM800 compared to RM900 in Peninsular! WHY? Plus the implementation of GST. We examine how it is the poor and lower income group that will suffer MOST from this new tax. And, we ask what does development mean, given the Penan villagers in Murum have been moved to government resettlement areas with no basic facilities? Senang Kallang from Metalun Murum tells RFS how the government promised to provide a school and a clinic when they moved in on September 2013, but it is all still in the 'planning stages.! Lastly, our veteran commentator, Christina Suntai highlights a report that identifies the Sarawak crony logging company WTK as one of the main land-grabbing companies illegally destroying the rain forests of Papua New Guinea and stealing the lands and livelihoods of the native people. She explains how this is just one example of how deforestation by Taib's relatives and cronies has now become a world's problem. Stay Tuned. |
