Don’t Politicize Education

Posted: 16 May 2014 05:57 AM PDT

Today is Teachers' Day in Malaysia; RFS interviews a teacher about the hot political issue of students in Sarawak who are allegedly being used by an unidentified Muslim group to preach to Christians on Islam. She claims the drive is being backed by the Ministry of Education, which has an agenda to bring in Islamic teachers to Sarawak.  Her message is that education is important and it is not right to politicize education.

And, are human rights a threat to Islam as the Prime Minister today alleged, causing astonishment to NGOs and opposition leaders? Yins Shao Loong, Research Director of the INSTITUT RAKYAT, says Malaysia might have to leave the UN because of Prime Minister Najib Razak's attack on what he dubs as "human rightism [sic]" and claims is a "new religion".

Lastly, RFS received a call from headman Stephen in Sibu. He urges the Dayak minister Tan Sri William Mawan to be sincere in paying close attention on Dayak Issue – he says let actions speak louder than words!

TR.

Transparency is the way forward!

13 Opposition lawmakers led by DAP Chairman YB Chong Chieng Jen met with Chief Minister Adenan Satem at the State Legislative Assembly building yesterday. YB Chong Chieng Jen tells RFS that both sides have reached a consensus to safeguard the rights of Sarawak as enshrined in the Malaysia agreement. He tells us his hopes for a more open, liberal and transparent Government post-Taib Mahmud.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau recently announced that the number of IC complaints in Penan communities have decreased. We speak to NGO representative Mujan Jok who strongly refutes Ngau's statement saying Penan are still regularly disqualified.

And we speak to RFS' own commentator Christina Suntai who analyses the political situation in West Malaysia. Just what is going on in Terengganu!? All this and more on today's episode of RFS!

No more Dams!

Posted: 14 May 2014 04:11 AM PDT

NCR lawyer, Abun Sui speaks to RFS on the latest developments of the proposed Baleh hydro-electric dam. Compensation forms are being distributed in the area but as per usual the community are in the dark  about the project. Abun Sui urges the affected communities to be brave in standing up for their rights and to protest its implementation.

We speak to Jok Jau Evong from Sahabat Alam Malaysia (Friends of the Earth Malaysia) who urge the Malaysian Government to stop the Baram hydro-electric dam project.

And we speak to Sigau Enri from SAVE Rivers on their delegation to Europe. He tells us that Peter Kallang and others are highlighting their plight to companies involved in SCORE in Switzerland and Norway. Stay tuned!

Sarawak’s Electricity Supply Is ‘Reliable’?

Posted: 13 May 2014 04:21 AM PDT

Sibu MP Oscar Ling does not agree with today's statement that the performance of Sarawak's electricity supply is reliable. What about the rural areas, he questions? He tells RFS that DAP Sarawak is proceeding with its signature campaign to pressure Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to reduce electricity tariffs, despite a lengthy statement by the company in defence of its current rates and their petition has now exceeded its  target of 100,000 signatures.

Also, how well managed is the data collection for the so-called 'E-Kasih' program, which is used to measure poverty levels and decide who is eligible for social support?  RFS speaks to one caller, Indai Igat from Kanowit, who complains that she applied 3 times for 'E-Kasih', but failed even though she was qualified.

And we return to the on-going Baram Dam issue with our presenter Stanley Rentap, who has been reporting from the ground. He speaks to on 'Uncle Ucat' from the local community, who says he would prefer a government-built road and a school in Baram, rather than a dam to flood all the villages out!

Lastly, our veteran commentator, Christina Suntai, takes us over to the United States to investigate allegations of corruption involving high level Malaysians in that country. A Los Angeles law firm is suing Riza Aziz, the stepson of Najib Tun Razak, who is alleged to be using embezzled or misappropriated funds from a foreign nation – apparently Malaysia, to fund and finance the film production company Red Granite, which made the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street.

Want to know more? Stay tuned!

Tr.

Let’s make success happen!
