KUCHING: Tan Sri William Mawan and Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh led eight other state Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers to quit their respective parties to join Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras). Among the members are four from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) namely Datuk Peter Nansian, Datuk Sylvester Entri, Paulus Palu Gumbang, Rosey Yunus and Baram MP Anyi Ngau.

Mawan said the door was still open to other interested representatives including Anthony Nogeh and Wong Judat. He stressed, however, there was no room for SPDP deputy president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Mawan surprised the room when he announced Teras was also working to accommodate three Parti Keadilan Rakyat representatives if they were interested in joining the political entity.

From Sarawak United Peoples Party, Soon Koh is joined by Dr Johnical Rayong, Dr Jerip Susil and Ranum Mina.

A surprise inclusion is Pelagus assemblyman George Lagong of Sarawak Workers Party (SWP).

Nansian mentioned that Teras would soon submit its application to join BN. The party will also start working on its new protem committee lineup.

With this new lineup, Teras has two ministers and four assistant ministers.

'Impian Sarawak' fulfilling where requests fall on deaf ears — MP ...

Posted: 10 May 2014 11:25 AM PDT

SIBU: Sibu MP Oscar Ling said nobody should belittle the purpose of 'Impian Sarawak' aimed at going rural to serve the rural folk.

He said implementing projects and the basic infrastructure was the responsibilities of the government of the day.

"But if the government continue to ignore the requests of the people and failed to deliver, then we will have to step in and implement the projects so that the rural people will also enjoy a better life," he said at the press conference yesterday.

Ling was referring to the recent statement made by Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh that `Impian Sarawak' was only a DAP political propaganda.

Wong also mentioned that only one project had been implemented in Rassau, Bawang Assan under 'Impian Sarawak', hence serving no real purpose.

Ling said Wong should not forget that implementing projects to benefit the rural people was the duty and responsibilities of the government.

He said the rural folks had requested lots of project but few were carried out.

"For instance, the project Impian Sarawak carried out in Rassau was a request from the people for many years but the government could not deliver. Since they did not do, then we will do."

Ling also challenged Wong to implement another project in Tutus, also in Bawang Assan, which the people had requested for a long time.

He said the rural folks in the nine longhouses in Tutus had requested for proper lighting along the 900m plank walk that connected their longhouses and also a primary school.

Ling said it was pitch dark at night and pupils walking along the plank walk faced the danger of falling into the Igan River below the plank walk.

He said the residents had requested for proper lightings for the plank walk for a long time, but the government was not doing anything to solve their plights.

'If the government continues to ignore the needs of the people in Tutus, then we will also go in to install all the necessary lightings along the plank walk," he said.

Go Bald satellite shave at Curtin Sarawak a success – BorneoPost ...

Posted: 14 May 2014 12:06 PM PDT

MIRI: The second satellite shave at Curtin University Sarawak (Curtin Sarawak) yesterday, in support of the Sarawak Children's Cancer Society (SCCS) Go Bald 6.0 campaign, was a great success.

Seventy students and staff compared to only 53 last year took part in the campaign.

"At Curtin Sarawak, we believe in supporting our community in any way we can, taking into consideration the interest of the community, and adopting an intensely hands-on philosophy when it comes to community engagement. We believe that donations of time, facilities and services are just as important as writing cheques," said the university's corporation communications manager Nicholas Leong at the launch yesterday.

Among those present were SCCS secretary and outstation liaison officer (northern zone) Jocelyn Hee and other staff of Curtin Sarawak.

Leong assured that Curtin Sarawak will continue to support the Go bald campaign as long as it continues.

Meanwhile, several participants interviewed said the campaign encouraged them to care more about the less fortunate including children cancer patients.

"Going bald is not weird for me. This is my fourth times joining this charitable campaign and so far I managed to raise over RM700 and hope to raise more by May 25," said Curtin Sarawak corporate communications officer Ling Yii Yang.

Sabahan mass communication student Reine Beryl when interviewed said "I have no regret shaving my hair for charity. It is a pleasure to help whenever we can and we will organise another project for SCCS in August this year."

Another Sabahan, chemical engineering student Wong Gin Wai who raised RM300 said "This campaign is great in helping me to be more charitable."

Bradly Endes, one of the four staff of Curtin Sarawak's Students Services Department participating, said, "I feel honoured to help to increase awareness of childhood cancer and provide an avenue for the public to contribute to the well-being of child cancer sufferers."

Hee meanwhile, appealed for continued public support for all their projects.

"Those in Miri who are not able to come for today's satellite shave can come for the main Go Bald event at Bintang Megamall on May 25 or to the ParkCity Mall in Bintulu (May 18)," she said.

Those who want to contribute can donate directly to SCCS, raise funds by pledging to go bald, pick up the Go Bald pledge cards to solicit for funds for SCCS. The cards are available at the Somerset Hotel here.

For further details, contact Hee at 609-8841161 or visit www.gobald.my.

SCCS aims to raise RM1.5 million through the Go Bald event this year for its various projects such as providing food and accommodation at SCCS centre for patients seeking treatment at SarawakGeneral Hospital, and to set up a transit home here to cater to outstation patients and their families.

Yeo favourite in Sarawak Closed title - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 15 May 2014 10:33 AM PDT

by Philip Wong, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on May 16, 2014, Friday

SIBU: Former state champion Mark Yeo will be the star attraction at the Sarawak Closed Central Region Snooker Championship to be held at Sibu Cueball International Centre from June 15 to 22.

The finalist in the 2013 Selangor Invitational Open Championship has set his sight on the prestigious title, saying: "I have been training regularly in the past months."

Other favorites include Pau Chiong King, Ng Hong Man, Joe Ting, Sim Hong Hui (all from Sibu) and dark horse Yii Hong Kai from Sarikei.

Event organising chairman Danny Wong said they were among the 49 players who had confirmed their participation.

"We are looking at getting about 60 players," he told a press conference yesterday in the presence of Sarawak Billiards & Snooker Sports Federation (SBSSF) vice chairman Simon Ling.

Wong said any player who has been residing in the central region for the past six months was eligible for participation.

He said the top four winners of each zone would represent the state in the 2015 Asian Invitational Championship in Kuala Lumpur.

"All the expenses for the players will be borne by the organiser. This is a big bonus for the top 16 players from the three zones."

He explained this was to give the top players from the three zones a chance to experience top level competitions in the nation.

"Instead of staging the grand final for the winners from the three zones, we had decided to send all the top 12 players to Kuala Lumpur for them to gain exposure and experience."

Wong said players from areas like Sarikei, Meradong, Kanowit, Selangau, Mukah, Dalat, Oya, Balingian, Belaga were for the central zone.

Of the 49 players who had registered, he said Sibu players accounted for the bulk.

Sibu Cueball International are sending 16 representatives, Executive 3 Snooker Centre will send 11 players, First Class Snooker Centre have 10, Centre Point Snooker Centre have six players, Sibu Division Billiards & Snooker Association and Lucky Snooker Centre have four each.

Other players include two each from Sarikei, Kapit, Mukah and one each from Betong, Saratok, Meradong.

The winner will get RM1,500 and the first runner-up will get RM800.

The semi-finalists will each get RM400 and the quarter-finalists will each get RM100.

The player achieving the highest break with a minimum of 70 points will get RM500.

For the Sibu zone, those interested to take part should contact Danny Wong at 016-8629978 or email to dannywong@yahoo.com or contact Simon at 012-8809725.

Entry fee is RM30 per person and the closing date is May 31.

Postgraduate research colloquium a success – BorneoPost Online ...

Posted: 10 May 2014 11:12 AM PDT

MIRI: An inaugural postgraduate research colloquium held recently for 70 participants had successfully encouraged an advancing corporate research culture through cross-fertilisation of ideas in various disciplines in engineering and business.

The one-day colloquium also held promoting networking opportunities among higher degree research students.

It was organised by Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) and Universiti Sarawak Malaysia (Unimas) at the Curtin Sarawak campus.

The colloquium was a result of a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding signed between Curtin Sarawak and Unimas in December last year to develop and promote academic links and research collaboration.

Curtin Sarawak's associate dean of research and training and chair of the university's Graduate Studies Committee, Professor Marcus Man Kon Lee, hoped that both institutions will continue to work together to organise similar events in the future.

With a current enrolment of almost 70 postgraduate research students in its Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes, Curtin Sarawak has significantly developed its higher degree research programmes in the past few years and is well on its way to fulfilling its ambition of becoming a research-focused university.
