Heavy items must not be placed on roof of express boats – SRB controller Posted: 28 May 2014 12:48 PM PDT SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) does not permit placing of heavy items on the roof of express boats. According to SRB controller William Jinep, they had made this clear to operators. "We do not allow heavy items such as construction materials like steel bars to be placed on top of the boat. "However, small items like mattresses do not affect the buoyancy of the boat. "During the festive celebration, naturally people would be buying things home for the celebration." William was asked to respond to Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee's statement that placing too many items on top of express boats might affect their buoyancy. "If the boat does not slow down when turning, it might overturn," Sim had said. He also said SRB should impress on skippers the importance of slowing down when making a turn. Asked on limiting the number of goods on the roof, Sim said the onus was on the operators as they were the ones who should be familiar with the buoyancy and stability of their vessels. On the safety measures in place at Sibu Express Boat Terminal, he said the authorities were doing a good job. "The express boat operators are doing their part by not taking in excess passengers," he noted. SRB chairman Murni Suhaili said they had the necessary measures in place to safeguard passengers and those at the terminal. "The 'No Ticket No Entry' policy has been strictly enforced to prevent overloading," he said, adding that they had stepped up enforcement along the major rivers. Murni was making a spot check at the terminal yesterday. Meanwhile, SRB assistant enforcement officer Jerry Lenggir said 43 enforcement officers were stationed at the terminal since May 24. Jerry added that they also had enforcement officers in the upper reaches of the Rajang River. This, he said, was to prevent any untoward incident like what happened last year. Meanwhile, 3,556 passengers passed through the terminal on Monday, out of which 1,665 were arrivals and 1,891 departures. |
SRB beefs up enforcement at 38 locations Posted: 28 May 2014 12:47 PM PDT by Peter Boon, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on May 29, 2014, Thursday SIBU: The Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) is carrying out enforcement operations in 38 locations statewide, including mounting river blocks to curb overloading. SRB controller William Jinep told The Borneo Post yesterday that the locations included express boat terminals and all major rivers. "In Kapit, we have river blocks and also between Song and Sibu. Other areas where river blocks have been mounted include along the way to Daro, between Song and Kapit, Baleh and Belaga. "We are assisted by marine police (Marine Operations Force) and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). And Bintulu, Marudi and Baram are reporting heavy volume of passengers but the situation is under control," he said. William said the first phase of the operations began last Saturday and will end on Gawai Eve, while the second phase will run from June 7-12. He said enforcement personnel have been stationed in Belaga, Nanga Peraran, Pelagus, Nanga Gaat, Baleh and all the way up to Bakun. Meanwhile, he said SRB had approved temporary permits for additional express boat services for the Sibu-Kapit, Kapit-Belaga, and Kapit-Baleh routes. "Our officers are authorised to approve additional trips and permits on the spot," he said. He noted that the Sibu Express Boat Terminal is the busiest in Sarawak, followed by the one in Kapit. William added SRB is also monitoring express boat fares, with no hikes detected so far. |
Technical glitch forces express boat to return to Sibu Posted: 28 May 2014 12:46 PM PDT SIBU: A Song-bound express boat carrying 95 passengers returned to Sibu Express Boat Terminal minutes after departure at 10am when its skipper suspected a leak. The boat is now berthed at the terminal for Marine Department personnel to investigate and to determine its sea-worthiness. It is understood that the boat was near Lanang bridge when the skipper discovered technical problems. SRB controller William Jinep praised the skipper for placing the safety of passengers above all. On claims that there was another incident involving an express boat at Song wharf, Jinep said it was nothing more than passengers eager to leave the boat when the boat was berthing. He said the boat, with a capacity of 112 passengers, had since left Song for Sibu at 1pm. He reminded passengers not to rush, but disembark from the boat in an orderly manner to avoid a chaotic situation. On the 'No Ticket No Entry' policy, Jinep said it had been effective in curbing overloading. The measure had been very well received by boat operators and passengers, he added.
