Woman leaps to death from 6th floor carpark

Posted: 09 May 2014 09:15 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: A woman leapt to her death from a shopping complex here just hours after she allegedly put up a 'suicide note' on her Facebook account.

The body of Hasrina Chee, 21 from Kampung Sumbiling, Bongawan, was found with severe head and body injuries on a sidewalk after she jumped to her death from a six-storey building car park at Centre Point Shopping Complex, here around 11.30pm on Thursday.

It was said that the victim jumped to her death due to a failed relationship.

According to an eyewitness, who only wanted to be identified as Najib, 20, said he was shocked when he saw the victim jump from the sixth floor car park of the shopping complex.

"I saw her jump from the building and land on the pavement of the sidewalk.

"I immediately stopped my car to see what happened and saw a woman lying lifelessly in a pool of blood on the pavement.

"I'm still shaken by what had just happened as this is the first time I witnessed such an incident," he said when met at the scene on Thursday night.

Najib said that several security guards immediately ran out from the shopping complex to see what happened and called the police.

Meanwhile, City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said police have dismissed any foul play involved in the incident and have classified the case as suicide.

"She died instantly due to severe head and body injuries.

"The victim's body has also been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem," he said in a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

Commenting on whether the victim had a failed relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Jauteh said police are still investigating the case from all angles.

"Actually, the ex-boyfriend, in his 20s, had lodged a police report several days ago, claiming that the victim had threatened to take her own life after their relationship did not work out.

"The ex-boyfriend also stated in his police report that their relationship is over and that he has no other connection with the victim anymore," said Jauteh, adding that police have taken down statements from the ex-boyfriend, family and friends of the victim to assist in their investigation.

Asked if the victim had allegedly posted a 'suicide note' on her Facebook account prior to her death, Jauteh said police are still verifying the case.

"It is still too early to tell who wrote the statement in the victim's Facebook.

"The public are urged not to make any assumptions or to write any negative comments in social media as it will only make matters worse for the victim's family and friends," he said.

KOTA KINABALU: A man who made a 'pit stop' at a fuel station here to answer the call of nature but left his three-year-old son inside the vehicle with its engine running got the shock of his life when he returned to find the vehicle and child missing.

The incident happened around 6am yesterday when the 31-year-old father stopped his Toyota Vigo four-wheel-drive vehicle at the Shell fuel station in Kampung Air to go to the toilet.

When he came out a few minutes later, he found the vehicle missing along with his son who was asleep in the back seat.

While the vehicle was found by police abandoned at the Atkinson clock tower on Signal Hill around 9.30am less than four hours later, the boy, identified as Low Min You, was nowhere to be found and remained missing at press time last time.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun told a press conference here yesterday that police have mounted a search operation for the missing boy and urged members of the public with information on the incident to immediately come forward.

"Initial police investigation shows that the father had stopped at the petrol kiosk to use the toilet and left the engine running and the door unlocked.

"Immediately after receiving a police report, a massive search operation was carried out to find the boy," he said.

"We have also informed our counterparts from other districts of the incident to be on the lookout for the boy," he said.

Jauteh said Low was clad in a white T-shirt and blue short pants when he was last seen.

He urged anyone who has seen or knows the whereabouts of the boy to immediately contact the police at 088-529 270, 088-529 207 or the investigating officer at 016-357 2935.

Sabahans proud of race but not racists – Masidi

Posted: 09 May 2014 09:13 AM PDT

by Amy Dangin. Posted on May 10, 2014, Saturday

PENAMPANG: Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun said the people should be given the option to decide whether to state their race in the official forms.

"I think people should be given the right to decide whether or not they prefer to state their race (in official forms). If they prefer not to, then it is up to them," said Masidi.

"In the case of Sabah and Sarawak, I think it (stating race in official forms) is rarely the case of racism, as we are proud of race and we like it when people know what race we are.

The matter was first brought up by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun on Wednesday, although he apologised on Thursday saying that the matter was only discussed at the cabinet meeting.

"That is what makes Sabah what we are; we are proud of our race, yet we are not racists," said Masidi, when met at the launching of the Kadazan Society of Sabah (KSS) website at Wisma Kinsabina here yesterday.

Masidi, who was also asked to comment on the recent seminar on the use of the word 'Allah' and Christology at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam on May 6, said higher learning institutions should not be used as platforms to organise programmes that may contain elements of racism and bigotry which could stir racial and religious sentiments among society.

He expressed disappointment over the matter, which he opined was a case of unsuitable selection of venue.

"I think higher learning institutions, be they public or private, should be the platform for us to strengthen ties among our multiracial Malaysia, and not be used as a place to conduct programmes or activities that could be detrimental to the unity of our society," said Masidi.

Masidi, who is also chairman of UiTM Alumni Association Sabah, called for the government to look into the matter and ensured that thorough guidelines on the types of programmes allowed to be held at learning institutions, were outlined and complied with.

"Personally, I think the government should be heedful not to turn higher learning institutions into platforms for such programmes and hope that there will be no such issue in the future.

"As a former UiTM student myself, I'm sad that this has happened, because although there were religious-related programmes being held at our campus at that time, it was not anything like this. I hope the government will do what is necessary to ensure that campuses continue to serve as a platform for friendship and unity, and not otherwise," he said.

SIA ties up with China varsity to offer master’s programs

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Institute of Art (SIA) is setting up China Central Normal University (CCNU) Art Education Centre here to offer master's programmes in arts, namely graphic design, interior design, fashion design and music studies.

SIA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CCNU's College of International Cultural Exchange (CICE) from Wuhan, Hubei, China on Thursday evening to mark the beginning of the collaboration of both parties, in terms of establishing and developing academic exchange and cooperation in teaching, training, research and development.

The collaboration will enable SIA students to complete their last two years of bachelor's study at CCNU. It also allows SIA to offer CCNU's master's programmes in arts and music studies here, in addition to having exchanges in academic, training, exhibition and performance in the future.

SIA president cum chief executive officer Prof Dato' Dr Wilson Yong Tung Yung said arts design and music were good professions and graduates of both courses were in high demand in the job market.

"SIA produces up to 80 graduates in arts and music studies annually and most of them are 'booked' before they graduate."

"I get two to three phone calls daily from companies that want to recruit our graduates, but the supply cannot cope with the demand," Yong said in his speech.

Yong added that the teaching and learning of arts and music were not emphasized in our existing education system, and the teachers assigned to teach arts or music class in primary and secondary schools might not have the relevant background as well.

As a result, secondary school graduates were hesitant to further their tertiary studies in arts and music due to lack of confidence.

Without strong arts or music foundation, students enrolled in SIA also faced a certain level of difficulty in their studies, Yong said.

With the set up of the CCNU Art Education Centre, Yong said teachers could be trained and achieve a higher qualification in art design and music studies.

In turn, they could elevate the standard of teaching arts and music in schools, he said.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by many representatives from various education bodies and associations, including former Chief Minister cum founder of The Progressive Education Foundation Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee and the foundation's Consultative Council chairman Datuk Wong Yit Ming, assistant education director of Chinese school unit Tham Yun Fook, Sabah Chinese Primary School Working Committee chairman Datuk William Chu, former Deputy Chief Minister and veteran educationist Datuk Chau Tet On, The Association of Sabah National Type Chinese School Management Committee (Sabah Dong Lian) chairman Ben Lim Kiat Kong, SM Pei Tsin Kudat board of governors chairman Datuk Wong Phin Chung, Persatuan Guru-Guru Sekolah Cina Sabah representative Chee Chi Hiung, SM Kian Kok principal Lim Chian, Kapitan Wong Tet Yun and others.

Also present were dean of CICE at CCNU Zuo Bin, director of Enrollment Office at CICE Luo Jian and SIA head of academic Jessel P. Yansalang.

Tataba Wave Youth slams Perkasa chief

Posted: 09 May 2014 09:11 AM PDT

KENINGAU: The Tataba Wave Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth Coalition fully supports the leadership of Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.

The Youth Coalition consists of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and United Pasok Momugun Kadazandusun Murut Organization (UPKO).

Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, Sook PBRS Youth Chief, Kahirin Bador representing the three-party coalition said BN Youth would stand firm and loyal support to the leadership of the Pensiangan Member of Parliament.

"Kurup has played his role as minister responsible for keeping the unity of races and religious harmony in this country.

"Although his work is complex and challenging, his efforts have proved his sincere intention to continuously bring harmony and unity in this country," Kahirin said.

Kahirin was commenting on Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali's call for Kurup to resign as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

He said that Ibrahim was defeated in the last general election in his area which is populated by a majority of Malay voters.

"This shows that the people have rejected his extreme leadership," he said.

According to him, Ibrahim also does not have the power to give directions to the Prime Minister how to administer the government line-up cabinet.

"Ibrahim has no power to compel Kurup to resign as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department. Kurup has shown his good faith to see that the unity of the ethnics and religions in Malaysia are always in the best condition.

"This is why Kurup said that the implementation of hudud law would threaten the unity and harmony in the country at this point because the people come from multi-racial and religious backgrounds," he said.

He said the BN Youth coalition is highly confidence that the people of Sabah rejected Ibrahim's extremist leadership because of Sabahans' simplicity and high tolerance of each other in relation to the question of racial and religious unity.

According to him, a violent and extremist culture as shown by Ibrahim was not suitable for the state.

"With that, the young people of Tataba in BN coalition suggest that the state government ban the Perkasa president from entering this state for fear of bringing the seeds of ethnic and religious discord and harm which has been preserved so well all this time.

"We as Tataba Wave Youth Coalition of BN are proud to be natives of this state, which has become a model of ethnic and religious harmony in the country," he said.
