Posted: 11 Apr 2014 04:01 AM PDT Where are the state police and the forces of law and order when gangsters are calling the shots in Sarawak? We report that the latest development in the month long blockade by Iban communities in Tuyut is that the locals have been forced to abandon their post due to threats by these hired thugs working for land-grabbing companies. We speak to one local, Gary in Tuyut, who tells us that they have been scared by the land grabber's threats to bring more and more gangsters to disturb them. However, RFS has put the group in contact with the Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (SADIA). Nicholas Mujah, the Secretary-General of Sadia, encourages them not to be scared, he will visit them on Monday to assist. We will continue to monitor this situation which is being ignored by the police. Meanwhile, the number of people in Sarawak who receive poverty relief under the E-kasih programme has increased, according to a report by the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development. The Sarawak Workers Party's deputy president, George Lagong questions on today's show if it is possible to achieve the 'Vision 2020' or 'Sarawak Excellence 2030' if the number in poverty keeps increasing and the underlying problems are never solved? He urges these issues to be properly raised by state assembly in parliament – but of course, it only sits for one week twice a year at the moment! And yet another blockade has sprouted, according to callers. Iban tribes from Kampung Lebor, Danau Malikin rang up RFS first thing this morning to give us the first alert that 200 households have come out to block the lorries from Tabung Haji, which are still collecting their oil palm fruit illegally after losing a court case brought by the community. We speak to Jengga from Kampong Lebor about the eight year case. In fact, it seems there are blockades everywhere at the moment – we report on another, this time in West Malaysia, Kuala Krau, Pahang. Is the Sarawak method catching on? Finally, we probe into 'The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples' to let listeners examine for themselves if its principles are being respected and followed by the authorities in Sarawak, Malaysia at present? |
