BINTULU: Police are looking for Andy Tony from Rumah Stephen Sungai Bawan Kanowit to assist in investigation of a robbery at a warehouse in Kidurong Industrial Estate on Monday.

During the robbery, a foreign worker and his wife, both aged 24, were tied by seven to eight masked men armed with weapons around 2am.

The suspects then drove away two lorries parked in the warehouse.

Bintulu police chief Supt Madang Usat said the wife of the victim also claimed the suspects had molested her by touching her private parts.

After untying themselves, the victims informed his employer before calling police who alerted all police districts on the robbery.

"One of our mobile patrol units in Tatau spotted the two vehicles around 4am heading to Sibu and gave chase. The lorry drivers refused to stop and one of the lorries almost had contact with our police car," he said during a press conference at Bintulu Central Police Station yesterday.

Police managed to recover the two lorries abandoned at Km77 and Km87 of Tatau-Sibu road respectively, not far from the entry road to the nearby estate. All the suspects had escaped.

Police found a wallet which contained a MyKad and other documents belonging to Andy Tony in one of the vehicles. There were also a knife and ski masks.

The case is investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.

"Based on early investigations, we believe all the suspects are local.

The CCTV installed at the premises will be scrutinised," Madang said.

He urged the public who might know the whereabouts of the suspects to call the nearest police station or investigating officer Insp Leonard Lanking at 019-8155416 or 086-331121.

KUCHING: Thieves broke into a kindergarten at Jalan Stapok, Batu Kawah, carting away nearly everything of value inside and damaging its fixtures.

The break-in was discovered around 7am yesterday when teachers arrived for work to find the premises ransacked of its computers, DVD players, CCTV cameras, alarm system, bags of rice and about RM2,000 cash.

The perpetrators also vandalised the kindergarten by damaging the doors, window blinds and window frames.

A check showed the thieves gained entry into the premises by forcing open a window at the side of the building.

In a separate case, a cleaning supervisor claimed she was bundled into a car by strangers and robbed of her valuables before being dumped on the road on Monday.

The 32-year-old from Jalan Matang told police the incident happened around 1am while she was walking towards Demak Laut commercial centre from a nearby petrol station.

According to her, a Perodua Kancil with two men inside pulled up alongside her, dragged her into the vehicle, and sped off.

Inside the car, one of the men threatened her with a machete and ordered her to surrender her valuables: four mobile phones, a wristwatch, gold necklace, gold ring and wallet containing about RM350.

The robbers then drove to the State Stadium where they shoved her out from the car, resulting in her suffering bruises and scrapes on her arms.

A police report of the incident was lodged and the case is being investigated.

MIRI: Miri Crime Investigation Department (CID) cracked down on a vehicle theft and house break-in syndicate with the arrest of 10 suspects, including two girls, in an operation from 6am to late evening yesterday.

In the first arrest, the team rounded up eight individuals aged 19 to 42, including the first girl, at three different locations in Tudan at about 8.30am.

They also confiscated two motorcycles, a Kia Cerato car with fake Brunei registration plate number and several tools believed to be used in house break-ins.

The second female suspect was caught driving a stolen Perodua Kelisa in Tudan at about 3pm.

The car was reported missing on Monday by the owner.

The motorcycles and the Kelisa use fake registration numbers.

Miri police chief, ACP Gan Tian Kee when contacted yesterday declined to comment on the arrests, saying investigation is still ongoing.

The CID team has been on the move to crack down on vehicle thefts and house break-in cases around Miri since the beginning of this year with a number of cases solved and the arrest of suspects.

On March 9, police took down a similar syndicate and arrested three men — a local and his two illegal immigrant accomplices.

They also seized stolen goods worth about RM150,000 from the suspects.

With the arrest, police solved 10 break-in cases reported around Miri earlier this year.

New airport will trigger massive devt activities in Mukah — Recoda

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 12:40 PM PDT

KUCHING: Construction of the new Mukah airport will trigger massive economic activities in the district, says chief executive officer of Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot.

Recoda is an agency tasked with overseeing the development of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). It provides federal funds to the state implementing agencies for SCORE development projects, such as to JKR for the implementation of the Mukah Airport. "The new airport represents a brighter future for Mukah. It will trigger massive development in Mukah located right in the heart of SCORE area. The new airport also helps to turn Mukah into a Smart City."

He said since Mukah was also home to Recoda and SCORE's central administrative base, the town would be primed to become the service hub and nerve centre for the corridor, with emphasis on three special areas, namely knowledge, human resource skill development centre; research and development; and administrative centre.

He said a bigger airport would not only offer greater connectivity for the people but it would also be a big boost to the overall economy of the town and the division as a whole.

He said this at a media conference after the contract signing ceremony between state Public Works Department (JKR) as project implementer and the contractor Hock Peng Furniture and General Contractor Sdn Bhd here yesterday.

"Upon completion, the new airport is expected to generate enormous economic value not only for the town but will represent a significant milestone in the development of SCORE," Baya said.

He added that the greater ease and convenience of air travel afforded by the new and better-equipped airport would entice more people to come to Mukah, particularly investors and the business community.

"We can foresee that business in Mukah will benefit the most from the new airport".

He also said the improved connectivity provided by the new airport would potentially generate more indirect and induced employment opportunities, such as jobs created by the proposed Mukah Human Resource Skills Development Training Centre, proposed Mukah Science Park and R&D Centre, proposed Matadeng Industrial Park, hotel, catering, retail good supplies and the tourism industry.

Mukah to have new airport sooner than later

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 12:38 PM PDT

by Johnson K Saai, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on April 16, 2014, Wednesday

KUCHING: The dream of Mukah folk to have a bigger and better airport will become a reality sooner than later now that a contract to build a new airport was signed here yesterday.

The RM133-million earthwork will begin tomorrow and will be completed in 20 months' time.

The contract document was signed between Public Works Department as the project implementer and the contractor – Hock Peng Furniture & General Contractor Sdn Bhd. Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communications Dato Sri Michael Manyin and Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot were also there as witnesses.

Signing on behalf of JKR was its director Zuraimi Sakhi while Hock Peng Furniture & General Contractor Sdn Bhd was represented by its chairman and managing director Datuk Toh Chiew Hock.

Speaking at a news conference later, Manyin said the multi-million ringgit project was another milestone in Mukah and also the entire central region covering urban centres like Mukah, Tanjung Manis, Simalajau, Sibu, Bintulu, Sarikei and Kapit.

"On completion, the new airport, a Code 3C airport catering for ATR72 or F50 aircraft, will help to speed up economic activities at the coastal area and also to sustain the economic development brought about by Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

"The airport will not be able to cater for Boeing B737 or Airbus A320 aircraft but it will be built in such a way that it can be quickly upgraded to Code 4C airport when the need arises in future."

Manyin said Hock Peng Furniture & General Contractor Sdn Bhd was among 20 companies that bid for the proposed airport situated 7km southwest of Mukah- between the town and Mukah Polytechnic.

To a question from the media, Manyin said the airport project had nothing to do with the recent Balingian by-election but something that had actually been long planned by the government.

"The airport will help to cater to development expected to take place in the central region and SCORE. We are most grateful to the federal government for looking into our needs."

He said the estimated cost of the five-year project was RM340 million and of the amount RM133 million was for the earthworks which included site clearing, removal of unsuitable top soil and treatment of the underlying soil by installing 'wick drains'.

"The initial earthwork is expected to be completed by December 2015 while the next phase of the work will take another 24 months to complete," Manyin said.
