Youth gets jail, rotan for assaulting woman

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 12:44 PM PDT

SIBU: A youth ordered by the Sessions Court here to stay behind bars for 10 years was also handed 10 lashes after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a middle-aged
woman.

Tommy Lingga was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code which provides for jail up to 20 years and whipping on conviction.

In passing sentence yesterday, Judge Indra Ayub said he had taken into account the accused's good sense to plead guilty, the nature of the offence, public interest and the severe injury inflicted on the victim.

The court had earlier heard that Lalang Ubo was taken by Tommy on a motorcycle to look for her friend Banggau Angkop along Mujong Road in Kapit around 6pm on Oct 25 last year.

They quarrelled on the way when Tommy wanted to catch frogs instead. Tommy used his parang to slash Lalang, injuring her right hand, scalp and left wrist.

Later he sent her to hospital.

Suspected thief ‘sold’ out his companion to police

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 12:43 PM PDT

SIBU: A man's attempt to break into a house was foiled when police was led to the crime scene by his purported accomplice yesterday morning.

The incident unfolded at about 4.30am when police in a patrol car stopped a suspicious car at Gambir Road.

They immediately arrested the driver as the car had a fake number plate, did not have road tax, and the driver had a criminal record for thefts.

The suspected thief then told police that his 'accomplice' was in the midst of breaking into a house nearby and led the men in blue to the scene. When the other suspect saw policemen, he fled to another house, but was eventually arrested.

In another incident, a man was nabbed for smashing a glass panel and splashing petrol onto a pub belonging to his wife.

Following a report lodged by his wife, police caught the man at a cyber gambling den at 12.30am yesterday.

The 40-something man was said to have gone to the pub at about 10.30pm on Sunday and threatened his wife.

In a separate case, Narcotics officers arrested two brothers for suspected involvement in drug trafficking.

The suspects were caught at a cyber gambling den in Bukit Assek at 10pm last Saturday.

Police said the duo would be sent to the Simpang Renggam Detention Centre.

CM: Let’s aim for a ‘greener tomorrow’

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 12:41 PM PDT

KUCHING: Landscape architects must do their bit and the education curriculum must contain elements of environmental care in order to help create highly-developed environmental systems for the benefit of future generations.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem noted that countries with such systems were also those with successful economies and high standard of living.

"Environment and landscape are among subjects that are very close to our hearts. It is valued all over the world for its ability to preserve and conserve the environment, develop human potential and to contribute to economic growth," he said at the opening of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Asia Pacific Congress 2014 here yesterday.

His text of speech was read out by Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

Adenan said landscape architects, in particular, had to play the dual functions of preparing the best living condition for the citizens of tomorrow and to help the nation preserve its environmental capital.

"We have to move from the traditional and static structure of our environmental policy and guidelines to accommodate changes that will bring more dynamism to economic and environmental growth.

"What needs to be looked urgently apart from all the provided policies is to include transforming the educational perspectives and envisioning the curriculum of the future to include care and concern for our living environment and our beloved Mother Nature."

"Questions such as what kind of citizens are we hoping to produce, what kind of future will there be, what kind of work structure and what kind of economy and what kind of environment need to be posed, considered and discussed so that the growth of environmental economic-based strategies that will be adopted in the future are apt with the changing times."

Adenan said the output from this three-day congress, themed `A Greener Tomorrow', would be useful for policy makers, practitioners, industry players, environmentalists, landscape architects, planners, engineers and educationists to face the challenging tasks that lie ahead of them.

"Let's equip ourselves with a passion for excellence and quality in our natural and built environment so that our Mother Nature and greens will be prepared for a future that is more secure for them all.

"I have set my vision to preserve our natural and built environment."
