KUCHING: A total of 16,133 copies of bootleg VCDs and DVDs of local and foreign entertainment titles worth RM85,574.50 have been seized in the state since April 21 this year.

The operation in the state, codenamed 'Ops Cetak Rompak', was spearheaded by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) and it also involved personnel from the State Commercial Crimes Investigation Department, Film Censorship Control and Enforcement Division, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), local councils and trademark holders.

MDTCC state director Stanley Tan told a press conference here yesterday that the main objective of this nationwide swoop was to show the government's seriousness in clamping down on bootleg activities in the country.

It was also meant to help clear Malaysia's name from the United States Trade Representative (USTR) 301 Report.

In Sarawak, he said the 16,133 copies of VCDs and DVDs were seized from 44 premises, and topping the list in terms of value were those from Sibu, Sarikei, Bintulu and Miri.

Tan said no arrests had been made so far as investigations were still ongoing.

He added the investigations would be carried out under the Trade Descriptions (Optical Disc Label) Order 2010, which carries a maximum penalty of RM100,000 or three years jail or both, and the Trademark Act 1987, which carries a penalty of between RM2,000 and RM20,000 for each bootleg copy or five years jail, or both, upon conviction.

Seized titles during the operation included MTV Karaoke Iban Panggau Pemerindang Toddy (PBP), MTV Karaoke Bintang Pop Iban Terbilang (ANP), VCD Betty Joget Semaya Puntan (Golden Pearl), VCD Iban Karaoke Maxwell Franklin Saran (Selindang Mayang Pesaka Nyawa), VCD Iban Karaoke Raja Joget Terbilang Iban (GP), Kasam Dihan, Terpaksa Bitingkah, Iban Hit Karaoke Peter James, Bintang Pop Terbilang Rickie Anderson, Nostalgia Bersama Rickie Anderson, Gawai 1Malaysia, Aku bisi nuan and Genggam Jariku and Kumang.

"We will continue to conduct this operation and strengthen our cooperation with all relevant agencies until a stop can be brought to this activity [sic]," Tan said.

He hoped more individuals, especially album trademark holders, would come forward and lodge reports against bootleggers.

The public are also reminded to refrain from buying bootleg titles and lodge a complaint by calling the MDTCC hotline at 1-800-886-800.

Neighbour’s wake-up call saves fisherman from fiery fate in Kpg Muhibbah

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 12:43 PM PDT

KUALA BARAM: A neighbour's shouts saved a fisherman from a fire which razed his wooden house in Kampung Muhibbah, Kuala Baram, here during the wee hours on Thursday.

Noah Bilong Wahid, 30, injured his left ankle as he jumped out the window of his bedroom located on the upper floor.

"I felt very tired when I returned home that night. I didn't even take my bath as I had fallen asleep as soon as I hit the bed. I didn't realize that my house was on fire as I was too deep asleep," said Noah, relating the incident.

According to the victim, he was jolted awake when shouting alerted him that his house was on fire. As the fire was already widespread, Noah leapt from his bedroom window to save himself.

"I didn't have the time to grab and save anything important. All I could think of was just to save myself from the fire. My ankle was injured as the place I jumped from is quite high," said Noah while showing his injured ankle to Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman, visited and handed over immediate assistance in the form of cash, clothing, ration and cooking utensil from the Welfare Department and Miri Red Crescent apart from his personal donation.

According to Noah, he was staying alone in the house which he inherits from his deceased parents.

Although the case is still under investigation, the victim suspected that the fire might be caused by short circuit and started in the kitchen.

"I suspected that it was caused by short circuit in the kitchen as I didn't do any cooking that night as (I was) too tired," said Noah and thanked Lee, Welfare Department and Miri Red Crescent for the immediate relief rendered to him. Noah is currently putting up with a neighbour.

Relating to the incident, Lee reminded villagers to hire a proper electrician to check their house wiring.

"It is dangerous for them to connect or do the wiring system themselves although they know the basics. They might get electrocuted in the process or trigger a short circuit and burn down the house," Lee added.

Lee commended Noah's neighbour for being alert which saved Noah from perishing in the fire.

During the visit, Lee was accompanied by Kampung Muhibbah Neighborhood Committee chairman Mohd Azis.
