Posted: 21 Apr 2014 10:03 AM PDT

KENINGAU: A self-employed local man was killed when the vehicle he was driving overturned while negotiating a bend along Bunsit-Bingkor road near Kampung Tuntumulud here on Sunday afternoon.

Four passengers of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

District police chief DSP Robert Salisip @ David said yesterday that the Endy Paulus, 34, from Kampung Bandukan Baru Bingkor, died at the scene of the accident at around 4 pm.

Robert said the police received information of the fatal accident at Kampung Tuntumulud Bingkor here from the public.

Initial police investigation revealed that the self-accident involved a Ford pick-up driven by the deceased who was proceeding from Bunsit to Bingkor town. While negotiating a bend along along Bunsit-Bingkor road near Kampung Tuntumulud, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and overturned to the right bank of the road," Robert said, adding that the deceased was thrown out of the vehicle and died at the scene due to severe head injuries.

He said the four passengers travelling with the deceased, aged between 24 and 33 years old who are siblings and relatives, were slightly injured.

"Reportedly, the group had gone for a bath at the Bunsit River and were on their way home when the accident happened," Robert said.

He added that weather and road conditions at the time of the accident were fine and that the body of the deceased had been sent to the Keningau hospital for a post-mortem.

PBS Tandek says hudud law against spirit of 1Malaysia

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 09:58 AM PDT

KOTA MARUDU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Tandek division passed a resolution rejecting any attempt to implement hudud law in any state or in the federation as it is detrimental to Malaysia's future.

Its division chief Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili, said any move to implement or support hudud law was against the spirit of the Federal Constitution and 1Malaysia.

"PBS Tandek rejects the plan by PAS to table a Private Member's Bill in Parliament to impose hudud laws in Kelantan. The Federal Constitution guarantees that while Islam is the official religion, every citizen is free to practise their own religion.

"Although they say hudud law will only apply to Muslims, its implementation will dictate the lifestyle of everyone, including non-Muslims. This is anti 1Malaysia," he said in his policy speech during the division's 29th annual general meeting and division elections here yesterday.

Maximus, who is also Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister and Kota Marudu member of parliament, also urged other Barisan Nasional parties to make a strong stand against any move to implement hudud laws.

"We are concerned that if we allow it in Kelantan it will open the doors for hudud laws to be imposed on other races and in other states. We do not wish for it to come to this for the sake of Malaysia, all Malaysians and 1Malaysia," he added.DAP Sabah is also against the implementation of hudud law in the country.

Its chairman Jimmy Wong said on Sunday that the party would uphold the spirit of the late Karpal Singh to reject the implementation of hudud law in the country.

In the Tandek PBS division elections, Maximus and Tandek assemblywoman Anita Baranting were returned unopposed as the division chief and deputy chief.

Division Youth chief Christoper Mandut and his deputy Junid Gunsalam were also returned unopposed while Julita Dalinsi was elected division Wanita chief.

PBS division against accepting partyless reps joining BN parties

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 09:56 AM PDT

KOTA MARUDU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Tandek division rejected the acceptance of any elected representatives who had contested against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates as members of any BN party members.

Its division chief Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili, said the stand was made following remarks by Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup who had reportedly been in talks with Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives who have left their parties and are trying to gain entry into BN.

"Even I have been contacted by the opposition elected representatives who wanted to jump ship days after the election. They know it was better for them to be in BN as they could not fulfil their promises to their voters.

"But we do not entertain them as PBS holds firmly by the stand of the central BN that elected representatives who were previously BN members but contested against us in the election cannot be accepted by any BN component parties without the unanimous consensus of the BN national supreme council.

"It is BN's stand that such assemblymen or MPs are welcomed to become Independents who support BN. But any entry to a BN component party must be with prior approval of the BN supreme council," he said.

Kurup said during a dinner with the media fraternity in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday night that PBRS is opening its doors to allow independent elected representatives to join the party.

He said any independent assemblymen in Sabah who wished to join the party are welcomed but must go through the normal process.

"There is no harm in any independent assemblymen, even to those who are not a BN member to join the party. They may feel comfortable and closer to us, and what is important they must subscribe to the BN spirit," he said.

Two independent assemblymen from PKR and DAP, Jeremmy Ukoh Malajad of Kadamaian and Dr Hiew King Cheu of Luyang were at the dinner.

PKR defectors in Sabah late last year have expressed interest to join PBRS but as of to date, none of them have registered.

The two are Matunggong assemblyman Jelani Hamdan and Jeremmy Malajad who are fresh faces in the 60-member Sabah state legislative assembly, elected in the recent general election in May, last year. It is said that Hiew is also interested to join PBRS.

Maximus added that it was natural for PBRS which has only one MP and one assemblyman, to want to increase its members just as the desire of other political parties.

"But there are rules and decorum to abide by and we cannot do things at our whims and fancy. Kurup said there is no harm in any independent assemblymen joining PBRS. There is no harm for him but a lot of harm and destruction for BN," he said.

Maximus said there were also those who were not nominated to contest and have deserted their respective parties and now trying to return to BN's fold after doing damage to BN during the election campaign.

"If we easily accept them back we are just encouraging disgruntled members in future to contest against BN and return after the fight is over. We will also be encouraging hopping troops.

"Therefore, we cannot be selfish but think of the interest of BN," he said, adding that BN's principles must be upheld in order for the coalition to thrive under the basis of cooperation and unity among its component parties.

"Kurup is a veteran politician and he should know this and refrain from causing instability in the BN family," he added.

KOTA KINABALU: Police personnel have been urged to relive the force's glory days in sports.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said facilities would be provided to encourage police personnel to improve their sport performance.

"The police used to have eminent players in the 70s and 80s in football, badminton, sepak takraw, athletics, rugby, hockey, and netball," he said at the presentation of the IGP Cup Golf Tournament 2014 here Sunday night. His speech was read by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin.

Khalid said the main objective of the competition was to unearth talents and prepare police golfers for national and international tournaments such as the World Police and Fire Games.

The Royal Malaysia Police bagged eight gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals at last year's tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland, apart from lifting two gold, four silver and four bronze medals in the golf championship. Commending police athletes for their achievements, he said their triumphs helped raise the stature of the Royal Malaysia Police in sports internationally.
