LABUAN: Some some 255 central processing units (CPUs), 252 computer monitors, 404 chairs and tables, and some RM12,250.20 cash have been seized during a one-week integrated operation to curb illegal gambling premises on the island.

Disclosing this on Friday, Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli said the raiding team comprised 50 personnel from Labuan Corporation, police, Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission, Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department and Labuan Civil Defence Department.

He said the one-week operation (from April 18 to 24) led by Labuan Corporation  raided a total of 31 illegal gaming premises.

"This kind of activity (illegal cyber gambling) is not welcome in Labuan and we are determined to fight this activity, as it is tarnishing Labuan's image.

"Illegal gambling is damaging to the society here as it will affect the family institution. Addiction to gambling will cause the gambler to be trapped into another problem such as debts and eventually leads to crime like cheating," Rozman said this to reporters on Friday.

"I was informed that during the one-week operation from 3pm to 12pm, all the persons in the premises managed to run away," he said and added he believed there were 'guards' at the premises to watch out for the presence of law enforcement agencies.

He said vehicles of Labuan Corporation personnel involved in the operation were being followed by some vehicles of those believed to be involved in illegal gaming businesses.

However, he said all their vehicle registration numbers had been recorded.

"Building owners whose premises had been used to operate illegal cyber gaming activities were questioned and the warning letters would be issued to them. We are giving premises owners a month to claim their assets that we had seized.

"If there is no claim by then, all the assets would be considered as disposal items. We thanked the people for giving us the information about the illegal gaming activity," he said.

Also present at the press conference were Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer, Datuk Mohd Nadzri Osman, LC deputy chief executive officer, Siti Maznah Awang Damit, LC enforcement officer, Musa Bariong and Labuan Umno deputy chief Datuk Bashir Alias.

Two bogus property dealers nabbed over RM1.5 mln swindle – CP

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 10:20 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested two people, including a woman, who were suspected to be involved in property frauds in the state capital.

Both suspects, aged 47 and 48, were arrested by a police team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at a premises in Karamunsing here at 12.55pm on April 24.

It is believed that the suspects were involved in 17 property frauds with the victims losing RM1.5 million through selling non-existent construction projects and bungalow units.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said earlier investigation showed the company did not have any legal licence to operate a construction company or to collect deposit from buyers.

"Investigation shows that the 48-year-old woman is the director of the company and is being assisted by the 47-year-old man.

"During the raid on Thursday, police have seized three computer sets, account books, documents and other items police believed being used for their activity," he said after launching the Royal Malaysia Police special recruitment exercise campaign for Chinese community at Palm Square at Centre Point shopping complex here yesterday.

According to Hamza, the modus operandi of the suspects was to advertise false advertisement in local newspapers about construction projects and sales of bungalow units at bargain prices throughout Sabah.

"Investigation reveals that interested buyers are required to pay a 20 percent deposit of the total price for a unit, while each company agent who managed to 'close' a sale would be given 10 percent commission from the deposit paid by the customer," he said.

Hamza added that police investigation showed that 76 people had paid for the deposit with losses amounting to RM1.56 million without any sales or purchase agreement being made or handing-over of house key to them as promised.

As of yesterday, 17 police reports had been lodged by victims from four districts, namely Penampang, Kudat, Kota Belud and Ranau, Hamza said and added that both suspects had been remanded to facilitate police investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
