KUCHING: Sabah grabbed the major share of the lion's spoils at the 100Plus National Junior Circuit Sabah Sarawak Zone badminton championship when they captured 13 out of the 16 categories in the three-day competition at Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Hall last Sunday.

The visitors grabbed three titles in the U12 categories, with unseeded Mohd Hamizan Mozes beating teammate and tournament second seed Demond Anthony Samin 21-17, 21-13 in the Boys U12 singles final, favourite Arena Satu Samin beating teammate Goh Shuen Tong 19-21, 21-15, 21-18 in the Girls U12 singles while Mohd Hamizan Mozes and Lincoln Isaac Shim upsetting top seeds Demond Anthony Samin and Naldo Fong Kuo Yoong 15-21, 21-15, 21-18 in an all-Sabah Boys U12 doubles final.

Sarawak's Erika Vallensia and Wong Ling Ching, the top seeds, prevented Sabah from sweeping all the U12 categories when they beat teammates Kashley Kho Tze Yin and Yong En En 21-18, 21-14 to lift the Girls U12 doubles title.

However, it was a clean sweep for Sabah in the U14 categories as top seed Neville Baptist Luaran beat Sarawak's Syafiq Azhar Murat, the second seed, 23-21, 21-16 in the singles final while the top seed player Petrica Eleng Samin overcame Sarawak's second seed player Felicia Fong Xin Hui 21-12, 24-22 in the girls singles final.

Petricia partnered Shannia Dedee Richard to upset the top seeds from Sarawak Felicia Fong Xin Hui and Flora Fong Xin Jie 21-18, 20-22, 21-15 in the girls doubles while the boys doubles final saw Ling Dai Hao and Neville Baptist Luaran taking the title after defeating teammates Jaykester Jenenius and Macvin Marvin Martin 21-17, 21-17.

Kam Wei Li from Miri salvaged some pride for Sarawak as the fourth seed won the Girls U16 singles title after beating team and training mate Yong Ping Ping 11-7 (retired) in the final.

Wei Li then partnered Ping Ping to easily beat another Sarawak pair Jee Yu Fei and Kristy Tay Yong 21-11, 21-15 in the Girls U16 doubles final.

The Boys U16 singles and doubles crowns were captured by Sabah with Wan Mohd Hidayat Wan Hassan defeating Sarawak's Wilson Lau Ngie Ding 15-21, 21-17, 21-9 and Casey Yong-Yap Qar Siong beating Sarawak pair Jeremy Kho-Owen Ting Shih Wee 21-7, 21-16 respectively.

The highlight of the tournament was in the Boys U18 singles final that saw Sarawak's Clement Chieng Jia Yew beating his teammate Eric Jong Zie Sheng 21-17, 21-15.

Sabah took the Girls U18 singles crown when Lydia Habirin Lapongan tamed teammate Donnetta Avrelica Moisol 21-18, 21-10 in the final.

Lydia completed a double in the tournament when she partnered Joanne Chai Guan Jun to overcome another Sabah pair Grace Lee Yi Jing and Nur Adilah Syafiqah Adiman 24-26, 21-11, 21-17 in the Girls U18 doubles final.

The Boys U18 doubles title was won by Sabah's Muhd Sharul Nazim Rahman and his brother Muhd Sharul Nizam who beat Sarawak's Eric Jong Zie Sheng and Kam Sing Siong 19-21, 21-19, 21-17.

Women’s kabaddi team raise expectations

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 09:06 AM PDT

by Matthew Umpang, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on April 16, 2014, Wednesday

KUCHING: Sarawak Kabaddi Association (SKA) have raised their ambitions for the women's team as they prepare for the 2015 Sukma.

There is cause for optimism following the team's performance at the inaugural National Kabaddi Tournament held in Klang, Selangor from April 5 – 6.

The newly assembled team reached the final only to lose 16-22 to 2011 Sukma champions Selangor.

"We were close to winning the title during the tournament but I guess the more experienced team won that day.

"There is indeed a positive from that match," state head coach Ganisan Punisamy told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He revealed that it had been a painstaking process to select the right players for the team.

Like the men's team, most of the state women's team are made up of Bumiputra players, unlike most teams from other states which field all Indians.

"Everybody can play this game and, like any other game or sport, it takes passion and determination to excell in this.

"I don't see any problem why people of other races should not take part in this beautiful sport," Ganisan added.

Sarawak only started playing kabaddi, a traditional Indian sport, seriously in 2008 where the state men's team made their first appearance in an exhibition match during that year's Sukma held in Terengganu.

The state did not send a women's team for the 2013 Sukma as the association considered that it was not up to par yet.

"With the current team, I think we are ready for next year's Sukma.

"It's not impossible that we can even win the kabaddi gold medal next year too provided that we put our minds to it," Ganisan said.

Legend Phelps to return to pool

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 09:05 AM PDT

WASHINGTON: Olympic swimming superstar Michael Phelps, who retired from the sport after taking six medals at the 2012 London Olympics, will make his competitive comeback next week at a US Grand Prix series event in Mesa, Arizona, USA Swimming announced Monday.

The American returned to the anti-doping test programme last year and his long-time coach, Bob Bowman, had indicated earlier that there would be a comeback, which could see the record 22-time Olympic medalist continue his career all the way to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Phelps, who turns 29 in June, and fellow Olympic champions and world record holders Ryan Lochte and Katie Ledecky were announced as swimming in the Arizona event April 24-26.

"As of today, I definitely expect him to swim," Bowman told USA Today newspaper Monday. "We're looking forward to it. I think it'll be great for the sport to have Michael compete again. We really don't have any expectations for what might happen. We just want to have some fun with it and see how it goes."

It will be Phelps' first competitive meet since the 2012 London Games. Phelps won four golds and two silvers at London, giving him a record 18 gold medals, including an unprecedented eight in a single Games at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

A possible target for Phelps would be the US Championships in Irvine, California, August 6-10. That will be the American team selection meet for the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Bowman said Phelps would likely concentrate on relays and shorter events, including the 100 metre butterfly and 100 metre freestyle. He is entered in both those events on the first day in Arizona.

"Those are both on the first day, and he'll probably try both of those (preliminaries) in the morning, see how it goes, and maybe do one final if he gets to the finals," Bowman said. "The next day, he's entered (in the 50 free) and will probably do a 50 butterfly. We don't know yet.

"After this, we can decide what he wants to do next."

Monday's news was not unexpected. Bowman told the American media last month that Phelps has been training an average of five times a week.

When speculation about a return began last May, Phelps would neither confirm nor deny at the time that he was considering trying to qualify for the Rio Olympics,

He rejoined the US Anti-Doping Agency's testing pool last year, and now that he's been available for testing for six months is eligible to compete.

"It's historic, it's going to be a media spectacle," said Paul Smith, chief executive of the Mesa Aquatics Club where the meet will take place.

Bowman said on Monday that the timing was ideal for this.

"This meet happens to be at the right time," Bowman said. "He's eligible to swim in a meet, and he thought it might be fun to do one.

"We heard this was a great meet. I don't think it was something we had targeted; it came up at the right time." — AFP

Sarawak grab four gold at national Taekwondo tourney

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 09:04 AM PDT

KUCHING: Exponents from Sarawak Taekwondo Association (WTF) did well in the second leg of the Sportexcel-NSC-Milo Taekwondo Malaysia National Junior and Senior Circuit (WTF) in Perlis recently.

The 10-member team led by state technical chairman and chief instructor Tan Check Joon captured four gold, two silver and three bronze medals to finish third overall in the 17 and above age-group.

Tie Ton Siong, Mohd Amirul, Marena Tee, Cynthia Li delivered the gold medals while the silver medallists were Virtlam Umpau and Licky Donny Ling.

The bronzes were contributed by Michelle Ting, Chai Chun Hui, Caren Li Ying Ning and Enzo Scifo. Association president Mohamad Salleh Sani was very impressed with the team's overall performance and said the young exponents had displayed moments of true grit during the two-day national meet.

"I want to make it very clear to all that the Sarawak Taekwondo Association (WTF) is the only authorised state governing body for taekwondo (WTF) activities in Sarawak which are recommended and highly recognised by the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) to send exponents to represent the state and nation in the Malaysia Games (Sukma), South-east Asia Games (SEA Games) and other regional tournaments that are supported and organised by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and its affiliates," he said.

The team coaches were Kochphoom Nimmit and Li Jin Voon while the referees were Shirley Wong and Joseph Chang.
