KUCHING: Outgoing Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is expected to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Shah Mu'adzam on Friday to receive his credentials as the seventh Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

Bernama has learned that the audience will be held at Istana Negara at 3pm and Taib will return to Kuching on the same day.

The Sarawak Chief Minister's Department Public Relations and Corporate Affairs Unit, in a statement yesterday, said the new Yang di-Pertua Negeri would be given a rousing reception at the Kuching International Airport at 8pm on his return from Kuala Lumpur.

The new Yang di-Pertua Negeri will be sworn-in at the Sarawak State Assembly, Petra Jaya on Saturday.

Bernama also learned that Minister in the Chief Minister's Office Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem will be sworn-in as the new chief minister on Friday before outgoing Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin at Astana Negeri at 9am.

It will be Salahuddin's final official ceremony before Taib takes over as head of state.

With his appointment as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Taib has to step down as Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president and Balingian assemblyman.

A by-election will be held in Balingian if the state seat is declared vacant.

In the 2011 state election, Taib retained the Balingian seat in a three-cornered fight, defeating Suriati Abdullah of Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Datuk Salleh Jafaruddin (Independent) by a 5,154 vote-majority. — Bernama

Help Muslim youths, mosque committees told – BorneoPost Online ...

KUCHING: Mosques must be used for activities that could strengthen the moral fibre of Muslim youths, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

"The number of Muslim youths getting involved in crimes is increasing. Mosque committees should take note of this worrying development and hold more religious activities that would benefit youths.

"The Muslim community must make good use of mosques for religious as well as community programmes," he said at the presentation ceremony of Friday Prayers certificate (Sijil Mendirikan Solat Jumaat) to Nurir Rahmani Mosque in Kampung Santubong yesterday.

On another note, Wan Junaidi hoped the Nurir Rahmani Mosque committee would continue to source for funds to organise beneficial programmes for the local Muslim community.

"I hope the committee will try to source for funds instead of just relying on allocations from elected representatives. That way more things can be achieved."

He added that either the prime minister or chief minister was expected to officially launch the new building of the mosque, which cost RM3.4 million to build.

Also present were Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Sarawak Islamic Council secretary Ismail Mohd Hanis and mosque committee chairman Ibrahim Seruji.

KUCHING: The nude body of a widow was discovered yesterday in the bedroom of a shop house unit at the Batu Kawah New Township.

The deceased, aged 47, was found around 3.30pm after her father-in-law alerted the management of the commercial centre to check on her when he failed to contact her.

According to sources, the father-in-law had decided to visit her out of worry after failing to contact her since Wednesday, but arrived to find her unit on the second floor locked.

He then notified the management of the commercial centre of his concern, prompting a team to use a skylift to peer into the unit from the front window.

After spotting the nude body of the deceased sprawled on her bed, the management immediately alerted the police, who found no signs of foul play in the death.

The body of the widow, who lived alone following her husband's passing a year ago, was subsequently sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

In a separate case, a 34-year-old man was found hanging from a tree at his farm in Telaga Air, Matang yesterday afternoon. The man was found lifeless around 4pm by family members, who immediately reported the matter to police.

Sources disclosed that the deceased, whose house was located not far from his farm, was found hanging from the neck with a rope tied to a tree branch.

Police classified the incident as sudden death and sent the body to the Sarawak General Hospital for a post-mortem.

Longhouse chiefs thankful for upgraded road – BorneoPost Online ...

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 12:05 PM PDT

SIBU: Works to upgrade the 6km flood-prone stretch of Bekakap/Sg Melanggan Road in Bawang Assan was completed recently at a cost of RM1.2 million.

Residents of Sg Apong and Sg Melanggan are particularly happy with the project which began in November last year.

Longhouse chief Melina Gerasi said the project would hopefully make flooding in the area a thing of the past.

Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh commissioned the upgraded road on March 30.

Melina, who was also at the commission ceremony held on Sg Bekakap Bridge, said the road was riddled with potholes before the project.

"With the upgraded road, our travel will be less time consuming," he enthused.

Her sentiments were echoed by another longhouse chief, Siah Geramong.

Siah said sending children to school was a tedious task when the road was in deplorable condition.

"No longer so with the improvement to the road," he said.

Longhouse chief Unjah Besh, on the other hand, saw the project as a gesture from the government to reciprocate the support it got from the people.
