Samarahan storm into Girls U18 semis Posted: 24 Apr 2014 10:10 AM PDT KUCHING: Tournament favourites Samarahan stormed into the semi-finals of the Girls U18 competition of the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Hockey Championships after trouncing Kapit 5-0 at the State Hockey Stadium here yesterday. The defending champions are unbeaten in Group A after edging Sibu 3-2 in the opener and following up with a 9-1 thumping of Mukah to record three wins and collect nine points, banging in a total of 17 goals and conceding only three. Samarahan will face Group B runners-up Bintulu in today's first semi-final after the latter finished with six points from two wins and one defeat. The other semi-final will see last year's runners-up Kuching taking on Mukah after they topped Group B with nine points from three wins, beating Bintulu 3-0, Betong 10-1 and Miri 2-0. Mukah collected four points from a win and a draw to finish second in Group A. In the Boys U18 contest, defending champions Kuching were held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Sibu side yesterday, thus hurting their chances of retaining their title. The title will only be decided when they meet Samarahan on the final day on Saturday. Samarahan are better placed after recording two straight wins, edging Sibu 3-2 on Tuesday and blanking Bintulu 4-0 on Wednesday. They have six points in the bag when compared to Kuching's four. Meanwhile, Kuching have virtually won the Girls U12 title after registering their third win in the five-team competition by defeating defending champions Sibu 1-0 yesterday. They beat Samarahan and Mukah by similar margins and they will only be looking to keep their unbeaten record intact when they play Bintulu in their final league match tomorrow. Kuching are set to clinch a double in the U12 category as their boys are also doing very well in the five-team competition. They opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Samarahan on Tuesday and the following day, they ran riot over Bintulu with a 7-0 victory. Kuching are not expected to face any problem in seeing off the challenge from Mukah today and they will face their toughest test on Saturday when they take on defending champions Sibu. |

Ancelotti happy as Real thrive without much from Ronaldo, Bale Posted: 24 Apr 2014 10:07 AM PDT MADRID: Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his team for beating holders Bayern Munich in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, first leg without their two biggest names taking a leading role. Cristiano Ronaldo, top scorer in this season's competition, struggled after returning from injury and record signing Gareth Bale only played the final 20 minutes following a bout of flu. Karim Benzema scored the winner in the 19th minute at the Bernabeu, setting Real up nicely ahead of Tuesday's second leg in Munich as they seek a first appearance in the final since they won their ninth European crown in 2002. "Without Bale and with Cristiano at 50 per cent it is not easy to play so well," Ancelotti told a news conference. The Italian, in his first season in charge, said it had been agreed Ronaldo would only play part of the match after missing the last four games with knee and thigh muscle problems and he was replaced by Bale in the 73rd minute. "We did not want to run any risks and tire out the muscle," Ancelotti said. "Cristiano played well. He wasn't at 100 per cent but he sacrificed himself a lot and on Tuesday he will be better, just like Bale. "We are happy to have him (Ronaldo) back. He worked very hard to help the team." Ancelotti said Real had a "small advantage" ahead of the trip to Munich as they chase an elusive 10th European title. "The result was a good one. We have to know that we will suffer (in Munich) but we will give our all just like today," he said. — Reuters |
Chelsea trio in hot waterMourinho, Faria, Ramires charged with misconduct by FA Posted: 24 Apr 2014 10:06 AM PDT LONDON: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, assistant Rui Faria and midfielder Ramires have been charged over their behaviour during their side's loss to Sunderland last weekend, the Football Association announced on Wednesday. Mourinho mocked match referee Mike Dean after the game, which Sunderland won 2-1 through an 82nd-minute Fabio Borini penalty to condemn the Portuguese to his first ever home league defeat as Chelsea manager. Faria was sent to the stands for angrily confronting the match officials, while Ramires appeared to strike Sunderland midfielder Sebastian Larsson in an off-the-ball incident during the first half. "Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct in respect of post-match comments he made following the fixture," read a statement on the FA website. "It is alleged that Mourinho's comments constitute improper conduct, in that they call into question the integrity of the referee appointed to the above fixture and/or the integrity of Mr Mike Riley, General Manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, and/or the comments bring the game into disrepute." Speaking after the game, Mourinho told Sky Sports: "Congratulations to Mike Dean, because he made a fantastic performance. "And congratulations to Mike Riley (head of refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited), because what they did during the season was fantastic for the way the championship is going." Dean's decision to award Sunderland a penalty after Cesar Azpilicueta slid in on Jozy Altidore prompted a furious reaction in the home dug-out, with Faria having to be restrained by Mourinho as he shouted at the referee. Faria has been charged with two counts of misconduct, with the FA designating his case "a non-standard case due to the aggressive and/or threatening and/or serious nature of the reported behaviour". Ramires, meanwhile, has been charged with violent conduct over the incident with Larsson, in which the Brazilian midfielder appeared to swing his arm into his opponent's face. As Dean missed the incident, it was referred to a three-man review panel of former elite referees. "In this case the panel were unanimous that it was an act of violent conduct," the FA said. Ramires has until 6pm local time (1700 GMT) on Thursday to respond to the charge, while Mourinho and Faria have until the same time on Monday. Mourinho has had two previous run-ins with match officials this season. He was fined and warned as to his future conduct after being sent to the stands during a 1-0 loss at Aston Villa in March, in which Ramires was sent off, and was also fined for being sent off in a game at Cardiff City in October. — AFP |
Sturridge hopeful of returning against Chelsea Posted: 24 Apr 2014 10:05 AM PDT LIVERPOOL: Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is optimistic of returning from injury for the key clash against former team mates and title rivals Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday in a boost for the Premier League leaders. "Hopefully this weekend I'll be back," the league's second top scorer, with 20 goals to team mate Luis Suarez's 30, told children in a question and answer session at a sponsor event for the club. "I'm not too sure if he'll play me or not," he added when asked whether manager Brendan Rodgers was likely to select him. "We'll have to see." Liverpool, chasing their first league title since 1990, have won their last 11 matches and are five points clear of second placed Chelsea with four games remaining. Third-placed Manchester City are a further point adrift with a game in hand. Sturridge missed Liverpool's 3-2 win at Norwich City last weekend due to a muscle strain the England forward picked up in the previous 3-2 win over Manchester City. The 24-year-old has formed a lethal partnership with Suarez since joining Liverpool from Chelsea in January last year and he said he would have no problem celebrating if the Reds won. "I would like to show respect to my former club but if I were to come on and score in the last minute I'm going to be on a mad one, aren't I?," he said. "I don't know if I could control myself if that happened." Chelsea have lost regular goalkeeper Petr Cech for the rest of the season and are also without injured skipper John Terry in defence. Manager Jose Mourinho has suggested the Londoners could field a second string team, with Chelsea more focused on their Champions League home semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. — Reuters |
