Robert Alberts tactical changes produced result

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 10:10 PM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawak head coach Robert Albert said tactical changes he made in the second half earned them three full points when they edged Kelantan 1-0 in the Super League match played at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Baharu last night.

He said they were trying to hold the Red Warriors as long as possible from scoring their opening goal before making tactical changes in the second half.

Albert said the tactic worked well when Bosnian import Muamer Salibasic combined well upfront with Australian striker Ryan Griffths to score the winning goal in the 52nd minute.

"However, Kelantan had more scoring opportunities and both teams had equal winning chances," said the Dutchman.

"That is the first time we won at the Sultan Muhammad IV stadium and overtake Kelantan in the league, and that is very important," he added.

With the victory, Sarawak moved up to fourth position with 22 points from seven wins, behind Pahang, Johor JDT and Selangor. — BERNAMA

Ngap Sayot spirit to spark state sepak takraw teams

Sarawak banking on women's squad to bring home the team gold

KUCHING: The Sarawak sepak takraw teams are looking to the spirit of Ngap Sayot to guide them to glory in Sukma XVII, Perlis from May 24 to June 4.

Head coach Rashidi Solek, who is a strong admirer of the Ngap Sayot battle-cry which is synonymous with the Sarawak's fighting spirit in sports, hopes that it would fire up the fighting spirit of his players.

"All sports teams in Sarawak should adopt the Ngap Sayot battle-cry and fighting spirit. It's our pride and we want that sort of thing in the state sepak takraw teams as well," he told The Borneo Post recently during a training session at the training centre in Petra Jaya.

It was in 1980s when the Ngap Sayot battle-cry was first heard of and during that time Sarawak fielded an all-Sarawakian team under the guidance of Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamad to compete in the local league and Malaysia Cup competition.

Sarawak were transformed from football whipping boys to a force to be reckoned with in Malaysian football, with their players being highly motivated to play just for the sake of being proud to represent their beloved state.

Years after the Awang Mahyan era has ended, the Ngap Sayot battle-cry was still used until today and Rashidi wants that spirit to be ever present in the state sepak takraw teams as well.

Rashidi said Sarawak will be banking on the women's team to win at least one gold medal in Perlis.

He hoped that with retention of three players from the Pahang Sukma, Sarawak will have enough firepower to see off the challenges from the other states.

"We are not looking down on any teams competing during the games but I certainly think
that our women's team have a realistic chance of winning the gold medal in the team event," he said.

The women's team captured the silver medal in the team event at Sukma XV two years ago.

Although Rashidi did not set any target for the men's team as all the players are still new, he does expect them to have a respectable finish in the competition.

"Our men's team are a newly-assembled team and we are preparing them for Sukma 2016. This year is our opportunity to see how well they fare against the other states," commented Rashidi.

He hoped that they will spring a surprise by winning at least a bronze medal.

Rashidi said the players have been training daily since February this year as he does not want any excuses such as the team not being well prepared for Sukma XVII.

SDAAA want night lightings installed at Stadium Tun Zaidi

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 10:17 AM PDT

by Philip Wong, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on April 19, 2014, Saturday

SIBU: The heavily utilised Stadium Tun Zaidi at Old Airport Road is in dire need of night lighting facilities.

Sibu Division Amateur Athletic Association (SDAAA) president Dr Gregory Hii Sui Cheng said the stadium, the only one in Sibu, was getting too crowded with so many events packed and organised at the time.

He said very often, the stadium committee could not entertain the requests of the organiser to fix certain tournaments due to the clash of time and date.

"Should the installation of the night lighting facilities materialised, it would go a long way to help upgrade sports development not only in Sibu Division but the entire central zone," he said during the SDAAA annual general meeting here on Thursday night.

Hii was commenting on the installation of the lighting facilities raised during the recent meeting between the Sibu Sports Council and SDAAA officials.

He said some of the events could be spread into the night should the stadium be installed with the lighting facilities.

Citing football, Hii said the sport would be the greatest beneficiary should the lighting facilities be installed.

"With the night lighting facilities, football can be staged in the evening. This will allow the sport to attract more spectators, hence increasing its popularity."

In other cities, Hii said the stadium was also a popular place to hold night functions, gala gatherings or other events.

"Hopefully, the relevant authorities will look into this matter to upgrade the stadium facilities."

On another matter, Hii said SDAAA also aimed to acquire a portable electronic timer for the stadium usage within this year.

"We have the necessary finance to buy the portable electronic timer which costs about RM20,000. Hopefully, our plan to buy the portable electronic timer will materialise within this year."

Should the plan succeed, Stadium Tun Zaidi will be the first stadium in the state to be installed with the portable electronic timer and time taken by the electronic timer will be recognised by the International Olympic Council.

Meanwhile, SDAAA secretary Ting Siew Nguong, promised to look the issues of the 'missing hurdles' from the stadium.

He was replying to the queries brought forward by one of the secondary schools sports teacher who complained that their school could not longer stage the hurdles events for their sport meet on May 2 as they could not get the hurdles.

Ting explained that the sports ministry had already written off all the old equipment to be replaced by the new equipment and that was why all the old hurdles were taken away.

"Nevertheless, SDAAA will look into this matter to ensure that the hurdles events can continue to be held during the secondary school sports meets."
