KUCHING: Sarawak have broke their Sultan Mohamad IV Stadium jinx on Friday after pulling off a 1-0 win over Kelantan.

It was an impressive Super League result for Sarawak. The Crocs had not won at Kota Bharu since 2002 in any competition.

Long-time fans might recall a match that was played 12 years ago when they mauled Kelantan 4-1 thanks to a brace by Romeo Kambou and a goal each from Gilbert Cassidy Gawing and Ramles Sari.

Friday's win was only by a solitary goal but it was equally impressive.

Over the past three seasons Kelantan have been a formidable force in the Malaysia league.

Ryan Griffith's beautifully crafted chip over Kelantan and national goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat in the 51st minute gave Sarawak the precious three points, thanks to a mistake by the Kelantan defence.

Kelantan might feel they were robbed as they had the lion's share of possessions during the match. But their players just could not manage to translate tries and chances into goals.

Sarawak defended aggressively and pounced on every opportunity to counter attack.

It was also a night when Sarawak had the answer to Khairul Fahmi as custodian Mohd Fadzley Rahim was in top form to deliver a clean sheet. A telling moment happened in the dying minutes when Kelantan forced a free kick after Junior Eldstal committed a foul at the edge of Sarawak's penalty box. But the ball ended in Mohd Fadzley's safe pair of hands.

In a post-match interview Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts commented that it is unfortunate that football is always about winning and three points, not the way the game is played. Nevertheless, he felt that Sarawak were deserving winners.

"We came here to win and we will do whatever it takes to secure it. It was never easy playing against Kelantan but I think the better team won tonight," he said.

With the win in Kota Bharu, Sarawak are now enjoying a three-match winning streak in the Super League after beating ATM 3-2 (April 15) and Terengganu 2-1 (April 11).

The Super League will resume on May 10 with Sarawak taking on Sime Darby at the Stadium Negeri. Alberts added that the break gives the Crocs much needed time to rest and recover.

Jiwa Murni Programme benefits 15,000 residents in Sarawak ...

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 10:09 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: About 15,000 residents in Sarawak have benefited from the Malaysian Armed Forces' (ATM) Jiwa Murni Programme.

Deputy Defence Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said under the programme which began in 2009, six road construction projects had been implemented with four of these already completed.

"The other two projects are still going on and expected to be ready in the middle of this year and early next year respectively," he said in reply to a question from Senator Lihan Jok at the Dewan Negara sitting, here, yesterday.

Abdul Rahim said four of the six projects involved the upgrading of existing logging tracks and the other two, the building of new roads.

He said to date, the Malaysian Armed Forces had built 141.2 km of roads involving the four completed projects and another 56.2 km for the two on-going projects.

Abdul Rahim said besides having a positive impact on the residents' socio-economy, the roads built also reduced their travelling time, as well as boosted tourism and development in the respective areas. — Bernama

Journalist compiles unique side of Sarawak's ethnic minority ...

MIRI: Imagine wearing brass earrings (sumping loyan tembaga) weighing more than a hundred grammes – about as heavy as an IPhone – for the rest of your life to create elongated earlobes.

It is a unique and dying practice by the Orang Ulu community here in the name of beauty, which journalist, Sudan Ajang,37, sometimes portrays with a touch of humour in her book titled "Budaya Etnik di Sarawak" or "Ethnic Culture in Sarawak".

But she is always respectful of the age-old traditions symbolising Sarawak's diverse ethnic cultures.

This is just a sample of the fascinating facts and interesting experiences compiled by the mother of three in the 144-page book which will be in book
stores this week.

"This is not an academic book, it's written in simple language so everyone can understand it. I wanted to document these customs for future generations," she told Bernama here today.

True to her words, the pages are full of fascinating facts about the ethnic minority in Sarawak such as the initiative to preserve one of the oldest
languages in the world – the Meirek and Kelabit that have been in existence for more than 300 years.

It also describes in detail the painstaking preparation for the annual buffalo race in Limbang organised by the Bisaya Association of Sarawak.

In addition, the book also unveils the real reason why so many avid anglers, from neighbouring Brunei to China are willing to risk the crocodile-infested Sepupuk River in Batu Niah just to catch large prawns.

Located 100 km from Miri, the spot is a big draw for anglers who are hooked on the delicacy described as "sweet and juicy".

A Communication and Mass Media graduate from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Sudan, who is a journalist with Utusan Borneo Miri, said most of the articles published in the book are based on her blog.

"I started my own blog www.sudanajang.com/traver in 2010 and had the idea to compile my material. I also had a lot of support from my friends who encouraged me to publish it," she said.

She said it took more than a year to compile the suitable articles and pictures.

Sudan is also an award winning journalist and has won first place at the Azam Petronas Award and Chief Minister Information Communication Technology (ICT) writing competition in 2008 and first place in feature writing in the Sarawak Shell Media award in 2010.

She is also a regular contributor for magazines under Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka such as Dewan Masyarakat, Dewan Budaya and Dewan Ekonomi.

"My next step will be to translate this book to Iban and English if the Bahasa Melayu copy gets a positive response," she said.

She said those interested in the book can check her Facebook account Sudan Traveler.

"At the moment it's sold at RM28 per copy at book stores. It's RM25 if purchased directly from me," she said.

Meanwhile, the Bisaya Association of Sarawak president Antonio Kahti Galis said all efforts to promote Sarawak's ethnic cultures should be encouraged and praised.

"Hopefully the younger generations would better understand their own culture with the availability of such books," he said.-Bernama.

Sarawak planters offer best output growth in Malaysia' – BorneoPost ...

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 10:13 AM PDT

KUCHING: Plantation players in Sarawak are offering the best production output growth prospects for the plantation sector throughout the country.

The research arm of CIMB Investment Bank Bhd (CIMB Research) in a report yesterday said the better-than-expected production results was driven by aggressive new planting of oil palm by timber and plantation players in Sarawak after they successfully acquired the required land and executing the skills in developing and managing the plantation estates.

CIMB Research observed that as a result of new planting, Sarawak palm oil players have the youngest age profile and stronger output growth prospects among the Malaysian-listed plantation players.

The research firm noted that approximately 53 per cent of the total planted oil palm areas in Sarawak were developed over the past eight years.

CIMB Research pointed out that Sarawak has started to scale up the development of oil palm estates from 2006 onwards.

Therefore, given their young age profile, the research firm noted that Sarawak estates' average fresh fruit bunches (FFB) yield achievement of 16.2 tonnes per hectare in 2013 was lower than the country's average FFB yields of 19 tonnes per hectare.

Nonetheless, CIMB Research believed that the FFB yields from the estates of Sarawak planters will rise over the next few years as they reached matured production age.

The research firm is confident that Sarawak planters will be able to achieve double digit FFB output growth of between 12 per cent to 30 per cent this year driven by higher new matured areas and improving FFB yields.

Following a trip to some of the plantation estates in Sarawak, CIMB Research noted that oil palm trees that are planted on peat soils tend to lean over time due to the softer soil conditions and some of the trees which will be culled over time.

As a result, the research firm noted that the planting density for oil palm on peat soils are higher at 160 trees per hectare compared to mineral soils of 136 trees per hectare.

On another note, CIMB Research observed that the cost of developing peat oil palm estates are higher at RM20,000 to RM25,000 per hectare compared to RM15,000 to RM20,000 per hectare for mineral soil due to higher costs incurred at the land preparation stage as well as infrastructure costs in some plantation areas across Sarawak.

The research firm also noted that the historical average cost of production for Sarawak planters achieved ranges from RM1,500 to RM2,200 per tonne of crude palm oil (CPO) price which is higher than their peers in West Malaysia and Sabah due to lower FFB yields.

Wushu federation sends eight for Taiwan championship ...

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 03:55 PM PDT

KUCHING: The Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak aims to bring home at least five gold medals from the First Zhonghwa Cup World Wushu Championship to be held in Taichung City, Taiwan from April 24 to 29.

Team leader Prof Dr Song Swee Hee will head an eight-member contingent of mostly experienced contenders to participate in 16 events.

This was disclosed by Swee Hee at a news conference before receiving the national colours from Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri at the federation's Centre of Excellence at Jalan Resak here on Saturday.

Over 30 countries are expected at the championship.

The Malaysian contingent comprises Dr Yeo Liew Yian, Lily Giam, Lai Lee Sze, Judy Song, Alvin Yeo, Jacqueline Song and Reyes Chang.

Swee Hee said about 60 per cent or over 800 members of the federation are Bumiputeras as the martial art gains popularity among the non-Chinese.

Nancy said the increasing number had taken her by surprise.

"Wushu is normally synonymous to non-Bumiputeras, which is the Chinese. But nowadays, they even have a Wushu centre in Kampung Gita and a lot of Bumiputeras and girls are also involved."

At the function, Nancy was also given an appointment letter to be the honorary president of the federation for the year 2014-2016.

"Thank you for your confidence and trust in me. Officially, I would accept your appointment," she added.
