Posted on March 27, 2014, Thursday KUCHING: The decomposed body of a youth was found floating in the Sarawak River near Kampung Panglima Seman here yesterday. The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Noor Kamarulzaman Abdullah of Kampung Tabuan Hilir. Members of the public spotted his bloated body in the river around 4.15pm and immediately notified the police of the discovery. A police team was dispatched to the scene to recover the body before sending it to the Sarawak General Hospital for post mortem. A source said the body was clad in long pants and a black T-shirt at the time of discovery. Police have classified the case as sudden death pending the outcome of the post mortem. Separately, a teenage girl was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital after she consumed poison at her aunt's house in Bau yesterday. The 14-year-old, who originally came from Simunjan, was found by her aunt groaning in pain and was immediately sent to the hospital, where she is said to be in stable condition. DAP Sarawak respects Karpal Singh's decision to step down as ... Posted: 29 Mar 2014 11:46 AM PDT KUCHING: DAP Sarawak chief Chong Chieng Jen and party members support Karpal Singh's decision to step down as the party's chairman. "DAP party members in Sarawak and the whole nation salute his political dedication and that he was worthy of the chairmanship when he was helming it," said Chong when contacted by thesundaypost yesterday. Chong, who is also DAP vice chairman, was commenting on Karpal's decision yesterday to step down as the party's number one following his recent conviction under the Sedition Act. His deputy, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, now assumes the post of acting chairman. Several online news reports quoted Karpal as citing legalities as reason for him to step aside. This is because under Section 9A(1)(b) of the Societies Act 1966, a person cannot remain an officer bearer of a registered society if he or she had been found guilty of any offence and fined not less than RM2,000 or sentenced to jail for a term not less than one year. Karpal nonetheless remained as Bukit Gelugor MP. On March 11, Karpal was found guilty of sedition for questioning Perak ruler Sultan Azlan Shah on his decision to remove former Perak Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin from his post in February 2009. Karpal was subsequently fined RM4,000 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act. On a related matter, Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, revealed that the party would have their Central Executive Committee meeting on April 27. Among the items up for discussion will be the party chairmanship and other party matters. On the fate of Bukit Assek assemblyman Wong Ho Leng, who had not been active this year, Chong said it would be best if Wong's family gave some feedback of his personal stature. Chong said he would not like to speculate on the fate of the Bukit Asset seat if something happened to Wong, who is Chong's predecessor. |
CM decided on capability, not race - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 31 Mar 2014 12:14 PM PDT SARIKEI: Who to assume the post of chief minister of Sarawak is no longer to be decided based on racial line. Any Sarawakian with leadership qualities qualifies if he/she can spearhead the state's move for prosperity and harmony of its people, said Joseph Allen, publicity chief of the Meradong branch of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS). Allen was responding to State DAP chairman Chong Chien Jen's statement that his party (DAP) would nominate a Dayak for chief minister if the opposition front (PR) were to win the next state election. Equating Chong's statement to dangling 'rotting carrot', Allen said the majority of the Dayaks could see clearly the ulterior motive behind the statement. Allen felt that only a handful of desperate Dayaks were taken in by the statement. "I don't deny that many past Dayak leaders and community at large used to share that dream but after finding the struggle not worthwhile, they decided to put it on the back burner and instead opted to join force with leaders from various ethnic groups to concentrate on developing the state," he said. By agreeing to work with other races under the flagship of Barisan Nasional, the Dayaks had been able to enjoy an equal share of the country's economic cake, which they had to forgo when engrossed in the dream to see a Dayak become the chief minister of Sarawak, he added. "I believe the majority of present day Sarawakians including Dayaks are not particular about the racial background of their leaders as long as he or she was prepared to serve the people with dedication, sincerity and fairness," he reiterated. On Chong's referral to Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Alfred Jabu not being considered to take over the chief ministership from Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud as an insult, Allen said it was Chong's assumption. When the leadership transition was discussed by PBB top leaders, including Jabu himself, the question of insult or disrespect of any party did not arise, Allen said. He said as far as component parties of the state BN were concerned, they respected and accepted the appointment of Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem as the new CM, which PBB top leadership had unanimously agreed to leave to Taib's discretion. Furthermore the first assurance given by Adenan was that he would be a chief minister for all Sarawakians. |
Soppoa committed to MSPO standard for oil palm industry in Sarawak Posted: 27 Mar 2014 10:29 AM PDT KUCHING: Members of the Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (Soppoa) reaffirmed their commitment towards compliance and certification under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) standard for the industry in Sarawak. This was among the points highlighted during its sixth Annual General Meeting held yesterday in Kuching. "The MSPO represents Malaysia's standard for palm oil to the international market which has met with all the criteria and standards of the various ministries and agencies in Malaysia on environmental sustainability and other conservation standards," the association said. "As such, Soppoa members have taken steps to meet the standards required for MSPO qualification which will enable our palm oil to be marketed internationally." While the MSPO is still a voluntary requirement, Soppoa said its members have jointly agreed to all meet the criteria for MSPO qualification to assure the international market that the industry is serious in its commitment to the sustainable practices for the industry here. Soppoa also thanked all federal and state ministries, agencies and organisations that have collaborated with SOPPOA members over the course of the year and look forward to more collaborative efforts in the coming years. Chinese schools in Sarawak unique — CM - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 28 Mar 2014 12:38 PM PDT by Lian Cheng, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on March 29, 2014, Saturday MUKAH: Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem notes that many Chinese primary schools do not cater only for the Chinese students as they have opened their doors to Bumiputera students. "Chong Boon (Primary School) is not a Chinese school. It is a Chinese-Bumiputera school, it is Chinese school by name only," said Adenan while meeting the parents of Chong Boon students here yesterday. He was referring to the fact that 30 per cent of Chong Boon's students are Bumiputeras. He also added that many Chinese schools now have high percentage of Bumiputera students including a Chinese school in Meludam where half of its students are Bumiputeras. "This (Bumiputeras attending Chinese schools) only happens here in Sarawak," he added. Acknowledging the contribution of Chinese schools and that he is the chief minister for all races, Adenan announced RM300,000 from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for the school's upgrading project. And as the school accepted non-Chinese in their schools, Adenan said he would give another RM100,000, making it a total of RM400,000 to be given to Chong Boon. While addressing the parents on Chinese education, Adenan who is state Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman also touched on Sarawak United Peoples' Party and urged both feuding factions in the party to bury the hatchet like what Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) leaders did in their reconciliation. "They have buried their hatchet. I hope SUPP will also do that. If we try, perhaps we can. Only then, the Chinese community will believe in SUPP," said Adenan. Meanwhile, Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said Adenan's visit to Chong Boon proved that he was a chief minister of all races in the state. Wong said out of the total 453 students in Chong Boon, 160 of them were Bumiputeras. Due to the needs for extra-curriculum activities, the school is now embarking on the upgrading project which included the building of a new classroom block and a multipurpose hall. "Student population has increased tremendously in recent years. "The school has to reject many students because too many had opted for Chinese school and there is only one in town," said Wong. He said previously, the federal government through MCA vice president Datuk Wee Ka Siong had chipped in to the upgrading project with half a million ringgit. However, as the total cost is RM2.5 million, the school board of management is still short of required sum for the new buildings. Wong hoped that the Chinese community in Mukah would work closely with the government so that the government could continue to help the community in their school upgrading project. He urged the Chinese community to think big and not to focus only on the Chinese community itself. "Think big. Don't think only for ourselves. Think for Mukah and of how to build up Mukah." |
