NAYPYITAW: National wushu back up squad exponent Phoon Eyin caused a pleasant surprise and created her own history by winning the country's 1,000th gold medal of the SEA Games since 1959.

The gold, wushu's third in the 27th Myanmar SEA Games, was clinched by Phoon from the women's Qiangshu gold medal at the Wunna Theidki A Indoor Stadium after collecting 9.67 points with her energetic performance, although she was not a target for a medal in the Games.

Her performance pushed pre-games favourite Thuy Vi Duong from Vietnam into second place despite polling 9.59 points for her equally splendid performance while Indonesia's Thalia Lovita Sosrodjojo took the bronze with 9.40 points.

In yesterday's overall action, wushu picked up one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

The silver medal was contributed by Ho Mun Hua from the men's Nando after collecting 9.68 points while Diana Bong Siong Lin (women's Nangun) and Ng Say Yoke (men's Daoshu) brought in the bronze medals. A clearly surprised Phoo who made her debut, was not only jubilant but was in a state of shock when her score was displayed and later declared the winner.

"I am totally overwhelmed by the occasion. I really don't have words to describe my happiness. I just went in and did my normal routine like how my coach had instructed," said the lass from Negeri Sembilan.

"Since this is the 1,000th gold medal for the country since 1959, this gold medal, I dedicate it to all Malaysians and especially to my teammates and everyone in the team for helping and supporting me," said the Bukit Jalil Sports School student.

"My next 'gold' is to achieve good results in my SPM exam because to me studies and sports are equally important. I am actually aiming for 3As."

Meanwhile, National wushu coach Yoong Thong Foong said he too was pleasantly surprised by Phoo's outstanding performance.

"Phoo is a very dedicated student and talented," he said. — Bernama

Kudos for Diana, Malaysia’s first SEA Games gold medalist

KUCHING: Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) was all but praises for Diana Bong Siong Lin's achievement in winning Malaysia's first gold medal at the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar.

WFS deputy president James Ting said the result was testament to Sarawak's dedication in producing world class wushu exponents who can bring honours to the country.

"We very are proud of her and on behalf of the federation, I would like to congratulate her. Nobody can take the light from her now as she truly deserves it," he said.

It was sweet revenge for the SMK Sungai Tapang student who failed to bring home the goods two years ago in Indonesia but her outing in Naypyidaw this time round had also ended Malaysia's frantic search for the first gold.

Diana collected 9.70 points to win the gold last Saturday and beating eight other exponents in the women's Nanquan event but her quest for the second one failed in the women's Nandao event held on the following day.

She suffered dehydration due to diarrhoea a few days ago and the exponent only managed a seventh place finishing in the event after garnering 9.23 points.

"No matter what the result are, we know she did and tried her best. It is just that circumstances like these happen during international tournaments," said Ting.

Her national team mates Tai Cheau Xuen and Phoon Eyin on the other hand subsequently added one gold medal each for the country to make it three gold medals for Malaysia so far.

"The focus in the creation of hitmenten is on the type of play of badminton which has undergone various changes over the years, said Abdul Rahman, the creator and founder of hitmenten, who has vast experience in badminton coaching and management since the early 70s.

"With these changes in mind, I create hitmenten and introduce it to produce different skills, including ace service, additional points for an ace service," he told a media briefing here.

He said about 100 participants from various groups, including civil service, corporate sector, educational institutions and MASwings itself had confirmed their participation for the inaugural day-long seminar to be held at the Aquatic Centre of the Youth and Sports Department here.

‘Sports for all programme to include OKU next year’

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:03 AM PST

REMBAU: The Ministry of Youth and Sports will implement a 'Sports For All' programme that includes People with Special Needs (OKU), starting next year.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaludin said the 'Sports For All' programme was to enable the OKU to participate in the programme at the grassroots level, in an effort to identify talent at the early stage.

"Sports for all programmes have always been there but did not include the OKU participation. So, it is about time to give them the opportunity to be in the programme right at the beginning stage rather than at the elite level.

"I will ask the Youth and Sports Department to prepare a working paper to ensure the implementation of the programme," he told reporters after launching the 1Malaysia Bicycle Ride that included four OKU riders taking part in the event using tandem bicycles, here, yesterday.

Khairy said apart from the 1Malaysia Bicycle Ride, numerous world class events have been included in next year's sporting calendar which also happens to be Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

"We have the F1 Grand Prix, Tour de Langkawi, Monsoon Cup, four major golf events, squash, tennis, badminton and a few other notable events. We in the ministry will work closely with the Tourism Ministry to ensure Visit Malaysia Year 2014 is successful," he said.

The two-day 1Malaysia Bicycle Ride which involves a 109km cycling race from Rembau to Rantau is set to enter the Malaysia Book of Records as the Longest Tandem Bicycle ride by a group of vision impaired riders. — Bernama
