Wong's faction meets Taib, branch says charges baseless ...

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:31 AM PST

SIBU: The faction aligned to Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Sibu Branch chairman, in the on-going party dispute has met Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on Sunday night to seek his advice on resolving the crisis.

The faction is led by five state assemblymen Datuk Lee Khim Shim, Datuk Francis Hardin, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Ranum Mina and Johnnical Rayong and four political secretaries to the chief minister.

The four political secretaries to the Chief Minister are Andrew Shilling, Suzanne Lee, Ku Fut Po and Phang Dah Nan. Dr Jerip told The Borneo Post yesterday that they were very happy with the outcome of the talk with the chief minister and his advice on how the party should move forward.

Meanwhile, party's branch in Sibu said the six charges brought against its branch chairman Wong in a show-cause letter issued by the party's disciplinary panel were baseless and unjust.

The branch office in statement released yesterday said Wong was asked to explain why he used his ministerial authority to appoint community leaders and council chairman, namely Frederick Wong as a Pemanca of Sarikei, Chan Phan Chan as the chairman of Sarikei Municipal Council, a Temenggong in Kuching and a Penghulu in Kanowit.

Wong is the state's Minister of Local Government and Community Development which empowers him to appoint community leaders.

The statement added that the panel also accused Wong of encouraging Stephen Wong to contest in the Sarikei Parliamentary seat in the 2008 general election and for recommending Chan Phan Chan as the candidate of the same parliamentary seat in the last general election.

"As we see it, these "charges" brought against our chairman are baseless," the statement said.

The branch said in the first place, Tan Sri Peter Chin's faction had tried to block Wong from taking up his ministerial post and now they wanted to control his ministerial duties.

"From feedback, we see the Chinese community is fed up with their deeds. What the party should do now is to mend relationship with the people, and not do something that turns them off."

The branch warned what the leaders in the Central Committee were doing now could destroy SUPP – the oldest political party in the state .

The statement said after Wong received the disciplinary letter, SUPP Sibu Branch held a meeting last Saturday afternoon.

"Our 15 units resolved to sink or swim with our chairman. We are fully behind him to fight the unjustified accusations against our chairman."

The branch felt what the party central leadership was doing now was wrong because the ROS is probing the alleged party election irregularities.

"At such time, the party is only allowed to carry out daily administration work. Disciplinary matter is outside its scope.

"But, it seems Chin's faction is only interested in bringing leaders down. Numerous party members and branches in the state are now with us. We are all behind Dato Sri Wong."

CMS set to chart another record year in FY13 – BorneoPost Online ...

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:25 AM PST

by Sharon Kong, sharonkong@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 10, 2013, Tuesday

KUCHING: Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) is set to chart another record year of earnings in financial year 2013 (FY13) after a strong set of numbers for the first nine months of 2013 (9M13).

According to analyst Ng Sem Guan of RHB Research Institute Sdn Bhd (RHB Research), although CMS' management is confident of charting another record year of earnings, it believed this would greatly depend on the timing of its profit recognition from the sale of two land plots to Sentoria Group Bhd (Sentoria).

"We had factored in profit of one of the two land plots in the fourth quarter (4Q)," the analyst said.

CMS had indicated in a post-result analyst briefing that it is likely to conclude one of its land sales to Sentoria before end of the year, leading to a RM20 million gain on disposal to be recognised in the 4QFY13 result, according to analyst Toh Woo Kim of Alliance Research Sdn Bhd.

In addition to that, the joint venture (JV) with Malaysian Phosphate Additives Sdn Bhd (MPA) for the construction of a RM850 million integrated phosphate plant in Samalaju Industrial Park will be concluded soon, having just announced to Bursa Malaysia last Friday that it is now in its final stages of negotiation.

Per the original memorandum of understanding (MoU), the equity stake in the project will be split into 40:60 between CMS and MPA. However, CMS only expects the plant to be operational by 2016.

"Output from the phosphate plant could be used in the production of fertilisers and animal feed, both downstream industries which CMS might be interested to invest into," Toh opined.

So far, Ng had only projected marginal profit from CMS' newly-upgraded clinker plant in FY13.

The analyst opined that this plant is likely to reach optimum efficiency, cost savings and production volume next year, thus driving CMS' 2014 earnings.

In addition, he expects that another land sale to Sentoria is likely to be recognised in the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14).

In terms of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), the analyst pointed out that CMS is well on track to propel the state's economy, thereby directly or indirectly boosting the growth of all of its business units.

"Our immediate focus is on CMS' 20 per cent stake in OM Sarawak Sdn Bhd's (OM Sarawak) smelting project, which offers potentially rich returns, given its access to 20 years of cheap power," Ng said.

Overall, CMS' valuations remain undemanding despite having gained 103.8 per cent since the research house initiated coverage on March 20. However, its current market cap only reflects the full valuation of its cement division, based on its peers' average price earnings (P/Es). Note that its other divisions account for half of its earnings.

"Thus, our sum of parts-based (SOP-based) fair value of RM7.55 per share reflects 1.2-fold price to book value (P/BV) and a 10.3-fold P/E on FY14F estimates, after stripping out net cash.

"With another set of record earnings almost in the bag, we maintain our 'buy' call on CMS," Ng said.

As for Alliance Research, Toh took into account that management reaffirmed its intention to raise dividend payout from FY14 onwards after OM Sarawak's ferroalloy plant starts production in July 2014, and has thus assumed a higher 40-50 per cent dividend payout in FY14 and FY15 (from 30 per cent currently).

This translates to a dividend per share (DPS) forecast of 22-32sen per share and decent net dividend yield of 3.5-5.1 per cent in FY14 to FY15.

With no changes made to its earnings forecasts, the research house maintained its 'strong buy' call and SOP-based target price of RM7.57 per share for CMS, which implies an undemanding valuation of 10.8-fold FY14 P/E (ex- net cash) and 1.3-fold FY14 price to book (P/B).

State marks Civil Service Day at BCCK today - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:10 AM PST

by Lim How Pim, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 10, 2013, Tuesday

KUCHING: Some 5,000 government servants are expected at the Civil Service Day celebration held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Organised for the 13th year running, the event is an occasion for civil servants to converge and reflect on what the state government has achieved and embark on strategies to move Sarawak forward.

It marks a significant day for civil personnel as those who have recorded excellent service will be conferred awards while departments and agencies, which performed well, are also to be appreciated.

There are four categories carrying many awards with cash between RM2,000 and RM15,000.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will launch the Sarawak Government Kiosk, which is among the highlights at the celebration.

The kiosk represents a one-stop centre for the state government to extend its services and disseminate information to a wider spectrum of society.

It is to be placed at major shopping malls in the city for the general public to, among others, learn more about government services and pay bills.

Among the invited guests are State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani and State Federal Secretary Datuk Md Yahaya Basimin.

Both Morshidi and Yahaya were present at a rehearsal at BCCK here yesterday, with the session going quite well.

The celebration will kick off with a welcoming dance staged by 100 state and federal government officers.

After observing the national and state anthem, Morshidi will be called on stage to lead all civil servants to take an oath.

He will then hand over the scroll (written oath) to Taib during a simple ceremony. A video clip on the development and future of Sarawak will be shown after the speeches of Yahaya and Morshidi.

Taib is to deliver his keynote address before presenting excellence awards to deserving civil servants.

Educating public not to waste any food served – BorneoPost Online ...

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:09 AM PST

KUCHING: The Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Division Chinese Associations will be launching a campaign soon to educate the public not to waste any food served.

Temenggong Lu Kim Yong, who heads the federation, told The Borneo Post that their counterpart in the peninsula launched the campaign some time last month, but it has not been done in Sarawak or Sabah.

"We (Sarawak) will launch it very soon."

He explained that this initiative was a good one to get the public to treasure food.

"Food is difficult to produce, so we should not waste it. In addition, there are many people in the world suffering because of famine."

Meanwhile, at the launch of Fabulous Food 1Malaysia 2013 at Batu Kawah MJC New Township car park here on Sunday, Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh applauded the federation for wanting to launch the campaign to prevent food waste.

He said the move would eventually instil good habits among the people.

"I was also informed that the campaign will run concurrently with the serving gears and punctuality campaign.

"They will work together with food outlet operators and local councils' enforcement units to ensure serving spoons and forks/chopsticks are provided when serving the food," said Wong.

His text-of-speech was read by Lu.

Wong said the campaign was excellent to promote greater awareness on the importance of hygienic eating habits as most people eat outside nowadays.

"It is of paramount importance to make sure the food served is clean and safe to eat.

"As for the punctuality aspect, it is always a good moral value for all of us to adhere to time."

Wong said Malaysians should be thankful for having the luxury to choose from an eclectic spread of food daily.

He added that Malaysians were so blessed to the extent that they often face the dilemma of choosing from the wide variety available for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea breaks and supper.

"There are local, western, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Chinese, Malay and Indian cuisine for us to choose from. Even then, many of us are still complaining.

"If we look at the hunger-struck Philippines and many other places hit by famine, we should be thankful for having the luxury to be so choosy."

On Fabulous Food 1Malaysia 2013, he congratulated the organising committee for holding the event for five consecutive years.

"Your hard work certainly fulfils the gastronomical delight of our people, and I believe Fabulous Food 1Malaysia will succeed as a tourist attraction in Malaysia, especially Sarawak."

Also present were organising chairman Lee Pui Siong, Gabungan Persatuan Penjaja-Penjaja dan Peniaga-Peniaga Kecil Malaysia president Datuk Lee Tiong Chwee, Federation of Sarawak Hawker Association president Kapitan Lim Sin Kee and life honorary president Datuk Tiong Su Kuok, and Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang.

Rep: Extend RM500 aid for flood victims to Sabah, Sarawak ...

Posted: 08 Dec 2013 10:43 AM PST

MIRI: The RM500 financial assistance to be given out to each family affected by floods which was announced by the Prime Minister recently should also be extended to flood victims in Sabah and Sarawak.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said the flood victims, particularly in rural areas in the state, also deserve to be given the same attention by the government.

"We hope the RM500 financial assistance announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would also be distributed to the people in rural areas in the state who are hit by flood," he said when met here yesterday.

Dennis said even though the natural disaster is very common to the people, particularly in his constituency, it did not mean that they did not need any help from the government.

"Flood destroys not only their houses, but also most importantly their crops which they depend on to survive," he added.

As of yesterday, he said he was told that five areas in his constituency were currently hit by flood – Long Wat, Long Panai, Batu Belah, Long Bemang and Kuala Tutoh.

However, he assured that the Welfare Department and Marudi District Office were always on standby to reach areas in his constituency hit by flood.

"We advise all villagers particularly in low-lying areas to be aware at all times and be prepared to be evacuated if the flood worsens," Dennis said.

He also reminded government agencies involved in the distribution of aid to speed up their delivery so that victims would not need to wait too long for assistance to arrive.

Nevertheless, Dennis thanked the government for its effort in helping the people and lessening their burden.

"It proves that the government is sensitive to the victims and the financial assistance given would at least ease the burden of those affected," he added.
