Appointment of kapitans no bearing with rift in SUPP Posted: 11 Dec 2013 10:39 AM PST by Churchill Edward, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 12, 2013, Thursday KUCHING: A Chinese community leader Temenggong Lu Kim Yong brushed aside talks that the appointment of new Chinese Kapitans for Kuching Division recently has widened the rift between the two feuding factions in Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP). He also described such accusation as "nonsense and baseless". "Before I was appointed temenggong, there were many vacancies for Chinese community leaders left unnoticed for a very long time. Several community leaders whose term has expired were left unattended to. These resulted in very poor services given to the community and thus grudges started to creep in," Lu stated through a press statement received here yesterday. He added that the reshuffling of Chinese community leadership recently with young and qualified candidates willing to serve the people regardless of political background had won back some of the people's trust. They were now more willing to work together with the community leaders. Unfortunately, he claimed, there was a small group of people with self interest and personal agenda making use of the appointment of new community leaders an issue and continued to create discord between the two conflicting parties in SUPP. "It is these irresponsible people who cause the loss of confidence among the people towards SUPP and its leadership, and turn their back on SUPP. "At this very challenging time, I sincerely hope that the accusation would stop. The conflicting parties must look at the root cause of the problem, admit their fault and shortcomings, strive harder to give their best services to the people in order to win back their trust and support. "Only a strong team working cohesively can service the community well and achieve their goal. A wise leader should be able to take the responsibility, walk the talk, calm the rift and place others ahead of oneself for the benefit of all," said Lu. SUPP is awaiting a reply from Registrar of Societies (ROS) over the party's explanation to ROS' show cause letter following complaints by several members that several branch election in the run up to SUPP's last triennial delegates conference were tainted by irregularities. The issue caused a split between the party's central leadership headed by Tan Sri Peter Chin and another group led by SUPP Sibu chief Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh. In the numbers' game, Chin only has one elected representative in his camp – deputy president Datuk Seri Richard Riot (Serian MP) while Wong has six assemblymen namely Wong himself (Bawang Assan), Datuk Francis Harden Hollis (Simanggang), Datuk Lee Kim Shin (Senadin), Dr Jerip Susil (Bengoh), Dr Johnical Rayong (Engkilili) and Ranum Mina (Opar). On top of that all three SUPP appointed political secretaries to the Chief Minister are siding Wong. To compound SUPP's political problem, talks are also rife that a new party is being set up to replace SUPP within the BN should the party is deregistered. Both factions have denied that they have got anything to do with the new party To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Time to test drive an electric car — MMM Ceo Posted: 11 Dec 2013 10:38 AM PST KUCHING: The Mitsubishi e-Heroes programme will see the Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle (i-MiEV) available for the public to test drive at Petrosains Dino Trek 2, Sarawak Museum from Dec 10 to Jan 7, 2014. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) launched the programme at Sarawak Museum here yesterday. "This programme offers electric car fun rides to kids to promote awareness on ways they can play a part to create an eco-friendlier future," said MMM chief executive officer (CEO) Tetsuya Oda before the launch. He said e-Heroes encompassed all electric, energy, environment and earth aspects. "We started the educational programme back in Kuala Lumpur in August 2012. Since then it has travelled to Terengganu, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu," he revealed. Oda said since its launch, the programme had benefitted close to 70,000 young Malaysians. MMM yesterday brought in their most advanced creations for the educational programme in the form of the i-MiEV. It is a fully electric, zero emission vehicle which is environment-friendly thus makes for cleaner, safer and more efficient driving. Oda revealed that MMM had begun the sales of i-MiEV to the Malaysian public. He said the 100 per cent electric car is surprisingly powerful to give a smooth quiet ride. "i-MiEV is definitely redefining the world's drive," he commented. He said at MMM, they believe that caring for the environment is everyone's responsibility. "We believe our technology and passion for driving will lead the way to a new future for motoring. We believe by making driving cleaner and safer, our children will get to enjoy earth's many wonders, and that's what drives our Drive@ Earth corporate philosophy," he said. Earlier State Museum director Ipoi Datan acknowledged the role of MMM in preserving the planet by inculcating in children at a younger age respect for the Earth and the environment. "Any environment-friendly programme, especially of educational value, is accepted by city folks and I know it's a great responsibility for MMM," said Ipoi. He added that Sarawak Museum is the right venue to pave the way for young people to see and learn about the environment and the electric motorcar. Ipoi hoped future generations have something to see and ensure our earth is safe from environmental catastrophe. The educational programme is run in partnership with Petrosains Sdn Bhd. Also present at the launch were Petrosains Progamme Department director Kamuruddin Kassim and Jimisar principal dealer Mariana Ismail. Drain to be improved to stop flash floods, says Lee Posted: 11 Dec 2013 10:36 AM PST Posted on December 12, 2013, Thursday MIRI: Flash floods, a common occurrence in Kampung Muhibbah in Kuala Baram, will be a thing of the past when the upgrading and improvement of its drainage system is completed. Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin who inspected the village here yesterday said "Public Works Department will deepen and widen the existing drain. The current drain was found to be shallow and unable to cater for high volume of water, especially during monsoon season." He said this had caused the water to overflow to the low lying areas causing flash floods. << Previous Entry - Next Entry >> To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Suspected glue sniffer’s body fished out of river – more photos Posted: 11 Dec 2013 10:35 AM PST KUCHING: The body of a suspected glue sniffer was fished out of Sarawak River near the Kuching Division Mosque yesterday afternoon. The body of the unidentified victim was spotted around 2.45pm by workers at a flood mitigation work site adjacent to the mosque, who promptly reported their find to the police. Police personnel from the Central and Gita stations were present at the scene to investigate before retrieving the body, which was clad in jeans and a T-shirt, and transporting it to Sarawak General Hospital for a post-mortem. Judging from the condition of the body, it is believed the victim — thought to be a youth — could have been dead for 24 to 36 hours. A small black plastic bag was found tied around the victim's right palm, leading many gathered at the scene to speculate that he was possibly a glue sniffer who might have fallen into the river and drowned while he was high. Police have classified the case as sudden death pending the outcome of the post-mortem.
