COPENHAGEN, (Denmark): Despite not having recovered fully from a groin injury, world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei still packed too much power to dispose Lee Dong Kuen of South Korea 21-11, 21-12 in a first round BWF World Championships match at the Ballerup Super Arena, here.

Speaking to reporters after his match, Chong Wei said he was happy with his play although he has yet to recover fully from the injury he had suffered at the Indonesian Open Super Series about two months ago.

"I tried to give my best although I have not been playing competitive badminton for almost two months…Once I'm on court, I try to forget the injury," he said.

The Penangite, chasing for the elusive World Championship title, showed no signs of his current injury to start the match on an aggressive note, giving the South Korean little room to recover.

Chong Wei who faces lanky German Dieter Domke in the second round said he would not take his opponent lightly although he had beaten the German twice before.

"What is important is to focus on every match and not underestimate opponents. We must remain physically and mentally strong," he said.

The World Championships in Copenhagen is seen as Chong Wei's best chance to win the elusive title due to the absence of defending champion Lin Dan of China, Chong Wei's arch-rival and nemesis.

However, the path to the final would not be easy with the presence of World number two Chen Long who will certainly be a serious threat.

Domke meanwhile, dashed the hopes of Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kashyap Parupalli from India 26-24, 13-21, 21-18 in a three-set thriller to set a date with Chong Wei.

Apart from Chong Wei, his namesake Chong Wei Feng will see action in the first round against England's Rajiv Ouseph. — BERNAMA

A new chapter for Sarawak muaythai begins

Posted: 25 Aug 2014 11:57 AM PDT

by Matthew Umpang, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on August 26, 2014, Tuesday

KUCHING: The reformed Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMK) is promising a new era for the development of the sport in the state.

The previous association was deregistered in November last year.

The new PMS president Jumaat Ibrahim said he is relieved that the body is now revived after being heart-broken last year.

"I guess it was big news to all muaythai enthusiasts in the state to hear that PMS being de-registered last year. As enthusiasts of the muaythai sport in Sarawak, we do not want to see this happening to our state association," he added.

He promised that the association will now do everything they can to continue and improve the standard of muaythai in Sarawak.

He also wanted to put on record his appreciation to Sarawak State Comissioner (SSC) Lamat Nyalau for helping them with the re-registration.

In the interim period, all duties were temporary handled by the Kuching Muaythai Association (PMK).

Lamat explained that the old PMS was deregistered as it had too many irregularities in its operations and failed to comply with the rules and regulation set by the SSC Office.

"During the time, they did not submit any annual report, did not hold any meeting despite being reminded via letter over and over again. I hence had no choice but deregister the association," he said.

Meanwhile, the TYT Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak Cup Muaythai Tournament, held last Friday at the Stadium Perpaduan, was the 'new' association's first assignment.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib were present to officiate at the prize-giving ceremony.

Also present were City North Comission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and Assistant Minister of Industrial Estate Development Datuk Peter Nansian.

A simple ceremony was also held to mark the 're-birth' of PMS with Taib invited to put his signature on a platform prepared by the organisers.

SMK Three Rivers Mukah top taekwondo tourney

Posted: 25 Aug 2014 09:25 AM PDT

SIBU: SMK Three Rivers Mukah emerged as overall champion in the 5th Sarawak Inter-school MGTF Taekwondo Championship held at SMK Kampung Nangka to take home the YB Abu Seman Jahwie Challenge Trophy on Sunday.

They took the title from defending champion and arch rival Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) which had won the previous three championships.

The tournament and 4th Borneo Invitation attracted 250 exponents representing 14 teams from Kuching, Bintulu, Mukah and Sibu.

The two-day event on Aug 23-24 was organised by Sarawak Global Taekwondo Association (SGTA).

In the Borneo Invitation, Main Gym Sibu dethroned Sabah, champion for two consecutive years, to win the SGTA Cup.

In the Under-12 category, Main Gym Junior clinched the top spot ahead of SJK (C) Chong Boon Mukah and SK St Patrick Mukah.

In the Under-15 category, SMK Three Rivers Mukah grabbed top placing with Main Gym and SMK Bintulu second and third respectively.

SMK Three Rivers Mukah also proved their mettle in the Under-17 category pushing aside SMK Rosli Dhoby in second spot and MRSM Mukah, third.

SGTA president Abang Ahmad Zaini Abang Fauzan was on cloud nine after his Main Gym team beat arch rival Sabah.

"Over the last three years, we have been strengthening our team and exposed them to various competitions to sharpen their skills, including mental conditioning.

"They had undergone three months intensive training to prepare for this high level tournament. Winning the SGTA Cup was the fruit of our labour," he said.

He said the main objective of the tournament was to promote taekwondo to the masses and select athletes to represent Sarawak in national-level tournaments.

The teams competed in four events, namely individual pattern, group pattern, individual sparring and group sparring.

SGTA patron Abu Seman, who is political secretary to Chief Minister and Jemoreng assemblyman, graced the opening ceremony while Datuk Seri Prof Dr Sabree Salleh officiated at the closing.

United start ‘not good enough’ for Van Gaal

Posted: 25 Aug 2014 09:23 AM PDT

SUNDERLAND, United Kingdom: Louis van Gaal has demanded an immediate improvement from Manchester United after admitting their start to the season has not been good enough.

They avoided matching their worst opening sequence to a Premier League campaign since 1992 by earning a point with an unconvincing display in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

But after the first-day defeat at home to Swansea, the new Old Trafford manager was left with much to ponder, his assertion that his side need a miracle to win the title this season looking increasingly accurate.

He revealed confidence was low after seeing Juan Mata's goal at the Stadium of Light on Sunday cancelled out by Sunderland's Jack Rodwell to leave the former champions already five points behind the early pace-setters in their attempts to improve on a disappointing seventh-place finish in May.

"So much is down to confidence," van Gaal said. "In pre-season, our confidence was much better than it is now. "We're working hard to improve and if we win the next match then that confidence will start to come back."

The Dutchman added: "The players are disappointed because we thought we would win today (Sunday), and yet we have one point and it's not good enough for Manchester United.

"I can't say it was a better performance than last week because we didn't create as many chances as against Swansea. Our passing needs to be better because we gave the ball away a lot when I didn't expect us to."

Van Gaal couldn't lift spirits with a positive update on United's pursuit of Real Madrid's Angel di Maria, as he remained cautious over the prospects of signing the 60 million ( 99 million, 75 million euro)-rated Argentinian midfielder.

"I can't say about transfers at the moment," he explained. "When a transfer has been finished then we can say something but now you have to wait and see.

"The club has to announce it. When we are thinking it's the right time to announce it then we'll come to you and say we've bought this player or that player, but at the moment we can't say anything."

Showing his sense of humour hasn't been diminished by his testing introduction to life at Old Trafford, van Gaal added: "People have asked me if I like di Maria. Well, I like Lionel Messi also. There are a lot of players in the world I like, but they can't always come here."

United defender Chris Smalling limped off before half-time with a groin injury to add to the lengthy Old Trafford injury list before the club return to action against MK Dons in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Van Gaal — who refused to condemn Ashley Young for a second-half dive that earned the England midfielder a caution — said: "We had seven players out injured before this game, so now with Chris, that's eight.

"It's too early to say if he might be out for some time. I'm not a doctor. It's an unusual situation to have four midfield players out injured. That would impact on any club.

"That's why I played Adnan Januzaj in central midfield when I brought him on."

Sunderland performed well enough to have claimed a first home league win over United for 17 years.

But coach Gus Poyet was far from disappointed after his side claimed a second point of the campaign with a battling display. — AFP

Lamat conducts course in Kapit

Posted: 25 Aug 2014 09:22 AM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawak State Sports Comissioner (SSC) Lamat Nyalau was in Kapit to conduct a course last weekend.

He told The Borneo Post yesterday that various sports associations in the division need to have the proper know-how in running a sports association.

"There are many enthusiastic sportsmen and sportswomen from this division. Therefore we need more sports associations here to cater for their needs," he added.

He also reminded sports associations that forming a sports association is not the last step.

Associations, he stressed, should be managed and run professionally as well.

Lamat said he made the trip to Kapit to brief interested parties on the Sports Development Act 1997.

The course was attended by representatives of the various sports associations in Kapit.
