Victims of Kpg Muhibbah fire in dire need of new homes

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 04:16 PM PDT

MIRI: Twenty-two villagers of Kampung Muhibbah in Kuala Baram near here, whose houses were razed by fire last week, received assistance from PAS Miri.

The early morning incident destroyed six wooden houses built 20 years ago, leaving the residents who are workers at sawmills and shipping companies in Kuala Baram, homeless.

A team from the party, led by Sarawak PAS Youth chief Mohd Arif, paid a visit to the victims and handed over food items, clothing and other daily essentials to them.

For the records, it was the second time PAS had extended assistance to the families.

According to one of the Kampung Muhibbah folk, they were prohibited against rebuilding their houses at the original site.

"Building a new home is difficult for us, especially those with large families, as house prices are too expensive nowadays and our income is just enough to cover daily expenses. We urge the authorities to help us rebuild our homes at the same site as we have long been living there," the victim said.

Meanwhile, PAS said it had been actively involved in various community activities such as changing the roof as well as providing household needs under its 'For You Sarawak' project.

"Many less fortunate folk have benefited from this project. Our programme with the people will continue for the welfare of Sarawakians.

"This said, PAS welcomes contributions of any kind – money, energy and ideas – from the public to make this work," a statement from the party said.
