Agriculture lacking participation Posted: 16 Aug 2014 09:51 AM PDT TUARAN: The State Government will continue to strengthen collaboration with its federal counterpart towards commercializing the agricultural sector in Sabah, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman. He said cooperation will be heightened in critical aspects, especially in the provision of allocation for high impact projects as well as identifying new methods to increase agricultural productivity. "We will also continue to identify more programmes that are beneficial to the agriculture community, in addition to the various assistance that we have already provided," he said to reporters after officiating at Road to MAHA 2014 here yesterday. Musa said a lot still needed to be done to fully tap the huge potential in commercial agriculture in Sabah, which is still highly lacking in participation from local communities. In his speech earlier, Musa said the government had identified the sector as one of the 12 economic generators for the country and coincidentally agriculture was also among the main economy earners for Sabah, together with the tourism and manufacturing sectors. In line with the concept agriculture is business, various programmes and schemes have been provided to help farmers, breeders and fishermen to become successful agro-entrepreneurs. "Sabah has a vast and fertile land available for agriculture. Opportunities are abundant in various agricultural chains and efforts are being made by the government to explore these opportunities, but we need participation from the people. The people themselves need to grab these opportunities," he said. During the event, Musa also presented cheques to agro-entrepreneurs from Tuaran, who were among some 947 entrepreneurs across the State that benefited from the grants totalling RM6.743 million allocated through Tekun (Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usaha Niaga) for Sabah this year. Another RM1.465 million incentive from Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang (LPP) was also given for 5,193 padi planters from the district, involving 6,593 hectares of padi fields. Meanwhile, Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohd Arif Ab Rahman said a total of RM34 million has been allocated under LPP for padi planting programmes in Sabah this year. The event was part of a series of prelude to MAHA to be held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) in Kuala Lumpur from November 20 – 30. Sabah was the seventh stop in the Road to MAHA after Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah and Melaka. Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Mohd Noor cum Tuaran Umno chief in his welcoming remarks said the hosting of the event was hoped to increase awareness among the local communities on the potential in the agriculture sector. Tuaran is home to the only agricultural research centre in the State and among the districts identified for various key agricultural projects, such as aquaculture and padi planting. |
P’pang MCA to rebuild fire victims’ houses Posted: 16 Aug 2014 09:51 AM PDT KOTA KINABALU: MCA Penampang has pledged to assist the 18 families in Kampung Peringatan to rebuild their houses. The 18 families had lost their houses when a fire broke out in the village early this week. According to MCA Penampang deputy chief Francis Goh, the division had appointed an architect to help design the houses and would also assist the victims to apply with Syarikat Perumahan Nasional Berhad (SPNB) for assisrance to build the houses. SPNB has the Rumah Mesra Rakyat scheme which allocates RM50,000 to each applicant who has his or her own land to build a house, he said. Goh added that they will try their best to fulfil the pledge within three months, but stressed that the approval of the allocation for the construction of the house depends on SPNB. "The appointed architect will be designing a simple layout for a house with three rooms, a kitchen and others," he said, Goh, who is also SHAREDA president, added that MCA Penampang would be discussing with UMNO Penampang chief Datuk John Ambrose to see what else they could do to assist the fire victims. He said that John would assist in getting some additional allocation from Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to be used towards building the houses. "I will also request John to send a bulldozer to the site of the fire so that clearing works can be expedited. This will make it easier to divide the lots for the contructuion of the new houses," Goh said. Meanwhile, MCA Penampang chief Datuk Paul Kong, who was also present at Kapung Peringatan yesterday, handed RM500 each together with other donations such as rice and food items to the heads of the families involved. |
Sabah Umno unique, different from peninsula – Salleh Posted: 16 Aug 2014 09:50 AM PDT KOTA BELUD: Sabah Umno can only be managed by leaders, with the Sabah people's aspirations at heart, because it has its own uniqueness, said Sabah Umno liaison deputy chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Salleh Tun Said Keruak. He said Sabah Umno has a different history, and the environment as well as issues in this state were not the same as in the peninsula. However, he said, with the support of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as party president who always understands the aspirations and desires of the people of Sabah, Sabah Umno is believed to be able to survive and remains relevant all the time. "Sabah Umno cannot be equated with Umno in other states. Here, not all members are Muslims as in peninsula Malaysia. "We have Umno members who go to church (Christians), members with no religion (pagans), who celebrate Christmas and 'Aramaiti', but all of them are united and respectful. "They can even eat and sit together at social gatherings," Salleh said when speaking at the closing ceremony of Kota Belud Umno delegates meeting, Hari Raya celebration of the elected people's representatives (wakil rakyat) and Kota Belud Umno, here yesterday. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman officiated at the ceremony. Salleh, who is also State Legislative Assembly Speaker, said Umno turned into a new platform for the natives or Bumiputera in Sabah, and had brought many changes in the socio-political and development dimensions. "Most importantly, Sabah Umno leaders at all levels always practise consensus, not fragmented, not a culture of back-stabbing politics or playing a double game, and instead prioritize the organization and its struggle based on loyalty, " he said. Salleh, who is also Kota Belud Umno division chief, likened the political struggles to that of a train with only a head in front. "Kota Belud upholds the principle of 'having only one leader' (berketua satu) since time immemorial until now, and this is the key to its strength," he said. |
Special Johor property offer at Sutera Posted: 16 Aug 2014 09:50 AM PDT KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans are presented with a golden opportunity to own property in the fastest growing township in the heart of Iskandar Malaysia, Johor Bahru with lower down payment and RM50,000 rebate. A representative from the Marketing Division of Tanah Sutera Development Sdn Bhd, Josephine Chai said the offer is valid for Sabahans who book their purchase from any projects under the company during the two-day exhibition at Meeting Room 1, the Magellan Sutera Sabah, which started yesterday, from 10am to 8pm. "Tanah Sutera Development Sdn Bhd, a property company backed by a consortium of Malaysian and Singaporean companies including Keppel Land and Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT), owns a land bank covering an area well over 1,200 acres located in the western corridor of the city of Johor Bahru. "The land bank of the company is divided into two areas, namely Taman Sutera and Taman Sutera Utama. Both areas are strategically located in between flagship A and B of the Iskandar Development. Building homes in Johor, our mission is to consistently deliver confidence, convenience, hope and happiness to every customer that step through our doors," she said. During an exclusive interview with Chai on the first day of the event yesterday, she explained that Tanah Sutera's earthwork began in 1993 and until today, has become a renowned and vibrant township in the heart of Iskandar. "Convenience being something that most people desire is something that Tanah Sutera can offer. Projects located at Sutera Utama are just a 5-minute drive away from the well-recognized Sutera Mall, widespread of eateries, entertainments and the education hub. They are also accessible to major highways. Drivers only need 15 minutes to reach Johor Bahru city centre, Legoland, Newscastle University of Medicine, Marlborough College, Tuas Checkpoint and Senai Airport," she added. At Tanah Sutera, rental vacancies are low which leads to less competition in finding tenants. Ninety five per cent of the community are owner-occupied and many of them have been living there for years. This ensures that the neighbourhood is well-maintained and thus, increases the value of its properties. Furthermore, there are established communities known as the Home Owners Association (HOA) designated for each precinct of Taman Sutera and Sutera Utama. Activities like Chinese New Year celebrations, gotong-royong, Christmas celebrations and more are organised by the HOA for their precincts to foster closer relationship within the community and to look out for one another. "These activities helps the community to be alert at guarding the safety for everyone living there. "Investors looking to invest in properties should look at what the neighbourhood has to offer. A property located in a strategic area with vibrant township, low amount of rental vacancies, according to one of the Investopedia's writer, Beattie (2014), and an established community that helps one another in keeping the surrounding safer and secured. "Investors can find tertiary students and employees from other states coming to work in Johor Bahru and maybe Singapore. They are most likely the targeted audiences looking to rent a room or a house. All these factors can be found in Tanah Sutera's properties," Chai further explained. Another important point that Chai explained during the interview was the target of the developer to create a zero waste and green living environment, beginning with its own staff and residents, ultimately expanding to the community and society at large. "In Kota Kinabalu, our main focus is The Seed, an exclusive secured development that comes complete with resort facilities offering a vibrant lifestyle living in a tropical setting. The Seed offers 1,250 units with four type of properties namely Garden Villa, Duplex Suite, Condominium and Penthouse. "Previously, about four years ago pricing for Garden Villa was started at RM470,000, Duplex Suite RM396,000 while Condominium and Penthouse was from RM459,000 to RM1.3 million. "Today, the price for Garden Villa starts from RM1.2 million, Duplex Suite from RM790,000, while Condominium and Penthouse is from RM943,000 to RM1.9 million," she said. Tanah Sutera prides itself in nurturing a community and at the same time, injects a sense of responsibility over the welfare of the environment. "We strive to contribute not just to building homes, but also rebuilding and maintaining the nature of our surroundings. These practices are instilled through the 5Rs principle and also through the applications of Effective Microorganisms (EM)," she added. The developer is currently conducting its East Malaysia roadshow. After Kota Kinabalu, another exhibition will be held from August 22 – 24 from 10am to 9pm at Booth PS 23, Sarbex Total Living 2014, Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching, Sarawak. |
