Losses justify call to put out fires first Posted: 25 Aug 2014 12:46 PM PDT by Peter Boon, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on August 26, 2014, Tuesday SIBU: The RM21 million losses from 12 longhouse fires is justification enough for the call on longhouse residents to give priority to learning to put out fires. "Yes, if the fire (from our own judgement) can be extinguished and controlled from spreading… that becomes the priority." State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Nor Hisham Mohammad said yesterday when responding to a recent call by Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang for longhouse people to get trained in firefighting. Salang said they should give priority to putting out fires together rather than rushing to salvage personal belongings. "This is good knowledge stressed by an important person," remarked Nor Hisham, who pointed out that fire safety needed to be given top priority by village security and development committee (JKKK). "The trained personnel of JKKK can play an important role to coordinate the occupants during a fire outbreak," he added. Sarawak Region Marine Police commander ACP Kalai Chelvan Nadarajan said his men, acting on a public tip-off, conducted an operation code-named `Ops Pensura' to check the activity at the camp around 8.45am on that day. "When my men inspected the timber, they suspected they were illegally extracted as the workers failed to produce valid document from the authority concerned to prove otherwise," he said. They had handed over the case to the Forest Department for further investigation for an offence under the State Forestry Ordinance, Kalai said.
