Gunshots fired at Sarawak Minister's residence – BorneoPost Online ... Posted: 13 Aug 2014 10:45 PM PDT SIBU: Shots were fired at the residence of state Minister of Local Government and Community Development Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh which is situated at Ipoh Road here between 8.15pm and 8.30pm Wednesday night. His wife Datin Sri Leong Poh Ling said the shot hit a window on the first floor of a bedroom facing the road. Although all family members, except for Wong were at home, nobody was hurt. Leong said the incident was only discovered in the morning when her son saw pieces of broken window panes below the curtain on the floor. Speaking to reporters in Miri, Thursday, she said she infact heard a very loud explosive noise between 8.15pm and 8.30pm. "I looked out the window but saw nothing. So I thought somebody's car tyre or laptop had exploded," said Leong, a retired school teacher in her 60′s. She said upon discovering broken window panes and a hole that had pierced through another window pane, the police were called in to check. Wong's son Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yee said he was not sure who was the intended victim or the person who fired the shot. Andrew Wong, the deputy chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council said he believed it was related to his work, which involves solving problems of hawkers in the town. "But whatever it is, it is just not right. We will leave it to the police to investigate," he said adding that the timing was however, very suspicious since his father would be launching the United People's Party (UPP), Sarawak's latest political party, in Kuching on Saturday. The senior Wong is to lead the party after a bitter quarrel with leaders of his previous party, the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), quit SUPP in May this year and joined another new political party called Teras (Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak) but left it for UPP in July. Meanwhile, Sibu deputy police chief, Supt Martin Koo when met at the scene confirmed shots were fired at the house using a shotgun. "We found a spent slug and nine pellets in various places of the house compound, just below the bedroom. We are still investigating." he added. — BERNAMA |
Crocs fend off Turtles' fightback - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 14 Aug 2014 11:57 AM PDT KUCHING: Sarawak heaved a sigh of relief when the referee blew the final whistle at stadium Negeri last night as they hanged on to a a nail-biting 3-2 lead to beat Terengganu. The opening Malaysia Cup Group B looked like it was going to be a stroll in the park for the Crocs as despite missing two of their import players they cruised to a three nil lead in the first half. The jubilant home crowd expected their team to continue the rout in the second half but instead were left praying for the final whistle as a resurgent Terengganu whittled the the three goal cushion to just one by the 71st minute. The teams and fans observed a minute of silence for the MH370 and MH17 victims before the kick-off. A large section of the fans threw paper airplanes in a poignant gesture to honour the victims. Ryan Griffiths and Joseph Kalang spearheaded Sarawak's attack as expected while defender Ronny Harun was suspended for the match. The Sarawak's back four consisted of Gabor Gyepes and Hairol Mokhtar in the centre while Ramesh Lai Ban Huat and Dzulazlan Ibrahim were on left and right back duty respectively. The Crocs threatened almost immediately with Joseph Kalang's shot in the 6th minute going just wide. Sarawak took the lead a minute later when they were awarded a penalty after Rashid Aya was brought down in the visitors' penalty box in the seventh minute. Griffiths coolly slotted in the resulting spot kick. Terengganu's Marjo Karlovic wasted a clear opportunity in the 22nd minute when his shot went wide. Griffiths breached the Turtles defence again in the 29th minute, slotting in a long cross from Rashid. The Australian nearly bagged a hat trick moments later but his shot hit the side netting. S. Chanturu added another one for Sarawak after he received a short pass in the Terengganu penalty box from Griffiths. After the breather, Junior Eldstal nearly made it 4-0 but he failed to connect a pass from Joseph. Terengganu pulled one back after Karlovic headed in a corner in the 57th minute. Turtles narrowed the gap after skipper Zairo Anuar Zailani scored from a penalty in the 71st minute after substitute Ismail Faruqi was fouled in the box. After their second goal the visitors threw everything into the attack searching for the equaliser but the Crocs' defence stood strong to hold on to a precious slender win. |
Sarawak working on its 11MP proposals - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 10 Aug 2014 03:29 PM PDT KUCHING: Sarawak wants more infrastructure development and public facilities to be built in the state under the 11th Malaysian Plan (11MP). For that reason, a meeting was called last month involving state and federal agencies and financial institutions to discuss planning and coordination to realise the objectives. Industrial Development Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said it was crucial to have proper planning ahead of the roll-out of the 11MP. "We should give priority to what we deem priority needs for Sarawak. "Because of that, coordination is key and we want all agencies to understand the planning that we have at the state level. Through planning, we will be able to fit in the programmes we want to implement. "In the 11th Malaysian Plan, we want to see more development in the state in terms of infrastructure development and public facilities," he said at a Ramah Tamah Aidilftri dinner organised by the Ministry of Industrial Development's social and recreation club here on Saturday. He said his ministry looked forward to the setting up of more industrial estates, not just in urban centres, to facilitate the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state. The state government also wanted better facilities for industrial estates in Samalaju and Kuching, where there are heavy industries, and electronic and information technology-related industries respectively, he added. "We will be focusing efforts on developing the small and medium industries. That is why cooperation between the agencies must be closer so that we can extend assistance to our SMEs in terms of financial assistance and so on." He pointed out that skills training would also be given priority attention to fill up vacancies created by the industries. "If we do not focus on skills training, we will be totally dependent on foreign labour." Awang Tengah also called on agencies under his ministry to continue their close cooperation with their counterparts at the federal level, citing the ministry's tasks were now getting more significant to ensure that all policies and programmes could be successfully implemented. He said implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) had been smooth, with a few companies already operating there. "Last year, a company (Comtec Solar) from China chose to make Kuching its production centre for solar wafer." Also present at the dinner were the ministry's Assistant Minister Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie and Datuk Julaihi Narawi, permanent secretary Datu Liaw Soon Eng and Kuching Port Authority chairman Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah. At the gathering, Awang Tengah presented excellent service awards and souvenirs to retiring staff. He also distributed incentives to club members' children who excelled in public examinations. |
