Wet paddy programme benefits 200 farmers

SIBURAN: The iM Sarawak 'Wet Paddy Cultivation Programme' has benefitted at least 200 Bidayuh farmers in Kampung Skuduk Chupak here.

Ceria Agriculture Sdn Bhd (Ceria Group) managing director Thomas Hii Tiong Kong said the new high quality MR219 and MR263 seeds had proven to increase the harvest yield and helped improved the quality of life of the local farmers.

"Farmers can now harvest twice a year under the programme. The paddy fields in Kampung Skuduk Chupak is the only farming site in Sarawak that carries double harvesting due to the readily available water for irrigation," Hii explained during a briefing at Skuduk Chupak Multipurpose hall yesterday before going down to the fields for the first harvest.

He added that prior to the distribution of MR219 and MR263 seeds, the farmers here planted a mix selection of rice, namely white, red, and black varieties.

However, this proved to be an unsuccessful venture as the harvest became contaminated, causing the rice either unfit to be marketed, or, if there was a buyer, it would fetch a very low price.

"Last year, during a dialogue with the farmers here, we witnessed desperate farmers. Some of them expressed their intention of abandoning their land to search for work elsewhere.

"However, the solution was very simple – all they really needed was to restart their fields
with pure seeds and get a response from the market," Hii explained.

He further explained that the collaboration with iM Sarawak and Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M) proved to be a very viable effort as Ceria Group was not in a position to fund the seeds.

"There are 170 hectares of land, and an average of 20kg per hectare would amount to three tonnes of seeds, with a market value of approximately RM10,000.

"Therefore, the collaboration with iM Sarawak was much-needed in order to help these farmers," Hii said.

Meanwhile, 1Malaysia Sarawak Advisory Council (1MSAC) member Datuk Billy Abit Joo said the success of the pioneer project in Kampung Skuduk Chupak could be replicated to other areas, adding that the project was still in the suggestion period and that he himself was still collecting information.

"The reason I joined the visit to the paddy fields here today (yesterday) was to see the method of planting. This is because we in YR1M are currently making a proposal to carry out the same project in several Penan settlements such as the one in Lusong Laku, where the land there is very suitable for planting wet paddy," said the former Hulu Rajang MP.

Abit further explained that the main agenda was to teach the right method of planting wet paddy to the Penans, as they were used to growing the hill variety.

"We are suggesting that an estimated total of 200 hectares to be developed for this reason, and maybe we would start with a few acres first," Abit quipped, adding that 600 villagers would benefit from the project should it take off.

Meanwhile Mas Gading MP Anthony Nogeh Gumbek, who is also a member of the council, also shared his sentiments on bringing the project to his area, saying that he was currently identifying suitable areas for planting wet paddy, one of which could be Serikin.
