KUCHING: Chaos broke out at the State Stadium around 11pm when fans invaded the pitch following Sarawak's 1-1 draw with Perak. Some sections of unhappy spectators threw firecrackers while those on the field took to vandalising advertisement boards.

It was believed that fans were directing their anger at Perak following an incident at Ipoh when Sarawak played Perak and Sarawak fans were attacked and abused by the home supporters.

Fans gathered outside the stadium main gate to block the Perak team bus from leaving.

Police Federal Reserve Unit used teargas to disperse the crowd. Two police cars were overturned with one being set alight. It is believed three spectators have been apprehended.

At last night's match, defender Hairol Mokhtar put the home side 1 up in the 60th minute. Perak cancelled the lead in the 75th minute through Marco Tulio Lopes.

The goal which many believed was scored from an offside postition could have fueled frustration to an already tense atmosphere as Sarawak faced elimination from the Malaysia Cup.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei into third world final, Li seals return trip

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 09:44 AM PDT

COPENHAGEN: Malaysian world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei secured a third straight men's singles finals appearance at the badminton world championships on Saturday while women's top seed Li Xuerui of China also advanced to the title match.

Top-ranked Lee, twice a runner-up at the tournament, brushed aside young Danish hopeful Viktor Axelsen 21-9, 21-7 in front of a partisan Copenhagen crowd to move within touching distance of a first major title.

Despite his advancing years Lee, who will turn 32 in October, demonstrated his enduring class with a sublime blend of blistering overheads and resolute defence to reel off 12 of the final 13 points in the first game and never looked back.

The Malaysian star, also a two-time Olympic singles silver medallist, then pocketed 21 of 25 points after trailing 3-0 early in the second set to complete a comprehensive victory over the 14th seed.

"So far things have got better each match," said Lee, who will face the winner of the match between Chinese second seed Chen Long and Indonesia's fifth-ranked Tommy Sugiarto in Sunday's final.

"I can go back to resting now and prepare for tomorrow.

"The country will be watching and there will be more pressure on my shoulders. I will try not to think about the pressure and give a big present to my country," added Lee, who is hoping to give people back home further cause for celebration on Merdeka Day, which marks Malaysia's 1957 independence from British colonial rule.

Meanwhile Li ended the run of Japanese dynamo and 16th seed Minatsi Mitani to seal a return to the women's singles final.

World number one Li, runner-up a year ago on home soil in Guangzhou, dominated from the beginning with Mitani, sporting a heavily strapped right leg, unable to offer much resistance as Li powered to a 21-8, 21-14 victory.  — AFP

He urged practitioners not to misuse the art of self-defence as it can hurt people.

"Be philisophical in the art of self defence and use it to keep fit," he advised.

"This is good sport for the young and for everybody who wants to keep fit," he added.

Bring it on, says muaythai fighter

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 09:41 AM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawakian kick-boxer and muaythai fighter Trevor Salang has vowed to bring more glory to his beloved state.

He said he drew his inspiration from Sarawakians and he will do anything to make those who believe in him happy.

"I fight for Sarawak and all my victories are dedicated to Sarawak and the people of the state. I am also proud of my Dayak heritage as I firmly believe that it somewhat played a role the way I fight," revealed the Miri native.

He is fully committed to a boxer's life and he has no regrets since he made that decision a long time ago.

"Like most boxers in the state, we can't afford to do any other day jobs as this will consume most of our time. A dedicated boxer in my opinion must devote most of his or her time in training," he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Trevor's latest achievement was winning the international invitational category at the TYT Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak Cup Muaythai Tournament held at the Stadium Perpaduan last week.

He defeated Egi Rozten from Indonesia.

"My opponent is from Jakarta and he has an impressive fight record. Before the match, I was wondering if I was well-prepared for the fight but I guess I was the hungrier of the two boxers on the ring that night," he commented.

He laments the lack of a sparring partner in his hometown Miri.

So before the recent tournament, he made a trip to Phuket, Thailand to train with a few friends there.

Hence he would like to thank his sponsors and supporters  for their faith in him.
