SIBU: Defending champion Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU) easily blew apart SHOAW All Boys from Kuching 44-12 in their group match of the Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) tournament held at SMK Sacred Heart rugby field on Friday.

SDRU, powered by Fijian duo Iowane and Eba, were simply too strong and powerful for the SHOAW team of mostly students.

Iowane scored the first try in the 10th min before teammate Adrian Lau entered the scoresheet with another try and a conversion 5 min later.

The halftime score was 27-7.

In the second half, Iowane made two more tries while Mohd Kijan contributed another.

In the other match, both Kuching Division Football Rugby Union (KDFRU) and Miri Rugby Union Club started cautiously.

KDFRU's Fijian Koroi Labogaumatalai Anise scored another try in the 14th minute which was cooly converted by Mohd Safuan Salehuddin. Another three points from a penalty put them ahead at 15-0.

MDRU, also marshalled by a Fijian, fought back and dominated stretches of the game.

Their hardwork finally paid off in the 42th min when Awangku Shahil Arshad muscled his way through the tight defence for a try.

Clinton Patrick stepped up to convert. Half time score was 15-7. In the second half, poor finishing failed the Miri team.

Instead, Kuching staged a counter attack in the 9th minute when Heath Bradley Lahalon broke through for a touchdown at the sideline.

Miri reduced the deficit from Dickson Balang's 17th min try and Patrick's conversion.

Kuching eventually ran out as 28-14 victors.

Lamat calls for young sports administrators

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:49 PM PDT

KUCHING: Sarawak State Sports Comissioner Lamat Nyalau would like to see greater creativity from sports associations in attracting youngsters.

These associations, he hoped, would constantly try new ideas to scout and recruit talents.

"This is definitely one of the steps which will help produce more young athletes for Sarawak in the future. Time has changed, there is a need to find more ways," he said.

Lamat also stressed the need to attract more youngsters to be involved in running sports associations and organisations.

"The earlier the better as the they have ample time to train themselves but it all depends on the state sports association on how they want to attract youngsters. I think it would be great to see more youngsters holding positions in the various sports associations in Sarawak," he added.

It is also the duty of the various sports association to educate the public on the significance of sports and the value of a society with a rich sporting culture.

Lamat was speaking to The Borneo Post after he conducted a divisional level course in Bintulu on Saturday (Aug 16).

Pavit wins in Terengganu as Thais secure top three spots

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:48 PM PDT

KUCHING: Thailand filled the top three spots in the PGM Tour's RM200,000 Terengganu Championship at Resorts World Kijal yesterday.

Leading the way was Pavit Tangkamolprasert, who fired a final round five-under 66 to come from behind and win by a single stroke from compatriot Pijit Petchkasem (71).

He finished on 13-under 273.

In third place was Rattanon Wannasrichan, who closed with a 68 and was three shots off the leader on 274, while Malaysia's Shaaban Hussin settled for fourth place on 276.

A stroke back was Sweden's Malcolm Kokocinski (69), while Australian Nabil Abdul (65), Japan's Tenka Terada (66) and Malaysian Abel Tam (72) were joint sixth on six-under 278.

American Casey O'Toole (66), Englishman Grant Jackson (67), Myanmar veteran Zaw Moe (70) were tied for ninth on 279.

After shooting a round that yielded six birdies, which were countered by a bogey, and see his countryman Pijit surrender the lead at the end of the tournament with an even-par 71, Pavit said he was "very, very happy".

"It is always nice to win and while this is my first victory this season, following the ADT event I won in Indonesia on last season's schedule, I am very, very happy.

"I am also happy that my putting peaked in the last round," added the 25-year-old from Bangkok. "I think the turning point came at the 7th hole where I sunk a 30-foot putt and from there my confidence grew on the greens.

"My driving off the tee and my short-game were good throughout the week, so for my putter to get hot on the last day – especially the back nine – it really made the difference and I am really pleased about it," said Pavit.

Pijit, who looked a good bet going into the last round with a two-stroke advantage, had four birdies on the day, but gave those shots back with a double-bogey and two bogeys.

It dented his chances of a first PGM Tour title, but he should have learnt a few good lessons this week, not in the least that he has the game to challenge the best on the Tour.

The Terengganu Championship is co-sanctioned with the Asian Development Tour and carries world ranking points.

PGM Tour's next stop is the I&P Group Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong, Selangor, starting on Thursday.
